Item type:Item, 33 similar to 50GHz CMOS Receiver with Wideband RF, IF and LO Chain(2017-01-01) ;Huang, Ching-Ying ;Wu, Kung-Long ;Hu, Robert ;Chang, Chi-Yang電子工程學系及電子研究所This manuscript describes the Q-band 90nmCMOS receiver design where the 33 similar to 50GHz RF-LNA, actively-biased double-balanced mixer, 10GHz IF amplifier, wideband frequency tripler and power amplifier in the LO chain are all integrated into one single chip. With overall power consumption of 170mW under 1.2V bias, the measured conversion gain is 15dB, noise figure close to 8dB, inputreferred P1dB around -30dBm, and the LO-IF port isolation is more than 60dB. Therefore, it can be easily driven by an external 11 similar to 16GHz signal source and used in applications such as next-generation broadband mobile communications where several specific Q-band frequency points have been considered. However, contrary to most receiver designs where the optimization is carried out over a relatively narrow bandwidth, here the main challenge lies in how to effectively extend the RF, IF, and LO bandwidth simultaneously without rendering performance deterioration. By possessing such broadband RF, IF, and LO characteristics, this Q-band circuit is also eligible for use in radio-astronomical, atmospheric, and other scientific instrumentations.Item type:Item, A 1.5 to 37 GHz ultra-broadband MMIC Mouw's star mixer(2005) ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;Liao, Ching-Ku ;Niu, Dow-Chih ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA MMIC ultra-broadband star mixer using Mouw's hybrid junction is presented in this paper. The MMIC chip uses 0.15 mu m HEMT process. The chip is measured in three mounting environments, namely, absorber backed, 15 mil Al(2)O(3) substrate plus absorber, and conductor backed and all of them show ultra-broadband performances. The measured results show that the bandwidth is from 1.5 to 37 GHz except a resonant dip near. 23 GHz occurs in conductor backed case.. The IF 3 dB bandwidth is from DC to 2.5 GHz. The chip can be used as either up- or down-converter. Because the spiral layout of the Mouw's hybrid junction shrinks the area significantly, no off chip baluns are required. The chip size is 2 mm by 2 mm.Item type:Item, A 10-110 GHz fundamental/harmonic rat-race mixer(2007) ;Chi, Chun-Hsiang ;Wu, Chung-Hung ;Wang, Wei-Ting ;Lai, Chi-HauNiu, Dow-ChihThis paper describes a broadband 10-110GHz mm-wave rat-race ring diode mixer. The mixer can be used as a fundamental mixer as well as a harmonic mixer. The finite-ground-width CPW on a 15mil alumina substrate is used to implement the circuit. The mixer is designed to allow DC bias that a local power as low as 0dBm could properly pump the mixer. Two commercial available M/A-Com MA4E2037 GaAs beam-leaded Schottky diodes are used. The measured conversion loss is typically 9dB from 10 to 100GRz in the fundamental mixing mode and 15dB from 20 to 110GRz in the harmonic mixing mode.Item type:Item, A 34-42GHz Single-Side-Band Transmitter with Switchable VCO/PLL in 90nm-CMOS Process(2017-01-01) ;Huang, Ching-Ying ;Wu, Kun-Long ;Hu, Robert ;Chang, Chi-Yang電子工程學系及電子研究所This manuscript describes a 34-42GHz single-sideband 90nm-CMOS transmitter where PLL has been integrated into the LO chain and, with I/Q input and two-stage up-conversion, a 30dB image-rejection ratio is achieved within the intended bandwidth. This transmitter's wideband tuning range is made possible by the use of additional capacitor on the VCO, and the phase noise of the resulting RF output is in the range of -70 to -90dBc/Hz at 1MHz, and all below 100dBc/Hz at 10MHz. The circuit's IF-to-RF conversion gain is 30dB, with saturated output power around 5dBm, and the total power consumption is 260mW. Through the control of the power amplifier's drain bias, a 50dB power level difference can be obtained, thus allows signal modulation and further combination with the receiver. This 1100x650um(2) transmitter can be used as a prototypical circuit to explore next-generation mobile communication and civilian radar array systems.Item type:Item, A Balanced Digital Phase Shifter by a Novel Switching-Mode Topology(2013-06-01) ;Lin, Yun-Wei ;Chou, Yi-Chieh ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA balanced digital phase shifter