Item type:Item, A closed-form integral model of spiral inductor using the Kramers-Kronig relations(2005-11-01) ;Chen, CC ;Huang, JK ;Cheng, YT ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsIn this letter, a closed-form integral model is presented for the rectangular micromachined spiral inductor. The Kramers-Kronig relations provide an elegant theory to describe the inductor behavior without having complicated geometric analysis. Simulation and measurement results validate that the model can provide satisfactory prediction to the inductance of on-chip freely-suspended spiral inductors. Meanwhile, unlike conventional Greenhouse-based formulations, the self-resonant frequency of inductor can be predicted using the integral model.Item type:Item, A fully planar microstrip coupled-line coupler with a high coupling level(2005-07-20) ;Chen, CC ;Kuo, JT ;Jiang, M ;Chin, A傳播研究所A fully planar microstrip coupler with a high coupling level tip to 4 dB is fabricated on PCB. Based on the conventional coupled-line structure, a gap Size of coupled lines about 14 mu m is realized by low cost IC process. It has a single stage and requires no bond wire. In measurement, a bandwidth more than 50% and isolation and return loss better than -20 dB are achieved. The measured responses have good agreement with EM simulation data. Using scanning probe lithography, mask patterns for SiNWs were defined on a (110)-oriented bare silicon wafer. Subsequently silicon nitride spacers were produced and utilized to protect SiNWs during a dry-oxidation process, which was applied to isolate the SiNWs from the substrate. The field induced oxide mask patterns generated with a scanning probe microscope were around 50-60 mn in width, and SiNWs with 34 nm in width and 160 nm in height resulted after wet potassium hydroxide (KOH) orientation-dependent etching at 40degrees for 400 s. SiNWs with line width around 34 mn on the bare silicon wafer were achieved with the scanning probe lithography process and conventional IC processing. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The cross coupling mechanism is realized by magnetic coupling from the short ends of the resonator. The proposed magnetic coupling solves the problem of response limitation of folded quarter-wave resonator cross-coupled filters that were introduced previously using electrical cross coupling. Several quadruplet and trisection filters are proposed and fabricated. The measured results matched well with the theoretical prediction.Item type:Item, A programmable concurrent video signal processor(1996) ;Chen, CC ;Jen, CW ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsItem type:Item, A robust high-Q micromachined RF inductor for RFIC applications(2005-07-01) ;Lin, JW ;Chen, CC ;Cheng, YT ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsIn this paper, a robust micromachined spiral inductor with a cross-shaped sandwich membrane support is proposed and fabricated with fully CMOS compatible post-processes for radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) applications. Via the incorporation of a sandwich dielectric membrane (0.7 mu M SiO2/0.7 mu M Si3N4/0.7 mu m TEOS) to enhance the structure rigidity, the inductor can have better signal stability. In comparison, the new design of a similar to 5-nH micromachined inductor can have 45% less inductance variation than the one without the dielectric support while both devices are operated with 10 m/s(2) acceleration. Meanwhile, using a cross shape instead of blanket membrane can also effectively eliminate the inductance variation induced by the working temperature change (20 degrees C to 75 degrees C). The measurement results show the robust inductor can have similar electrical performance to the as-fabricated freely suspended inductor, which has five times Q (quality factor) improvement than the inductor without the substrate removal. It is our belief that the new micromachined inductors can have not only high-Q performance but also better signal stability suitable for wide-range RFIC applications.Item type:Item, AC power loss and signal coupling in very large scale integration backend interconnects(2006-04-01) ;Chen, CC ;Kao, HL ;Liao, CC ;Chin, AMcAlister, SPBoth the coupling and AC power losses in integrated circuit interconnects in the radio-frequency regime have been measured. The AC power loss decreases with decreasing length, decreasing spacing, and increasing inter metal dielectric (IMD) thickness of parallel metal lines. The unwanted signal coupling and cross-talk monotonically decrease with increasing spacing and decreasing length of the parallel metal lines. However, increasing the IMD thickness from 0.7 to 6 mu m improves the low frequency performance but not the maximum operation frequency. Using a high-resistivity Si (HRS) substrate the AC power loss is significantly reduced but is traded off with an increase in coupling loss. The most effective method of reducing both the AC power and coupling losses is the combined use of three dimensional (3D) integration and an HRS, which gives larger than 1-2 orders of magnitude improvement, up to 20 GHz.Item type:Item, Accuracy of the EasyTouch blood glucose self-monitoring system: a study of 516 cases(2004-11-01) ;Dai, KS ;Tai, DY ;Ho, P ;Chen, CCPeng, WCBackground: Self-monitoring blood glucose device is an important toot for diabetes patients to efficiently control their blood glucose concentrations. We evaluated the accuracy of EasyTouch glucose monitoring system. Methods: Capillary blood glucose concentrations measured using EasyTouch and the reference values obtained from Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) 2300 STAT were performed