Item type:Item, Black matrices surface treatment for color filters ink jet printing process(2007) ;Shin, You-Ru ;Wu, Siang-Jhih ;Cheng, Jung-An ;Chen, Huang-Ming P.Li, Huai-AnAn inkjet printing process for color filter fabrication is one of key technologies for next generation processes. To prevent ink overflow from the black matrices (BM) bank, two effective surface pre-treatments were introduced in this study. The contact angle of chemical treatment and CFx plasma treatment can be increased from 12 to 52 degrees and 12 to 27 for red ink, respectively.Item type:Item, Color Management for Flexible Cholesteric-LCD(2009) ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Cheng, Cheng-Fu ;Liu, Yuh-Ferng ;Cheng, Wei-ChungHuang, Jih-FonThe reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display suffers from voltage-induced color shift and viewing angle-dependent color shift. In this paper, two solutions are presented to overcome these problems. First, four types of cholesteric liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized to find the best mixture with the lowest voltage-induced color shift and reflectance reduction. Secondly, 5-primary (red, yellow, green, cyan and blue) cholesteric liquid crystals were synthesized such that the color gamut and reflectance were enhanced.Item type:Item, Color Management for Flexible Cholesteric-LCD under LED Illumination(2009-01-01) ;Cheng, Wei-Chung ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Huang, Jih-Fon ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThe reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display suffers from voltage-induced color shift and viewing angle-dependent color shift. In this paper, three solutions are presented to overcome these problems. First, four types of cholesteric liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized to find the best mixture with the lowest voltage-induced color shift and reflectance reduction. Secondly, 5-primary (red, yellow, green, cyan and blue) cholesteric liquid crystals were synthesized such that the color gamut and reflectance were enhanced. Finally, the viewing angle-dependent color shift was characterized and then compensated by adjusting the chromaticity of the red/green/blue LED light sources.Item type:Item, Eco-Display - an LCD-TV Powered by a Battery?(2009) ;Shieh, Han-Ping D. ;Huang, Yi-Pai ;Lin, Fang-Chen ;Chen, Huang-Ming P.Cheng, Yu-KuoColor break-up (CBU) is a lethal issue of a high light efficiency field-sequential-color (FSC) LCD. Applying local color-backlight-dimming technology to FSC-LCDs, we demonstrated "Stencil-FSC" methods with afield rate as low as 120Hz to render a high luminance "multi-color" image on the first-field and effectively suppress CB U at the same time. In addition, the color filterless LCD with an intelligent LED backlight and even non polarized LC cell, optical thruput can increase by a factor of 10, yet with lower material cost/count for an Eco-Display.Item type:Item, Free alignment defect, low driving voltage of half-V ferroelectric liquid crystal device(2009-08-24) ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Lin, Chi-Wen ;光電工程學系 ;顯示科技研究所Department of PhotonicsThe horizontal chevron alignment defect in half-V mode ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) cell can be reduced by asymmetrical alignment hybrid cell. The low free energy level generated from the interaction between spontaneous polarization and opposite polar alignment surfaces was found. As a result, uniformly aligned FLC cell can be achieved without applied external voltage. The R3206 FLC material is applied as model compound. The contrast ratio of R3206-70 is greatly enhanced from 76 to 780 with 1.0 ms response time under 5 V.Item type:Item, Large area color filter fabrication by using ink-jet printing technology(2008) ;Wu, Siang-Jhih ;Cheng, Jung-An ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Shin, You-RuShieh, Han-Ping D.A novel ink jet printing process without additional photolithography process for large area color filter fabrication has been developed in this study. A 100x100 mm(2) model of 32" color filters was fabricated for evaluation. New developed RGB inks were able to achieve 73% NTSC standard with the thickness of R, G, and B films at 1.80, 1.90, and 1.80 pm, respectively. The