Once the damage occurs, the soft-story mechanism is likely to take place and possibly to result in the failure of the whole system with more damage accumulation. In this study, we use a strongback column which is an additional structural component extending along the height of the building, to redistribute the excessive deformation of SCBF and activate more structural members to dissipate energy and thus avoid damage concentration and improve the seismic performance of SCBF. We tested one-third-scaled, three-story, double-story X SCBF specimens with static cyclic loading procedure. Three specimens, namely S73, S42 and S0, which represent different combinations of stiffness and strength factors a and beta for the strongback columns, were designed based on results of numerical simulations. Specimens S73 and S42 were the specimens with the strongback columns, and SO is the specimen without the strongback column. Test results show that the deformation distribution of Specimen S73 is more uniform and more brace members in three stories perform nonlinearly. Comparing Drift Concentration Factor (DCF), we can observe 29% and 11% improvement in Specimen S73 and S42, respectively. This improvement increases the nonlinear demand of the third-story braces and reduces that of the first-story braces where the demand used to be excessive, and, therefore, postpones the rupture of the first-story braces and enhances the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the whole SCBF system.Item type:Item, Evaluation of loading sequences on testing capacity of concentrically braced frame structures(2017-03) ;Chen, Chui-Hsin ;Hu, Huai-Kuo ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringStatic cyclic loading tests are commonly used to evaluate the seismic capacity of a structure. However, different loading sequences would result in different structural behavior. To quantify the effects of loading sequences on the structural capacity, we investigate the experimental behavior of braces in concentrically braced frames (CBF) under different loading sequences. The variables for testing program includes two different pipe sections (different slenderness as well) and three loading protocols, namely, loading sequence for beam-to-column moment connections (151), loading sequence for link-to-column connections (LS2) and proposed loading sequence for CBF structures (153). After tests, we compare the critical performance parameters of different specimens including the failure modes, maximum deformation, cumulative energy, etc. Test results show that the specimens fracture at different deformation stages under different loading sequences. The specimens accumulate energy the fastest under LS1. The maximum cumulative energy is less correlated to the loading sequences. The test results also show that the rate of cumulative deformation under LS1 is too fast for CBF structures; the rate under 152, on the contrary, is a little slow for CBF structures. LS3 is more suitable for braces in regard to failure modes, cumulative deformation rate, cumulative energy rate, and deformation amplitude. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Steel box columns have been widely adopted in seismically active areas, such as Japan and Taiwan. It is a common practice to weld diaphragm plates to the inner walls of steel box columns using the ESW process. However, there is still a lack of study evaluating the seismic performance of these steel box-column connections. In the first part of this paper, a literature review examines ESW stiffeners and their impacts on steel box-column connections. In the second part, finite element analysis is conducted on ESW misalignment and eccentricity. The result shows a correlation between connection failures and ESW stiffeners. In addition, ESW fusion diameters can affect the connections more significantly than ESW eccentricities and the thickness of diaphragm plates.
