Item type:Item, A Computational Model of the Relationship Between Musical Rhythm and Heart Rhythm(2009) ;Wang, Hui-Min ;Lin, Shih-Hsiang ;Huang, Yu-Chieh ;Chen, I-ChengChou, Lei-ChunHeart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of variation in the heart rate. Over the last 25 years, HRV analysis has became utilized more often as a non-invasive research and clinical tool for indirectly investigating both cardiac and autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions in health and disease. In our experiment, 22 healthy subjects and four testing rhythm patterns are studied. How the three musical-rhythmic characteristics of tempo, complexity and drum sample affect the performance of HRV is discussed and a computational model with four factors is proposed. This relationship can help us to improve our life and health by music.Item type:Item, Novel Lactulose and Melibiose Targeting Autophagy to Reduce PolyQ Aggregation in Cell Models of Spinocerebellar Ataxia 3(2016) ;Lin, Chih-Hsin ;Wu, Yih-Ru ;Yang, Jinn-Moon ;Chen, Wan-LingChao, Chih-YingTrehalose, a chemical chaperone and mTOR-independent autophagy enhancer, has shown promise in models of Huntington\'s disease, Parkinson\'s disease and tauopathies. In this study, two trehalase analogs, lactulose and melibiose, were examined for their potentials in spinocerebellar ataxia treatment. Using a SCA3 ATXN3/Q(75)-GFP cell model, we found that the ATXN3/Q(75) aggregation was significantly prohibited by lactulose and melibiose because of their abilities to up-regulate autophagy. Meanwhile, lactulose and melibiose reduced reactive oxygen species production in ATXN3/Q(75) cells. Both of them further inhibited the ATXN3/Q(75) aggregation in neuronally differentiated SH-SY5Y cells. These findings suggest the therapeutic applications of novel trehalose analogs in polyglutamine aggregation-associated neurodegenerative diseases.Item type:Item, Photodissociation cross sections of ClOOCl at 248.4 and 266 nm(2009-11-07) ;Lien, Chien-Yu ;Lin, Wei-Yen ;Chen, Hsueh-Ying ;Huang, Wen-TsungJin, BingThis study utilized a mass-resolved detection of ClOOCl to determine its photodissociation cross section, which is the product of the absorption cross section and dissociation quantum yield. An effusive molecular beam of ClOOCl was generated and its photodissociation probability was determined through measuring the decrease in the ClOOCl beam intensity upon laser irradiation. By comparing with a reference molecule, the absolute cross sections of ClOOCl were obtained without knowing its absolute concentration. The determined cross section of ClOOCl at 248.4 nm is (8.85 +/- 0.42)x10(-18) cm(2) at 200 K, significantly larger than previously reported values. The temperature dependence of the cross section was investigated at 248.4 nm in the range of 160-260 K; only a very small and negative temperature effect was observed. Because 248.4 nm is very close to the peak of the UV absorption band of ClOOCl, this work provides a new calibration point for normalizing relative absorption spectra of ClOOCl. In this work, the photodissociation cross section at 266 nm and 200 K was also reported to be (4.13 +/- 0.21)x10(-18) cm(2).Item type:Item, Photodissociation dynamics of ClOOCl at 248.4 and 308.4 nm(2011) ;Huang, Wen-Tsung ;Chen, Andrew F. ;Chen, I-Cheng ;Tsai, Chen-HsunLin, Jim Jr-MinThe dynamics of ClOOCl photodissociation at 248.4 and 308.4 nm was studied with photofragment translational spectroscopy. At 248.4 nm photoexcitation, the observed products are Cl, O(2), ClO and O. Product translational energy distributions P(E) and anisotropy parameters beta were deduced from the measured time-of-flight spectra of the Cl, O(2), and ClO photoproducts. The photodissociation mechanisms have been discussed and compared with available theoretical results. Synchronous and fast sequential breaking of the two Cl-O bonds may both contribute to the dissociation. The relative product yields for [ClO] : [Cl] was measured to be 0.15 +/- 0.04 : 1. The relative amounts of [O] : [O(2)] products were estimated to be 0.12 : 1. The branching ratios among the Cl + O(2) + Cl : ClO + ClO : ClO + Cl + O product channels were estimated to be 0.82 : 0.08 : 0.10. At 308.4 nm excitation, time-of-flight spectra of the O(2) and ClO photoproducts were recorded while there was interference from Cl(2) impurity in detecting the Cl product. Nonetheless, the observed ClO yield relative to the O(2) yield at 308.4 nm is 1.5 times that at 248.4 nm. The branching ratio between the Cl + O(2) + Cl : ClO + ClO product channels was estimated to be 0.81 : 0.19 at 308.4 nm. This result suggests that the ClO product may contribute a noticeable yield in the photolysis of ClOOCl at the atmospherically important wavelengths above 300 nm.Item type:Item, Photolysis Cross-Section of Ozone Dimer(2011-11-04) ;Chen, I-Cheng ;Chen, Andrew F. ;Huang, Wen-Tsung ;Takahashi, KaitoLin, Jim J.
