Item type:Item, Carrier gas effects on the SiGe quantum dots formation(2008-07-30) ;Lee, C. -H. ;Yu, C. -Y. ;Lin, C. M. ;Liu, C. W.Lin, H.SiGe quantum dots (QDs) grown by ultra-high vacuum chemical vapor deposition using H(2) and He carrier gases are investigated and compared. SiGe QDs using He carrier gas have smaller dot size with a better uniformity in terms of dot height and dot base as compared to the H(2) carrier gas. There is a higher Ge composition and less compressive strain in the SiGe QDs grown in He than in H(2) as measured by Raman spectroscopy. The Ge content is higher for He growth than H(2) growth due to hydrogen induced Si segregation and the lower interdiffusivity caused by the more strain relaxation in the He-grown SiGe dots. The photoluminescence also confirms more compressive strain for H(2) growth than He growth. Hydrogen passivation and Ge-H cluster formation play an important role in the QDs growth. H. ;Lin, Y. -C. ;Hwang, E. ;Huang, H. -T.Chang, W. -H.Collagen VI, one of the extracellular matrix proteins, has been implicated in regulating cell proliferation and reducing apoptosis in several different systems. However, the role of collagen VI in the central nervous system remains unclear. In this manuscript, we demonstrated that upon ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, mouse primary hippocampal neurons specifically up-regulate the expression of Col6a1, Col6a2, and Col6a3 mRNA and secreted collagen VI protein. Augmentation of collagen VI mRNA and protein after UV irradiation may have a neuroprotective role as suggested by the fact that extracellular supplying soluble collagen VI protein, but not other collagen proteins, reduced UV induced DNA damage, mitochondria dysfunction, and neurite shrinkage. We also tried to determine the signaling molecules that mediate the protective effect of collagen VI via Western blot and inhibitor analysis. After collagen VI treatment, UV irradiated neurons increased phosphorylation of Akt and decreased phosphorylation of JNK. Inhibiting Akt/Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3K) pathway diminished the protective effect of collagen VI. Our study suggested a potential protective mechanism by which neurons up-regulate collagen VI production under stress conditions to activate Akt/PI3K anti-apoptotic signaling pathway. (C) 2011 IBRO. C. ;Lee, L. ;Chen, C. Y. ;Tsai, W. C.Chang, W. -H.Structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties of InN dots grown on GaN by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy using the flow-rate modulation technique, and their dependence on growth conditions, were investigated. An ammonia (NH3) background flow was intentionally supplied during indium deposition periods to control the kinetics of adatoms and hence the morphology of InN dots. Samples prepared under lower NH3 background flows generally exhibit narrower and more intense PL signals peaked at lower emission energies. The authors point out that the NH3 background flow is an important parameter that controls not only the nucleation process but also the emission property of InN dots.
