Item type:Item, Deterministic optical control of room temperature multiferroicity in BiFeO3 thin films(2019-06-01) ;Liou, Yi-De ;Chiu, Yu-You ;Hart, Ryan Thomas ;Kuo, Chang-YangHuang, Yen-LinControlling ferroic orders (ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity) by optical methods is a significant challenge due to the large mismatch in energy scales between the order parameter coupling strengths and the incident photons. Here, we demonstrate an approach to manipulate multiple ferroic orders in an epitaxial mixed-phase BiFeO3 thin film at ambient temperature via laser illumination. Phase-field simulations indicate that a light-driven flexoelectric effect allows the targeted formation of ordered domains. We also achieved precise sequential laser writing and erasure of different domain patterns, which demonstrates a deterministic optical control of multiferroicity at room temperature. As ferroic orders directly influence susceptibility and conductivity in complex materials, our results not only shed light on the optical control of multiple functionalities, but also suggest possible developments for optoelectronics and related applications.Item type:Item, Ferroelectric Control of the Conduction at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Heterointerface(2013-06-25) ;Vu Thanh Tra ;Chen, Jhih-Wei ;Huang, Po-Cheng ;Huang, Bo-ChaoCao, YeItem type:Item, Field enhancement of electronic conductance at ferroelectric domain walls(2017-11-06) ;Vasudevan, Rama K. ;Cao, Ye ;Laanait, Nouamane ;Ievlev, AntonLi, LinglongFerroelectric domain walls have continued to attract widespread attention due to both the novelty of the phenomena observed and the ability to reliably pattern them in nanoscale dimensions. However, the conductivity mechanisms remain in debate, particularly around nominally uncharged walls. Here, we posit a conduction mechanism relying on field-modification effect from polarization re-orientation and the structure of the reverse-domain nucleus. Through conductive atomic force microscopy measurements on an ultra-thin (001) BiFeO3 thin film, in combination with phase-field simulations, we show that the field-induced twisted domain nucleus formed at domain walls results in local-field enhancement around the region of the atomic force microscope tip. In conjunction with slight barrier lowering, these two effects are sufficient to explain the observed emission current distribution. These results suggest that different electronic properties at domain walls are not necessary to observe localized enhancement in domain wall currents.Item type:Item, Probing Local Ionic Dynamics in Functional Oxides at the Nanoscale(2013-08-01) ;Strelcov, Evgheni ;Kim, Yunseok ;Jesse, Stephen ;Cao, YeIvanov, Ilia N.A scanning probe microscopy technique for probing local ionic dynamics in electrochemically active materials based on the first-order reversal curve current-voltage (FORC-IV) method is presented. FORC-IV imaging mode is applied to a Ca-substituted bismuth ferrite (Ca-BFO) system to separate the electronic and ionic phenomena in this material and visualize the spatial variability of these behaviors. The variable-temperature measurements further demonstrate the interplay between the thermally and electric-field-driven resistance changes in Ca-BFO. The FORC-IV is shown to be a simple, powerful, and flexible method for studying electrochemical activity of materials at the nanoscale and, in conjunction with the electrochemical strain microscopy, it can be used for differentiating ferroelectric and ionic behaviors.
