A technique for monitoring the timing alignment between a pulse carver and a phase modulator in return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying systems is proposed. An optical frequency discriminator and a microwave detector centered at a half of the phase modulation data rate are used to monitor the spectrum broadening caused by timing misalignment., The proposed method has a large detection dynamic range and is polarization-independent.

Using in optical networks; a reconfigurable and low-cost 2 x 2 optical cross-connect device based on fiber Bragg gratings and optical limiting amplifiers is investigated and demonstrated. The input dynamic range is over 20 dB for both crossing and passing channels. Small power penalty of 0.6-1.0 dB is found for a two-channel 2.5 Gb/s over a 100-km system demonstration.
