Even though the typical modulation bandwidth of a WRC-FPLD is only similar to 1.25 GHz, using spectrally-efficient 32-QAM OFDM or SC-FDE modulation, 20-Gbps uplink signals can achieve the FEC limit after 25-km dispersion-uncompensated single-mode fiber transmission. Because of the advantage of lower PAPR, the SC-FDE signals outperform the OFDM signals with the fixed 32-QAM format in the proposed system; moreover, SC-FDE scheme can be another promising candidate for uplinks in WDM-PONs, for its simplification to ONUs. The signal at the mode of 1560.7 nm shows similar quality with the signal at the modes of 1545.3 nm and 1574.7 nm, the WRC-FPLD, accordingly, has wide injection wavelength range from at least 1545.3 nm to 1574.7 nm. With the mode spacing of 0.55 nm, consequently, we have demonstrated the applicability of the colorless WRC-FPLD on supporting up to 36 channels in the WDM-PON. However, based on the current tree-architecture, existing OFDM PON systems face severe challenges when increasing the scalability and data-rate performance. In this paper, we propose a novel virtual-tree architecture of an OFDMA PON system (VTOPS). Coupled with the use of inexpensive direct modulation, VTOPS simultaneously achieves high reliability, scalability, and spectrum efficiency (i.e., high data rate) in a cost-effective manner. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that, by applying the pre-emphasis algorithm and subchannel adaptive modulation, VTOPS achieves 40-Gb/s downlink and uplink transmissions using low-cost 10-GHz directly modulated lasers.Item type:Item, Adaptive filtering for white-light LED visible light communication(2017-01) ;Hsu, Chin-Wei ;Chen, Guan-Hong ;Wei, Liang-Yu ;Chow, Chi-WaiLu, I-ChengWhite-light phosphor-based light-emitting diode (LED) can be used to provide lighting and visible light communication (VLC) simultaneously. However, the long relaxation time of phosphor can reduce the modulation bandwidth and limit the VLC data rate. Recent VLC works focus on improving the LED modulation bandwidths. Here, we propose and demonstrate the use of adaptive Volterra filtering (AVF) to increase the data rate of a white-light LED VLC system. The detailed algorithm and implementation of the AVF for the VLC system have been discussed. Using our proposed electrical frontend circuit and the proposed AVF, a significant data rate enhancement to 700.68 Mbit/s is achieved after 1-m free-space transmission using a single white-light phosphor-based LED. Based on a new two-tiered semi-tree architecture, NEWOPS allows a large number of ONUs to be connected to OLT using only a handful of colorless transceivers. Due to the architecture, NEWOPS not only facilitates high spectral efficiency and flexible sub-channel bandwidth allocation, but also reduces the Rayleigh backscattering (RB) problem and achieves high energy and cost efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that, taking only 5-GHz bandwidth for each wavelength, NEWOPS successfully achieves 20-Gb/s downstream and 10-Gb/s upstream OFDM-xQAM transmissions via the same fiber trunk. We depict that, to support 40 ONUs for example, NEWOPS achieves energy efficiency that is three to six times higher than that of a typical 10-Gb/s WDM/OFDM PON.Item type:Item, Analysis of Nonlinear Distortion and SSII Cancellation in EAM-Based IMDD OFDM Transmission(2015-07-15) ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Cheng, Hsuan-Lin ;Chen, Hsing-Yu ;Chen, Yu-ChaoChu, Hsuan-HaoIn terms of second-order nonlinearity, nonlinear distortion in an EAM-based IMDD OFDM system is deterministically modeled as subcarrier-to-subcarrier intermixing interference ( SSII), such that DSP-based nonlinear compensation can be provided by decision-aided SSII cancellation at the receiver. The effectiveness of SSII cancellation heavily relies on the accuracy of SSII calculation, which is determined mainly by the modulation model adopted. This study made comprehensive comparisons of three small-signal models (constant-chirp, dynamic-chirp, and nonlinear-E/O models). We then combined theory and experiment results to examine the characteristics of SSII estimation and cancellation using various models, such as SSII spectra, regression coefficients, and correlation coefficients between the SSII and the total received errors, as well as the relationship between improvements in performance and the correlation coefficient. The nonlinear-E/O model is the most comprehensive, and as a result presents the flattest regression coefficient and highest correlation coefficient, which results in the most pronounced improvement in performance.Item type:Item, Comparison of VSB PAM4 and OOK Signal in an EML-Based 80-km Transmission System(2017-12-01) ;Chen, Hsing-Yu ;Lee, Jeffrey ;Kaneda, Noriaki ;Chen, JyehongChen, Young-KaiA comparison between 51.84-Gb/s vestigial sideband 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and ON-OFF keying (OOK) signals at a transmission distance of 80 km is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. An electro-absorption modulated laser-based intensity-modulation and direct-detection 80-km transmission is achieved using both modulation formats without dispersion compensating fiber. The relative frequency between single sideband filter and signal is adjusted to find an optimized condition for both carrier to signal power ratio and sideband suppression ratio. The experimental results show that with linear equalization and without bandwidth limitation, the OOK signal has a 4-dB better sensitivity compared with PAM4 after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission.Item type:Item, Cost-effective 33-Gbps intensity modulation direct detection multi-band OFDM LR-PON system employing a 10-GHz-based transceiver(2011-08-29) ;Hsu, Dar-Zu ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Chen, Hsing-Yu ;Li, Wei-YuanChen, JyehongWe develop a dynamic multi-band OFDM subcarrier allocation scheme to fully utilize the available bandwidth under the restriction of dispersion-and chirp-related power fading. The experimental results successfully demonstrate an intensity-modulation-direct-detection 34.78-Gbps OFDM signal transmissions over 100-km long-reach (LR) passive-optical networks (PONs) based on a cost-effective 10-GHz EAM and a 10-GHz PIN. Considering 0-100-km transmission bandwidth of a 10-GHz EAM, the narrowest bandwidth is theoretically evaluated to occur at similar to 40 km, instead of 100 km. Consequently, the performances of 20-100-km PONs are experimentally investigated, and at least 33-Gbps capacity is achieved to support LR-PONs of all possible 20-100-km radii. (C) 2010 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, Cost-Effective OFDM Transmission Technologies for Long-Reach PONs(2015-01-01) ;Hsu, Dar-Zu ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Chen, Hsing-Yu ;Chen, Jyehong光電工程學系Item type:Item, Design and demonstration of a colorless WDM-OFDMA PON system architecture achieving symmetric 20-Gb/s transmissions with residual interference compensation(2013-09-09) ;Chen, Hsing-Yu ;Yuang, Maria ;Tien, Po-Lung ;Hsu, Dar-ZuWei, Chia-ChienIn this paper, we propose a two-tiered colorless WDM-OFDMA PON system architecture that draws strengths from each individual WDM and OFDM PON systems. Specifically, the two-tiered architecture enables a colorless transceiver to be shared by a group of ONUs, resulting in drastic reduction of the system cost. For achieving colorlessness via reusing downstream light sources, we discover the residual power of downstream signal unexpectedly springs back after transmissions, causing severe interference to the upstream signal, and thus limiting the data rate of the upstream signal. We devise a method of adopting a common dispersion compensation module at OLT to reduce the residual power over all wavelengths. Experimental results show that, with an improvement of upstream signal's SNR up to 10dB, the system successfully achieves 20-Gb/s bidirectional OFDM-signal transmissions on the same wavelength over a 20-km SMF.
