Item type:Item, Characterization of Hot Cracking Due to Welding of High-Strength Aluminum Alloys(2012) ;Chang, C. C. ;Chen, C. L. ;Wen, J. Y. ;Cheng, C. M.Chou, C. P.The "Spot-Varestraint Test'' was applied to assess the sensitivity of three aluminum alloys-A2024-T351, A2219-T87, and A7050-T6 to hot cracking from welding. The results indicate that the number of cracks increases with increasing augmented strain. This phenomenon occurs in both the fusion and the heat-affected zones. The number of thermal cycles also has a significant influence on the heat-affected zone; the number of hot cracks increases, especially in the heat-affected zone of the metal weld, with increasing number of thermal cycles. The compositions of these three alloys show that A2024 and A7050 have similar tendencies to be subject to hot cracking, greater than A2219. With increasing number of thermal cycles, the hot cracks show the same tendency, A2024 > A7050 > 2219.Item type:Item, Effect of Fe2O3 coating on ZnO nanowires in photoelectrochemical water splitting: A synchrotron x-ray spectroscopic and spectromicroscopic investigation(2020-06-01) ;Lu, Y. R. ;Wang, Y. F. ;Chang, H. W. ;Huang, Y. C.Chen, J. L.An array of ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires (NW) for the highly efficient absorption of light and carrier collection is developed for use in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting. The oriented NW architecture favors physical matching, providing a direct electron conduction pathway and reducing the diffusion length of photogenerated holes. This work involves a combination of spectral imaging, spectromicroscopy and in situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy; spectra are obtained under operando conditions. Direct investigation of oriented nanowires using polarization-dependent x-ray spectromicroscopy enables the determination of the relationship between anisotropic electronic orbitals and charge carrier water-splitting efficiency. The results of O K-edge STXM demonstrated that the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW exhibits strong anisotropy and thus provides higher electron-hole transport efficiency than bare ZnO. In situ XAS revealed that interfacial charge transfer between Fe 3d and Zn 4p states enhances the photoelectrochemical reaction in the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW. The photogenerated electrons of Fe2O3 are transferred from Fe 3d states to the Zn 4p state under photoelectrochemical conditions.Item type:Item, Effect of Mn substitution on electronic structure of Ca(9)Y(PO(4))(7):Eu(2+), Mn(2+) phosphor determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy(2011-10-27) ;Lu, Y. R. ;Huang, C. H. ;Chen, T. M. ;Lin, J. H.Ma, Y. R.The single-composition Ca(9)Y(PO(4))(7):Eu(2+), Mn(2+) phosphors were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. The luminescent properties and electronic structures were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The PL demonstrated energy transfer and a red-shift as the Mn doping level was increased. The energy transfer is ascribed to charge transfer between Eu and Mn. The change of the PL intensity is caused by the increased O 2p-Mn 3d hybridization. The narrowing of the band gap, which finding is supported by the red-shift, is responsible for the formation of the Mn-related states close to the conduction band minimum. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. B.Based on resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering, we report that LiCu(2)O(2) exhibits a large interchain coupling which suppresses quantum fluctuations along spin chains, and a quasi-2D short-range magnetic order prevails at temperatures above the magnetic transition. These observations unravel the fact that the ground state of LiCu(2)O(2) possesses long-range 2D-like incommensurate magnetic order rather than being a gapped spin liquid as expected from the nature of quantum spin-1/2 chains. In addition, the spin coupling along the c axis is found to be essential for inducing electric polarization.Item type:Item, Magnetic order of LiCu2O2 studied by resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering(2008-08-01) ;Huang, S. W. ;Huang, D. J. ;Okamoto, J. ;Wu, W. B.Chen, C. T.We present results of resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering measurements on single crystals of LiCu2O2 to address the magnetic order. LiCu2O2 exhibits a long-range magnetic order incommensurate with the lattice, and the modulation vector is (0.5, zeta, 0) in reciprocal lattice units with zeta similar to 0.174, depending upon the temperature. The spin-spin correlation length along the spin chain deduced from the width of momentum scan is larger than 2100 angstrom. The inter-chain correlation length that lies within the ab plane was discovered to be substantial, similar to 690 angstrom. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. C.Using measurements of polarization-dependent soft-x-ray absorption and band-structure calculations including the on-site Coulomb interaction, we investigated the symmetry of the intrinsic 3d holes in the low-dimensional quantum magnet LiCu(2)O(2) with edge-sharing spin chains. The Cu L-edge and O K-edge measurements with in-plane and out-of-plane E vectors of x ray reveal the orbital character of the valence states of Cu on different sites. The unoccupied 3d states of nominal Cu(2+) exhibit predominantly xy symmetry, whereas 3d holes of 3z(2)-r(2) symmetry reside on the nominal Cu(+) sites. Both the experimental observations and theoretical calculations agree on the hybridization of the O 2p and Cu 3d states above the Fermi level. The existence of 3d holes on Cu(+) enhances the interlayer magnetic coupling.Item type:Item, Orbital polarization of the unoccupied states in multiferroic LiCu2O2(2008-12-01) ;Chen, C. L. ;Yeh, K. C. ;Hsu, C. H. ;Hsu, Y. Y. ;Chang, C. C.Dong, C. L.Rubidium tungsten bronzes (RbxWO3) have recently attracted much attention due to their intriguing phenomena, such as complex structural phase transitions, strong electron-phonon coupling, and superconducting properties. This study investigates the local atomic and electronic structures of RbxWO3 (0.17 <= x <= 0.33). X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed a hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) phase. X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) at the W L-3-edge and Rb K-edge of RbxWO3 were carried out. The XAS analysis indicated a local distorted WO6 octahedron which leads to a splitting of e(g) and t(2g) energy states in the tungsten 5d orbital and this splitting of energy levels exhibited an asymmetrical behavior at x = 0.23 and 0.27. Overall analysis revealed a distortion of local atomic structure of the WO6 octahedra by rubidium doping, leading to the modification of the electronic structures of e(g) and t(2g) states in the tungsten 5d orbital, thereby accounting for the property changes in CDW formation and superconducting transition temperature of these materials.
