Item type:Item, A design consideration for durability of high-performance concrete(2001-08-01) ;Chang, PK ;Peng, YN ;Hwang, CL ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityEnvironmental factors, especially the climate, have significant influence on concrete structure. This paper aims to investigate the harmful effects of maritime climate on the durability of concrete structures built in coastal areas. Singly reinforced beam specimens of traditional design and those of densified mixture design algorithm (DMDA) were employed to study the potential problems of concrete structure. Results indicate that cracks on the concrete structure, if go unnoticed, may cause failures. Thus, it is important to know the methodology of achieving high strength and durable concrete in order to avoid formation of cracks in the structural member. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. From the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), it was found that the pores and hydration products at the ITZ, within 100 mum between the paste and aggregate, permuted each other during the early hydration stage, and then appeared as a large lump or strip. They gradually became irregular and small lumps for the further curing age. At the curing age of 56 days, the pores almost concentrated within an area of 0-15 mum from the aggregate edge. The hydration products were much denser with the increase in its distance from the aggregate edge. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The properties of the fresh and hardened concrete are measured. It is found that adding all superplasticizers (SP) in watts in one dose can ensure that workability can be maintained. The tested results identified a most efficient and economical method in making HPC. especially for lower binder content, which requires less mixing time and less amount of SP in producing the resulting material with higher flowability and better compressive strength than the other methods.
