Consider the unstable linear multivariable systems. The model reduction algorithm based on balancing and truncation technique for unstable systems will be given. If the unstable system can be ''balanced,'' then the balancing and truncation algorithm gives a reduced order model which (i) has the same number (McMillan degree) of unstable poles as the original model, and (ii) has an error bound which is similar to the case where the system is stable.

We propose a model reduction method for multi-input multi-output linear time-invariant systems based on frequency weighting and balanced realization. We show that with both input-weighting and output-weighting, the method yields stable reduced order model, provided that the full order model is stable. Examples show the effectiveness of frequency weighting. Finally, our results are compared with those obtained by other frequency weighted model reduction methods.
