Abstract: Single-mode lasing action is obtained from a modified octagonal quasiperiodic photonic crystal single-defect microcavity which supports a well-confined whispering gallery mode with ultralow threshold and high-quality factor. Side-mode reduction is achieved by inserting a central air-hole in the cavity region. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