by a novel switching-mode topology is proposed. A 3-bit balanced digital phase shifter is given as an example, the working bandwidth of which is from 2.3 to 2.7 GHz. The proposed 3-bit balanced phase shifter comprises two balanced loaded-line phase shifters (90 degrees and 45 degrees) and six twist-line broadband 180 degrees phase shifters. The size of this hybrid is about 13% of the conventional one. Experimental results show that this hybrid ring coupler centered at 2 GHz has a 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 97.5% from 0.98 to 2.93 GHz with 0.5 dB amplitude imbalance and 30 phase imbalance for both out-of-phase and in-phase operation. Its isolation is better than 30 dB from 0.5 to 4 GHz.Item type:Item, A High Slow-Wave Factor Microstrip Structure With Simple Design Formulas and Its Application to Microwave Circuit Design(2012-11-01) ;Chang, Wei-Shin ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;傳播研究所Institute of Communication StudiesThis paper proposes a new microstrip slow-wave structure. The unit cell comprises a Schiffman section of meander line and a shunt open-circuited stub. No via-holes and ground-plane patterns are required. Simple design formulas can be used to obtain line parameters, such as the characteristic impedance and phase velocity. According to the analysis, the characteristic impedance and slow-wave factor of the proposed slow-wave line can be independently controlled by merely two layout parameters. The proposed uniplanar structure only requires a single-layer substrate and is simply constructed using the conventional printed circuit board manufacturing process. A branch-line and a rat-race coupler were designed and fabricated using the proposed structure to demonstrate its feasibility. Their sizes are only 8.49% and 4.87% of the conventional ones, respectively. This novel slow-wave structure should find wide applications in compact microwave circuits.Item type:Item, A Novel Filter Bank Using Serial-Switched Structure(2016-01-01) ;Tsai, Hsiu-Min ;Chou, Po-Jung ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityA novel filter bank using serial-switched structure for the commercial bands of Band40, WIFI, and Band38 application is proposed. The surrogate model can be represented by a coupling matrix in a doublet configuration, and a simple method based on the even-odd mode bisection is given to extract the coupling matrix. From the extracted parameters, one can decide how to design a filter with prescribed quasi-elliptic responses and how to adjust varactors to reconfigure the response. Using the proposed methods, the second-order filter can be configured to have a finite transmission zero on either the lower side or the upper side of the passband in a prescribed location even when the center frequency of the filter is tuned. Both simulated and measured results of an example are presented.Item type:Item, A software configurable coupler with programmable coupling coefficient(2007) ;Wang, Shih-Ming ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;Lin, Jenshan ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA novel microstrip parallel coupler with tunable coupling coefficient is proposed. By approximating the lossy response with short-circuit admittance parameters in partial fractional expansion form, the proposed method can evaluate the unloaded quality factor of resonators and extract the transversal coupling matrix simultaneously. The methodology of the vector fitting can identify the poles and residues of the short-circuit admittance parameters even when the poles are on the complex plane. And the extracted transversal coupling matrix can further transform into the prescribed form corresponding to the physical layout. The proposed method can be used in the tuning process of filter designs where the extraction of a coupling matrix is essential. To verify the method, a cross-coupled quadruplet filter is used as an example.Item type:Item, A W-band Quadrature Hybrid Coupled Substrate Integrated Waveguide Diplexer(2015-01-01) ;Cheng, Yu-Liang ;Chen, Hung-Wei ;Huang, Peng-Da ;Chang, Chi-Yang電機工程學系A W-band quadrature hybrid coupled substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) diplexer is proposed in this paper. Both theoretical analysis and circuit