Item type:Item, A novel dispersion-free interleaver for bidirectional DWDM transmission systems(2007-11-01) ;Huang, Ming-Fang ;Chen, Jason Jyehong ;Yu, Jianjun ;Chi, SienChang, Gee-KungWe propose a novel dispersion-free interleaver using optical delay lines by accurately locating the zeros in the transfer function. It has been implemented with the design of interleaver pairs with the same amplitude responses but opposite phase responses for bidirectional dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) transmission systems. The measured results are consistent with device simulation. We have further modified the original three-port design using unidirectional amplification, and a four-port interleaver has been built and demonstrated to achieve bidirectional DWDM transmission. In this paper, we fully studied and verified the applications of our four-port interleavers in bidirectional transmission. We demonstrated a bidirectional strain-line system over 210 km and a recirculating loop transmission over a 500-km standard single-mode fiber using 10-Gb/s ON-OFF keying signals. Furthermore, we also demonstrated return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) and nonreturn-to-zero DPSK modulation formats for more than 230 km of transmission. For comparison, the different amplification functions, such as the erbium-doped fiber amplifier and the semiconductor optical amplifier, have also been probed in this paper. The experimental results have clearly illustrated the desirable functions of this novel bidirectional amplifier in this dispersion-free interleaver.Item type:Item, Artificial Neural-Network-Based Pre-Distortion for High Loss-Budget 60-km Long-Reach Passive Optical Network(2020-01-01) ;Nguyen, Hong-Minh ;Huang, Szu-Chi ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Chuang, Chun-YenChen, Jason JyehongHigh launch optical power can compensate for severe fading and power loss in long-reach passive optical networks (LR-PONs); however, it also aggravates nonlinear degradation, which necessitates the use of complex DSP-based nonlinear compensation techniques at optical network users (ONUs). DSP-related techniques also necessitate the use of additional hardware/software components by the receiver, which can greatly increase implementation costs and energy consumption, particularly when dealing with large-scale ONU deployment. This is the first study to propose artificial neural network (ANN)-based pre-distortion to eliminate the need for complex DSP at ONUs in a high-launch-power LR-PON, thereby permitting the use of a simplified architecture at the user end. In the first phase of the study, the proposed ANN-based pre-distortion scheme was implemented in a single-channel IMDD OFDM LR-PON, which achieved a data rate of >55 Gbps over 60-km transmission with a loss budget of 30 dB without the need for optical inline- or pre-amplification. In the second phase of experiments, the same scheme was applied to a 4-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) OFDM LR-PON. Here, the proposed scheme achieved data rates of >200 Gbps using launch power of 18 dBm per lane, resulting in a loss budget of roughly 29 dB over 60-km single mode fiber transmission.Item type:Item, Photonic vector signal generation at microwave/millimeter-wave bands employing an optical frequency quadrupling scheme(2009-07-15) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Jiang, Wen-Jr ;Wong, Er-ZihChen, Jason JyehongTo the best of our knowledge, a novel photonic architecture to generate vector signals at microwave/millimeter-wave bands employing an optical frequency quadrupling technique based on an external dual-parallel modulator is proposed for the first time. A 312.5 MSym/s quadruple phase-shift keying signal at 25 GHz is experimentally demonstrated using properly precoding driving signal at 6.25 GHz, and optical power penalty is negligible following 50 km single-mode fiber transmission. (C) 2009 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, Simple 14-Gb/s Short-Range Radio-Over-Fiber System Employing a Single-Electrode MZM for 60-GHz Wireless Applications(2010-08-15) ;Jiang, Wen-Jr ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Ng'oma, Anthony ;Shih, Po-TsungChen, Jason JyehongThis paper demonstrates the feasibility of a simple multigigabit-per-second (Gbps) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing multilevel orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal modulation at 60 GHz and a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this paper, the impact of fiber chromatic dispersion and OFDM beat noise on the performance of the RoF system are investigated by theoretical analysis, VPI WDM-TransmissionMaker simulation and experimental demonstration. A 13.875-Gb/s QPSK OFDM signal occupying the full 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz with frequency multiplication for the RoF link is demonstrated. After 3 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission with no dispersion compensation, the power penalty is less than 3 dB.