in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Wei-Gong Memorial Hospital. Results were evaluated using (1) linear regression analysis, (2) Clarke Error Grid analysis, (3) percentage of readings within a defined range of deviation from the reference value, (4) bias plots, and (5) coefficients of variation (CVs) calculated from 60 measurements in series. Results: The window of the 516 EasyTouch readings covered a range from 42 to 555 mg/dl. Linear regression analysis yielded a regression slope 0.9972, intercept 1.899 mg/dl, r(2) 0.9571, and Syx 14.89 mg/dl. A Clarke Error Grid analysis showed 100% of the EasyTouch readings in clinically acceptable zones A and B. Of the EasyTouch readings, 98.3%, 91.9%, 78.3% and 46.9% were found within +/-20%, +/-15%, +/-10%, and +/-5%, respectively, of the reference values. Further analysis showed that the percentage of EasyTouch readings within the defined intervals was similar in three glucose ranges (less than or equal to100, 101-200, and greater than or equal to201 mg/dl). The CVs for the four lots of strips (lot 1 to lot 4) ranged from 3.5 to 5.5%, 2.1 to 4.8%, 1.8 to 3.6%, and 3.0 to 5.7%, respectively. Conclusions: EasyTouch provides high accurate and precise glucose readings over a wide range of glucose concentrations. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The Soret band in the absorption spectrum of ZnPP/AAO thin-film samples becomes much broader than that observed for ZnPP/THF solutions, and the relative intensity of the Q band is distinctly enhanced for the former. The broad Soret band overlaps the enhanced Q band increasingly as the degree of aggregation increases with increasing duration of immersion, with initial concentration of ZnPP/THF solutions, or with decreasing pore size of AAO nanotubes. A strong excitonic coupling between the Soret and Q transition dipoles causes the absorption spectrum of the ZnPP/AAO system to cover the entire visible spectral region. Emission spectra of ZnPP/AAO samples in the steady state contain multiple resolvable components assigned to monomer, dimer and higher aggregates. The observed systematic variation of emission spectra of ZnPP/AAO samples is consistent with the observation in absorption spectra of the system and reflects the significance of aggregation of ZnPP in a specific nanoporous environment.Item type:Item, An evaluation of clinical accuracy of the EasyTouch blood uric acid self-monitoring system(2005-03-01) ;Dai, KS ;Tai, DY ;Ho, P ;Chen, CCPeng, WCObjectives: Self-monitoring blood uric acid device is an important tool for patients to efficiently monitor their blood uric acid concentrations. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of EasyTouch uric acid monitoring system. Design and methods: Capillary blood uric acid concentrations measured using EasyTouch and the reference values obtained from COBAS MIRA were performed in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Wei-Gong Memorial Hospital. Results were evaluated using (1) linear regression analysis, (2) percentage of readings within a defined range of deviation from the reference value, and (3) coefficients of variation (CVs) calculated from 60 measurements in series. Results: The window of the 177 EasyTouch readings covered a wide range from 0.1785 to 0.6367 mmol/L (3-10.7 mg/dL). Linear regression analysis yielded a regression slope of 0.975, an intercept of 0.0118 mmol/L and an R-2 of 0.8966. Of the EasyTouch readings, 64 (36.2%), 61 (34.5%), 34 (19.2%), 9 (5.08%), and 9 (5.08%) were within the intervals of <5%, 5-10%, 10-15%, 15-17%, and >17%, respectively, of the reference values. Further analysis for the performance of each lot of strips showed that both coefficients of correlation and the percentages of readings within the CLIA's criterion (+/-17%), respectively, were in a narrow range from 0.8777 to 0.9541 and from 92.1% to 100%. The CVs for the seven lots of strips (lot I to lot 7) ranged from 2.93% to 6.33%, 3.2% to 5.9%, 3.64% to 7.0%, 2.84% to 7.6%, 2.68% to 5.42%, 3.03% to 6.93%, and 3.18% to 5.17%, respectively. Conclusion: EasyTouch is an acceptable diagnostic device which provides accurate uric acid measurements. (C) 2004 The Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists. An analytical model was developed for predicting the force-deformation response for composite stub columns with various structural steel sections and volumetric lateral reinforcement. Constitutive relationships were established for materials used in the composite cross section, which included unconfined concrete, partially and highly confined concrete, structural steel section, and longitudinal reinforcing bar. The axial capacity of composite stub columns can be determined from strengths contributed from each material component following the stress-strain relationship. Analytical results show that the axial load-carrying capacity and force-deformation behavior measured in the experiments can be accurately predicted. In addition to the lateral reinforcement, the structural steel section can provide a confinement effect on the concrete and enhance the axial capacity and post-peak strength. