The wrist joint, although extremely mobile in all three plans of
space, is neverthless able to support several times the
bodyweight without damage. Its archchitecture, base on eight
bones and a special ligamentous bonding,is very complex but
guarantees stability under all circumstances. In the past, the
researches on the biomechanics of the wrist were mainly based on
the two dimensionalanalysis of positional changes of carpal
bones. Three dimensional measurementof carpal bones during wrist
motion were not elucidated. The purpose of this study is to
develop a new system to elucidate this problem. In this study,
we proposed a method to measure the movement between lunate and
capitate. This method combines the information of both static
computed tomography and uhe dynamic computed tomography, then
integrate the image processing and coordinate translational
technique. This method measure the dynamic distance between
lunate and capitate automatically by implement on IRIS in C
language. By using this method, we describe the changes in
relative position in mass center of the lunat e and capitate
during dynamic motion of the carpal bones. The changes in
relative position of mass center clearly represent the motion of
carpal bones durion wrist movement. Experiment result how that
the method can measure the dynamic distance of carpal bones
correctly. The method has a great potential on the s tudy of the
wrist biomechanics.
