Item type:Item, A New Dual-Frequency Liquid Crystal Lens with Ring-and-Pie Electrodes and a Driving Scheme to Prevent Disclination Lines and Improve Recovery Time(2011-05-01) ;Kao, Yung-Yuan ;Chao, Paul C-P. ;影像與生醫光電研究所 ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Institute of Imaging and Biomedical PhotonicsA new liquid crystal lens design is proposed to improve the recovery time with a ring-and-pie electrode pattern through a suitable driving scheme and using dual-frequency liquid crystals (DFLC) MLC-2048. Compared with the conventional single hole-type liquid crystal lens, this new structure of the DFLC lens is composed of only two ITO glasses, one of which is designed with the ring-and-pie pattern. For this device, one can control the orientation of liquid crystal directors via a three-stage switching procedure on the particularly-designed ring-and-pie electrode pattern. This aims to eliminate the disclination lines, and using different drive frequencies to reduce the recovery time to be less than 5 seconds. The proposed DFLC lens is shown effective in reducing recovery time, and then serves well as a potential device in places of the conventional lenses with fixed focus lengths and the conventional LC lens with a single circular-hole electrode pattern.Item type:Item, A New Dual-Frequency Liquid Crystal Lens with Ring-and-Pie Electrodes and a Driving Scheme to Prevent Disclination Lines and Improve Recovery Time(2011-05-01) ;Kao, Yung-Yuan ;Chao, Paul C-P. ;影像與生醫光電研究所 ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Institute of Imaging and Biomedical PhotonicsA new liquid crystal lens design is proposed to improve the recovery time with a ring-and-pie electrode pattern through a suitable driving scheme and using dual-frequency liquid crystals (DFLC) MLC-2048. The structure of interlaced electrodes aims to generate a desired non-uniform electric filed to improve the focusing ability of the LCL-lens array with lower voltage drives. This paper is organized as first to describe the design criteria of a lenticular lens sheet for wide extended graphics array LCD panel. Based on the designed lenticular lens array, an LCL-lens array with proposed interlaced electrodes is next designed. The fabrication and the detailed structure are given. A series of experiments are then conducted and successfully verify the focusing capability and desired 3D display functions, that is, to separate two images to right and left eyes. Also, the developed auto-stereoscopic 3D display is able to adapt to varied viewer locations with favorable imaging quality.Item type:Item, A novel lens cap designed for the RGB LEDs installed in an ultra-thin and directly lit backlight unit of large-sized LCD TVs(2008-02-01) ;Chao, Paul C-P. ;Shen, C. -Y. ;Chiu, C. -W. ;Huang, J. -S.Kao, Y. -Y.The objective of this study is to design a novel cone-shaped lens cap on LEDs in order to achieve high optical efficiency in an ultra-thin directly lit RGB LED backlight unit (BLU) for large-sized LCD TVs. The use of the novel lens cap could play the role of a diffuser, a low light-efficiency component in a BLU, in order to gain higher efficiency and simultaneously provide satisfactory uniformity in light distribution. The novel cone-shaped lens is coated with aluminum on the outside surface of the cone for mirroring effects to reflect most of the LED emitted light horizontally and then reflect the light at the BLU boundaries, and then, finally to the output plane. In this way, bright spots on the output plane of the BLU can be avoided, leading to increased uniformity. Simulations were conducted to design and optimize varied aspects of the designed lens and BLU, including the cone angle of the proposed lens and the LED spacing (pitch). To further achieve color balance, a known Genetic Algorithm is used to search for the optimal angular placement of each RGB LED, resulting in better color balance. Finally, a prototype BLU for large-sized 37-in. LCD TVs with the proposed lens was built to verify the expected performance.Item type:Item, An on-line optical bench tester machine for evaluating lens quality(2014-08-01) ;Chao, Paul C-P. ;Kao, Yung-Hua ;Hsu, Wei-Hsuan ;Huang, Yan-Pean電機工程學系This study is dedicated to develop an on-line automatic optical bench tester (OBT) machine for evaluating the image quality of a camera lens that is used in a lens module of a cell phone. This tester is not only suitable for conventional solid lens, but also applicable to the developing cutting-edge tunable liquid crystal lens. The testing is accomplished via a specially-designed OBT machine, which is able to automatically move the test lens based on feedback images in the optical system in the OBT to the axial position that leads to best imaging quality and also successfully measure its focus length. In the designed OBT, a commercial inspection chart is employed, along with an automatic lens-feeding machine for a quick estimate on the best possible focusing quality, which is evaluated by the well-known modulation transfer function (MTF). For actuating the feeding machine, an algorithm, assisted by the feedback MTFs, is proposed to move the test lens to the particular position that renders the best quality. In this way, the focus length-effective focal length (EFL)-of the test lens can be obtained. The proposed algorithm in fact needs much less time of actuation than a traditional tester to obtain EFL of the test lens. The designed and constructed tester is capable of measuring varied optical performance indices for the next-generation tunable lens, like liquid crystal lens.