overflow issue can be solved by surface pretreatments, and color inks formulation.Item type:Item, Rib-free Ink-Jet Printing Fabrication on Heterogeneous Surfaces(2010) ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Wu, Siang-Jhih ;Tong, Feng-Ching ;Cheng, Jung-AnShieh, Han-Ping D.Rib-free ink-jet printing device fabrication on hetrogeneous surfaces opens a new possibility for greener processes. The integrity of ink droplets was maintained with less than 3 degrees contact angle differences on the heterogeneous surfaces after surface treatment. The breaking of color lines and color mixing were avoided by accelerating solvent evaporation. The inks were greatly conserved without the need for additional lithography process for rib structure. (C) 2010 The Japan Society of Applied PhysicsItem type:Item, Rib-less Ink-Jet-Printed 4-in.-Panel Color-Filter Fabrication(2009) ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Wu, Siang-Jhih ;Cheng, Jung-An ;Tong, Feng-ChingShieh, Han-Ping D.A 4 "color filter panel was successfully prepared by rib-less ink jet printing process. The smeared ink issue can be controlled by surface treatment on both Cr and glass with similar contact angle. The color line formation can be prepared by either two-step printing process at room temperature or one-step printing at elevated temperature. The thickness of red, green and blue films were about 1.2 mu m, 1.0 mu m and 1.0 mu m, respectively. The panel's NTSC value was estimated at 53.5 +/- 0.7%.Item type:Item, Splay-to-Bend Transition-Free Reactive Monomer Modified Pi-Cell(2009-05-01) ;Chen, Szu-Fen F. ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Chow, Liansing ;Chang, Yu-YunShieh, Han-Ping D.A reactive monomer modified Pi-cell (RMM-Pi-cell) comprising a layer of liquid crystal (LC) reactive monomer on one surface was prepared to control the surface pretilt angle. The simulation results suggested that a transition-free Pi-cell can be prepared by asymmetrical cell with one 8 degrees pretilt angle and the other surface greater than 47 degrees when the cell gap was smaller than 4 mu m. The nematic reactive monomer layer has a molecular average tilt angle over 80 degrees which allowed the LC molecules to be arranged in a favored bend state in the asymmetrical cell. The critical voltages cannot be found in all 3-mu m RMM-Pi-cells. The cell retardation data confirmed the initial bend orientation with zero voltage applied. Moreover, the light leakage of dark state was reduced. The contrast ratio of RMM-Pi-cell was improved by a factor of 11 compared with an original Pi-cell without using compensation film.Item type:Item, Titanyl Phthalocyanine (TiOPc) Organic Thin Film Transistors with Highly pi-pi Interaction(2010) ;Chen, Huang-Ming P. ;Chen, Yung-Hsing ;Lin, Bo-Ruei ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThe objective of this research is to obtain uniform vacuum-deposition triclinic phase II crystal of titanyl phthalocyanine (alpha-TiOPc) films from various TiOPc crystal forms. The crystal structure and morphology of vacuum-deposited TiOPc films can be manipulated by deposition rate and substrate temperature. Crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thin film morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Highly ordered alpha-TiOPc film with an edge-on molecular orientation was deposited on octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) treated Si/SiO2 surface. All TiOPc crystal forms, such as amorphous, alpha and gamma phases, provided the triclinic phase II crystal of TiOPc. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the peak at 7.5 degree in XRD spectra was 0.23, 0.27 and 0.29 for gamma, alpha and amorphous powder when substrate temperature maintained at 180 degrees C, respectively. The FWHM of the 7.5 degree peak can be achieved 0.22 deposited from all crystal forms at elevated temperature higher than 220 degrees C. The alpha-TiOPc deposition film exhibited an excellent p-type semiconducting behavior in air with dense packing structure due to the close pi-pi molecular packing. The devices, field-effect mobility range from 0.02 to 0.26 cm(2)/V s depending on various process parameters. The on/off current ratio (I-on/I-off) is over 10(5). The TiOPc OTFTs will be applied as multi-parameter gas sensor in the near future.