simulation have been carried out; as a demonstration, parallel and interleaf active power splitters are designed using 0.1 mu m GaAs pseudo-morphic heterostructure field effect transistors (GaAs pHEMT) process and measured on-wafer. The results clearly indicate the superiority of the interleaf topology. A 40 GHz interleaf active power splitter in 90 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) is then presented where the magnitude and phase imbalance between the two output ports are 0.15 dB and 2.6 degrees at 20 GHz, and 0.16 dB and 14 degrees at 40 GHz. The output-port isolation is better than 30 dB across the whole frequency range.Item type:Item, Analysis of wide-IF-band 65 nm-CMOS mixer for 77-110 GHz radio-astronomical receiver design(2019-05-01) ;Huang, Ching-Ying ;Wu, Kun-Long ;Hu, Robert ;Chang, Chi-Yang電子工程學系及電子研究所This manuscript presents the design of a W-band receiver in which an radio frequency-low noise amplifier (RF-LNA), a wideband mixer, intermediate frequency (IF) amplification, a local oscillator frequency (LO) tripler and a driving amplifier are all integrated into one single chip of 1050 x 820 mu m(2). To effectively extend the mixer's IF bandwidth while retaining its conversion gain, impacts of the mixing transistor's drain bias and output loading impedance are explored using a dual-modulation conversion-matrix method, which allows both the LO-induced transconductance modulation and channel-conductance modulation to be considered simultaneously. It is shown that, by merging the input capacitance of the IF amplifier into a high-impedance artificial transmission line, an actively biased mixer can have constant conversion gain over broad bandwidth. A 77-110 GHz 65 nm-complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) receiver with 33 GHz IF bandwidth is then designed and measured. Its conversion gain and noise figure are 10 and 20 dB, respectively, and the input-referred P1 dB is -15 dBm; the overall power consumption is 330 mW under 1.3 V drain bias.Item type:Item, Analytical Design of Microstrip Short-Circuit Terminated Stepped-Impedance Resonator Dual-Band Filters(2011-07-01) ;Chang, Wei-Shin ;Chang, Chi-Yang ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis paper proposes an analytical method to design a dual-band filter using the short-circuit terminated half-wavelength stepped-impedance resonator (SIR). The SIR has an advantage to easily control the first and second resonances by adjusting its structural parameters. In the proposed method, the structural parameters of the SIR are obtained analytically according to the two passband center frequencies and bandwidths of the filter. As a result, the achievable specifications of the dual-band filter can be rapidly determined. The coupling between adjacent SIRs is realized by a short-circuited stub, which is characterized as a K-inverter network. The dual-frequency transformer incorporated with the tapped-line input/output structure is used for the external coupling. Applying the analytical equations in the design process, a dual-band filter can be easily and quickly realized. More importantly, compared to the published dual-band filters, the proposed method is easier to design, especially for a relatively high-order dual-band filter. Two fourth-order and one sixth-order dual-band filters are designed and fabricated to demonstrate the proposed method.Item type:Item, Broadband Planar Magic-T with Marchand Type Power Divider and Balun(2014) ;Chou, Po-Jung ;Lin, Pei-Chieh ;Lin, Yun-Wei ;Lu, Jhe-ChingChang, Chi-YangA new broadband high-order planar magic-T is proposed in this paper. The magic-T is formed by Marchand type power divider and balun. Exact synthesis method based on S-domain highpass prototype using Richard\'s theorem tits the magic-T with the user-defined specifications. By discussing the characteristic impedance of the common element shared by the balun and divider, the magic-T can be designed to match different output impedance. A high-order magic-T with wide bandwidth about 100% and reflection coefficient of -15dB is designed as an example where a combination of microstrip lines, slotlines, double-sided parallel-strip line (DSPSL) and coplanar striplines is applied. The simulation and measurement results are matched well.
