Item type:Item, A Pro-performance appraisal system for the university(2010-03-15) ;Chen, Jui-Kuei ;Chen, I-Shuo ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementDue to economic pressures and declining birth rates, universities in Taiwan are seeking ways to evaluate and improve operational performance to acquire a competitive advantage to attract more students. However, current performance evaluation models have been criticized for two reasons. First, the measurement criteria currently used are not completely in accordance with the characteristics of different university types, research-intensive university, teaching-intensive university, and professional-intensive university. Second, the models assume independence of measured criteria. Nonetheless, in the real world, such measured criteria are seldom independent. To address these issues, we first reviewed the literature and interviewed Taiwanese higher education experts to integrate critical measurement criteria and develop an original performance appraisal system (OPAS). Next, we adapted a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method to present complex interdependent relationships and to construct a relation structure among measurement criteria for performance appraisal. A fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) was generated to address the dependence and feedback among each of the measurement criteria, Finally, we proposed a Pro-performance appraisal system (PPAS). This study offers a Pro-performance appraisal system (PPAS) to aid in future performance appraisals and improvements for all three university types. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Therefore, long-term strategies for gaining a competitive advantage are now starting to focus on innovation rather than cost reduction. Although attention to the importance of innovation is rising, there are few studies today that provide airlines with a clear and precise way to successfully conduct innovation operations. The aim of this study is to solve this dilemma by constructing a novel aviatic innovation system (AIS). In this paper, a hybrid fuzzy multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) model based on a fuzzy analytical hierarchical process (FAHP) and a VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) is adopted to complete the construction of the AIS. The value of the AIS is to provide Taiwanese airlines with innovation-oriented techniques for future strategy development. We believe that the AIS can contribute to the survival of Taiwanese airlines in the near future. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. In light of aiming to become a kingdom of innovation, how to regain its competitive advantages over the very short term has become a critical issue requiring immediate attention. Based on previous research indicating that improving innovation is among the primary ways of enhancing an education system's competitive advantages, that creativity is the foundation of innovation, that organizations that truly understand human creativity and are committed to nurturing it and living with the consequences of doing so are those that are most likely to succeed, and that students are a major group to be regarded as the backbone of a nation's future development, the aim of this study is to explore critical criteria for creativity, which could significantly improve the creativity of college students. Although related studies can be found today, these studies seem to ignore the different effects of different dimensions of creativity evaluation, leading to results that are irrational and not completely suitable for real practice. In this regard, a perception of interrelationships among these dimensions is thus taken into account while calculating weights of evaluation creativity dimensions and criteria. In accordance with the result, the top six explored critical creativity criteria are shown to help enhance today's college students' creativity.Item type:Item, How to manage knowledge well? Evidence from the life insurance industry(2010-12-04) ;Chen, I-Shuo ;Chen, Jui-Kuei ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementAs using knowledge management and performance effectively to gain competitive advantage is becoming critical in today's knowledge-based economy, an increasing number of industries are trying to explore optimal methods of managing knowledge-based assets, so-called intellectual capital (IC) in both visible and invisible forms and evaluate their performance in this regard. In Taiwan, the life insurance industry includes two crucial factors: first, it is one of main mechanisms that could significantly influence Taiwanese economic growth; and second, knowledge needed for high performance itself. However, not only is difficulty in professions growing, high flow rate of talent and an increase in, and extension of, diversity services, but the recent global economic depression is a drawback that is seriously damaging competitive advantage domestically and internationally. This phenomenon also obviously affects Taiwanese economic growth. Since the renaissance and auspicious future of Taiwanese life insurance industry might be expected by senior life insurance experts, the aim of this study is on the basis of its development nature, profit generation by effective knowledge management, to overcome the highlighted difficulties by developing the critical criteria of IC and utilizing the developed IC criteria to explore the benchmark company. This is accomplished through a hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach based on a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), the analytic network process (ANP), and VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). Companies in the life insurance industry are encouraged to successfully evaluate and improve knowledge management performance based on the research findings, to bring about radical change in the existing state of affairs and to develop future strategies efficiently and solidly.Item type:Item, Inno-Qual efficiency of higher education: Empirical testing using data envelopment analysis(2011-03-01) ;Chen, Jui-Kuei ;Chen, I-Shuo ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementSince the overall quality of Taiwanese university education has been decreasing in recent years. and universities are losing their competitive advantage while facing foreign countries' education systems and the threat of closing, upgrading innovation performance and improving total quality performance (Inno-Qual performance) so as to enhance overall operational performance have become an urgent issue. Although relative measurement models are increasingly being used for conquering the above-mentioned difficulties, such as the Inno-Qual performance system (IQPS), which integrates the features of innovation and TQM, currently, no studies empirically evaluate the efficiency of such improvement, meaning that the costs of using the Inno-Qual performance system are increasing, particularly the human administrative cost for providing intellectual products, which is the nature of higher education. To overcome this problem, in this study, the IQPS is adopted by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the Inno-Qual efficiency of 99 Taiwanese universities divided into five types (research-intensive, teaching-intensive, profession-intensive, research & teaching-intensive, and education-in-practice-intensive). On the basis of the empirical results, we found that over half (73%) of the universities are highly inefficient in improving the Inno-Qual performance, and thus we conclude that improving the Inno-Qual efficiency based on our results will be helpful for reducing the majority of cost expenditures. Recently, a growing number of organizations have implemented TQM in order to give them a competitive advantage [Chan, T. H., & Quazi, H. A. (2002). Overview of quality management practices in selected Asian countries. Quality Management Journal, 9(1), 172-180; Nilsson, L., Johnson, M. D., & Gustafsson, A. (2001). The impact of quality practices on customer satisfaction and business results: Product versus service organizations. Journal of Quality Management, 6, 5-27]. Meanwhile, quality related awards are also appearing for examining and identifying whether or not the overall quality of a firm is high. Each award, however, focuses only on examining certain items. It is impossible for a firm to make each examined item perfect. In addition to this, since the overall quality of the technology and products of some Taiwanese biotechnology corporations has been decreasing, the prestige of the Taiwanese biotechnology industry as a whole has decreased in the global market. Thus, in order to solve the above difficulties, this study attempts to find the most suitable measurement model for the biotechnology industry to enact quality improvement. The study first reviews a substantial body of literature on total quality management and categorizes measurement criteria. The study then proceeds with in-depth interviews with relevant background experts in order to extract and verify the most suitable measurement criteria. In addition to this, a FANP is utilized in order to analyze the weights of different measurement dimensions and criteria. The value of this study is its construction of a TQM measurement model for the Taiwanese biotechnology industry that can be used to improve its quality as well as to regain a higher market share of the global market. However, these institutes generally rely greatly on academic research to evaluate innovation performance. Nevertheless, the performance of innovation may be affected by numerous factors that are often beyond the scope of a single academic study. Thus, to address this concern, this paper constructs an innovation support system (ISS) for Taiwanese higher education institutes to comprehensively evaluate their innovation performance. Previous research often evaluates performance by independently considering a number of criteria. However, this assumption of independence does not model the so-called "real world"; thus, we present a novel conjunctive multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach that addresses dependent relationships among each measurement criteria. As such, we utilize a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), a fuzzy analytical network process (FANP), and a technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) forming order to develop an innovation support system (ISS) that considers the interdependence and the relative weights of each measurement criterion. Such a trend puts higher education systems under great pressure for two main reasons: first, IC has been shown to be a key driver of innovation; second, the higher education system assumes the unique function of fostering innovation. Knowing how best to improve IC is considered the most significant factor of success in enhancing innovation. However, the higher education system of today has difficulty in measuring IC precisely to improve its innovation performance. This study is to conquer such a problem by establishing critical criteria for IC assessment. Based on the findings, the higher education system is encouraged to successfully evaluate its IC performance and then find ways to improve this performance to achieve better innovation.