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Data from multiple ultrasonic range sensors are fused into a representation called Heuristic Asymmetric Mapping to deal with the problem of uncertainties in the raw sensory data caused mainly by the transducer's beam-opening angle and specular reflections. It features a fast data-refresh rate to handle a dynamic environment. Potential-field method is used for on-line path planning based on the constructed grid-type sonar map. The mobile robot can therefore learn to find a safe path according to its self-built sonar map. To solve the problem of local minima in conventional potential field method, a new type of potential function is formulated. This new method is simple and fast in execution using the concept from distance-transform path-finding algorithms. The developed navigation system has been tested on our experimental mobile robot to demonstrate its possible application in practical situations. Several interesting simulation and experimental results are presented.Item type:Item, Application of Heuristic Asymmetric Mapping for mobile robot navigation using ultrasonic sensors(1996-11-01) ;Song, KT ;Chen, CC ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringIn this paper, an experimental study of a navigation system that allows a mobile robot to travel in an environment about which it has no prior knowledge is described. Parameters studied and designed in twelve specimens included the concrete compressive strength and the number of layers of CFRP laminates. Square specimens were simply supported along four sides and the monotonically concentrated load was applied to the stub column during the test. Test results showed that the ultimate punching shear strength of the flat slab can be substantially increased by the application of the CFRP laminates.Item type:Item, Behavior of steel beam to circular CFT column connections(2003) ;Chen, CC ;Lo, SH ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThis paper describes the structural behavior of connections between concrete-filled tubular (CFT) steel column and steel beam. The connections are characterized with the flange plates penetrated through the column. Four beam-to-column subassemblage specimens were tested under reversal loading. Specimens with strong shear capacity in the panel zone demonstrated stable hysteresis behavior by forming the plastic hinge in the beam. Specimen having panel zone shear yielding resulted in pinching hysteresis curve, which was caused by the diagonal shear cracking of the concrete inside the steel tube. The shear capacity of the CFT column in the panel zone is contributed from the steel tube and concrete core and can be estimated by superposition of the strengths of the steel tube and the concrete.Item type:Item, Behaviour of steel moment connections with a single flange rib(2003-09-01) ;Chen, CC ;Lee, JM ;Lin, MC ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringThis paper presents a study of flange rib moment connections for use in steel moment-resisting frames. The connections are strengthened by welding a vertical rib to the beam flange and the column flange. The rib is characterized by an extension. Finite element analysis and experiments were conducted to elucidate the behaviour of lengthened rib reinforced connections. The results of the finite element analysis established the effectiveness of the lengthened rib in mitigating local stress concentrations and forming the plastic hinge zone in the beam. Two full-scale proof-test specimens behaved as observed by the analysis, and exhibited greater than 3% radians of plastic rotation under cyclic load. Without brittle fracture, both specimens developed a plastic hinge in the beam. Extensive yielding and local buckling occurred in the beam flanges and the web. The connections strengthened with a single flange rib were successfully verified by the test. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. It is observed that as oxide thickness is scaled down to 4 nn, some traditional monitor parameters may lose their sensitivity for detecting oxide degradation induced by plasma charging damage, due to insignificant trap generation. Even the gate leakage current, although sensitive for 4 nm oxide, may no longer be sensitive enough for even thinner oxide (e.g., 2.6 nm), due to the existence of large tunneling current. Moreover, several soft-breakdown events were found to occur in ultrathin oxide before the final onset of a catastrophic hard-breakdown. Finally, an equivalent local oxide thickness is calculated using local oxide thinning model to estimate the stepwise increase of gate current after soft-breakdown event.Item type:Item, Characteristics of the erbium doped fiber amplifier with polarization mode dispersion compensation(2003-07-01) ;Dung, JC ;Chi, S ;Chen, CC ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe have experimentally demonstrated the characteristics of the reflective type erbium-doped fiber amplifier (R-EDFA) which is composed of a circulator and a Faraday rotator mirror. It is shown that the gain spectrum of the R-EDFA is shifted to longer wavelength when compared with that of the conventional single-pass EDFA. For the R-EDFA. the forward pumping is better than the backward pumping in gain and noise figure. Besides, the reflective structure can be used as a broad band light source because its ASE spectrum is wider and the output power is higher. We also show that, by using the reflective type configuration, the polarization dependent gain is reduced and the polarization mode dispersion of EDF can be completely compensated but the polarization mode dispersion from the circulator is still survived. It explores the optimal quantization on the real-valued LUT with optimal global scaling and error distribution, and we apply an effective error measure to estimate the quantization error on the FIR coefficients. Our approach enables designers to explicitly trade the quality for simple implementations at finer granularity than that solely by reducing the coefficient wordlengths. Moreover, in our simulations, the proposed method can save 30%similar to 40% silicon area of conventional DA-based FIR filters under identical error constraints.
