The studied device structure has a 3/2 lambda asymmetric cavity design, which can let the internal transit time of injected carriers be as short as that of 1/2 lambda cavity design and further improve its performance in terms of speed and output power for high single-mode operation. Our proposed VCSEL structure with p-type doping shows superior modulation speed with an output power comparable with that of the un-doped reference device under room temperature operation. Furthermore, when the operating temperature reaches 85 degrees C, there is a significant improvement in both the modulation speed and maximum power of the p-doped structures. According to our simulation, this can be attributed to the change in the quasi-Fermi levels of the injected carriers after the addition of p-doping in the active layers, which minimizes the electron leakage under high-temperature operation.Item type:Item, A continuously tunable and filterless optical millimeter-wave generation via frequency octupling(2009-10-26) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Jiang, Wen-Jr ;Chen, Jason (Jyehong)Peng, Peng-ChunThis work proposes a cost-effective, continuously tunable and filterless optical millimeter-wave (MMW) signal generation employing frequency octupling. Optical MMW signals with 30-dB undesired sideband suppression ratios can be obtained. Since no optical filtering is required, the proposed system can be readily implemented in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) systems. V-band 60-GHz and W-band 80-GHz optical MMW signals are experimentally demonstrated. Because of the high undesired sideband suppression ratio, 60-GHz waveform with 50% duty cycle is observed. The single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of the generated 60-GHz signal is -73 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz. The proposed system is a viable solution for the future ultra-high frequency MMW applications up to 320 GHz using the external modulator with a limited bandwidth of 40 GHz. A High spectral efficiency 5-Gb/s 16-QAM OFDM signal with frequency multiplication for the RoF downstream link is demonstrated, and negligible penalty is achieved after 25-km standard single mode fiber transmission. Furthermore, wavelength reuse for a 1.25-Gb/s OOK signal via a RSOA for the upstream link is also demonstrated with a receiver penalty of less than 0.5 dB following 25-km SMF transmission. Unlike the traditional double-sideband with optical carrier suppression modulation scheme, which can carry only the on-off keying data format, the proposed scheme encodes the electrical vector signal on either the upper sideband (USB) or the lower sideband (LSB) only and a pure optical subcarrier on the other sideband. Therefore, phase and amplitude information will be preserved after direct detection. A frequency doubling scheme is employed to reduce the cost of RoF systems. Additionally, the relative intensity between USB and LSB can be easily tuned by adjusting the individual power of electrical driving signals to optimize the performance of the optical radio-frequency signals. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted by using a 1.25 Gb/s BPSK signal at a carrier frequency of 20 GHz. After transmission over 50-km single-mode fiber, the receiver sensitivity penalty is less than 0.5 dB.Item type:Item, A Novel Optical Direct-Detection I/Q Up-Conversion with I/Q Imbalance Compensation via Gram-Schmidt Orthogonalization Procedure(2009) ;Jiang, Wen-Jr ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Wong, Er-Zih ;Shih, Po-TsungChen, Jason (Jyehong)We proposed RF detect-detection vector signal generation using optical I/Q up-conversion. The Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure is employed to compensate I/Q imbalance. After transmission over 100-km SMF, penalties of 5-Gb/s QPSK signals can be ignored.Item type:Item, A Novel Passive Optical Network Architecture Supporting Seamless Integration of RoF and OFDMA Signals(2010-03-15) ;Lin, Yu-Min ;Tien, Po-Lung ;Yuang, Maria C. ;Lee, Steven S. W.Chen, Jason (Jyehong)In this letter, we propose a novel passive optical network (PON) architecture supporting radio-over-fiber signals and orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) PON signals. The architecture transports upstream multiple remote antenna's wireless signals using only one upstream wavelength. In addition, the windowed-orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing technique is employed to mitigate interference during the integration process. Experimental results shows that 10-Gb/s OFDMA and three radio-frequency signals at 2.1 GHz are successfully transmitted over 20-km single-mode fiber in a 32-optical-network-unit PON.Item type:Item, A W-Band Photonic Transmitter-Mixer Based on High-Power Near-Ballistic Uni-Traveling-Carrier Photodiode (NBUTC-PD) for 1.25-Gb/s BPSK Data Transmission under Bias Modulation(2009) ;Wu, Y. -S. ;Kuo, F. -M. ;Wang, Shao-Ning ;Chen, Nan-WeiShi, J. -WWe demonstrate W-band photonic transmitters-mixers, which are composed of near-ballistic-uni-traveling-carrier-photodiodes and quasi-Yagi antennas without integrating Si-lens. After seven cascaded add/drop nodes at every 150 km along the transmission, at bit error ratio (BER) equals to 10(-9) and data rate of 10 Gbps, we observed a 2.5 dB power penalty for the passing through channels with 1050 km transmission distance, and 0.3 dB sensitivity penalty variation for the periodic add/drop channels at every 150 km, respectively. Through repeatedly averaging the phase fluctuations of adjacent pulses, a simple analytical model and numerical simulation revealed that the IFWM-induced differential phase fluctuation is suppressed and convergent, even after an ultralong transmission. The influence of averaging the phase fluctuations on the bit error rate is also evaluated by the semianalytical method. The proposed phase noise averager is based on a phase-sensitive amplifier but does not require an extra phase-locking optical pump beam. It can increase the correlation between the phase noises of neighboring bits and greatly reduce the differential phase noise in the transmission system. Independently of the cascaded spans, analytical analysis demonstrates that, in the DPSK system with repeated averagers, the total differential phase noise will be less than that before the first averager. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are carried out and confirm the significant improvement of DPSK signals using the proposed novel phase noise averagers. The values of alpha factor were measured to be between 0.48 and 0.60. Moreover, a photonic RF phase shifter is examined using the QD VCSEL. A phase shifter with a total phase shift of 2 pi was demonstrated. These investigations and demonstrations will be useful in the field of QD VCSEL.Item type:Item, Effects of filter bandwidth and driving voltage on optical duobinary transmission systems(2007-07-01) ;Lu, Yu Chang ;Wei, Chia Chien ;Chen, Jason (Jyehong) ;Feng, Kai MingYeh, Pao ChiThis work demonstrates how electrical driving voltage of a Mach-Zehnder modulator and the bandwidth of electrical low-pass filters (LPFs) affect optical duobinary signals. The fact that a 100% driving voltage does not necessarily yield optimal results in duobinary systems is established both numerically and experimentally. Various filter bandwidths correspond to respective optimum driving voltages. In a 10 Gbps duobinary system, compared with the conventional condition of using a 2.5 GHz electrical LPF, a 2.5 dB sensitivity improvement is obtained by employing a 3 GHz LPF with an 88% driving voltage of fully driving.
