Item type:Item, A Holographic Projection System With an Electrically Adjustable Optical Zoom and a Fixed Location of Zeroth-Order Diffraction(2014-06-01) ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Collings, Neil ;Lin, Hung-Chun ;Lin, Yi-Hsin光電工程學系An electrically tunable optical zooming holographic projection system with a fixed location of zeroth-order diffraction is demonstrated. By using two liquid lenses and an encoded Fresnel lens on a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) panel, the size of the projected image of the holographic projection system is changeable; meanwhile, the locations of both of the zeroth-order diffraction and the first-order diffraction are unchanged. Therefore, the zeroth-order diffraction can be removed by using a fixed optical high-pass filter. We can use it to realize an image size matching system for green light (532 nm) and red light (632.8 nm) without any positional motion of the optical elements. The optical zoom function enhances the feasibility to realize a high-resolution full-color holographic projection system.Item type:Item, A holographic projection system with an electrically tuning and continuously adjustable optical zoom(2012-12-03) ;Lin, Hung-Chun ;Collings, Neil ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Lin, Yi-Hsin光電工程學系A holographic projection system with optical zoom is demonstrated. By using a combination of a LC lens and an encoded Fresnel lens on the LCoS panel, we can control zoom in a holographic projector. The magnification can be electrically adjusted by tuning the focal length of the combination of the two lenses. The zoom ratio of the holographic projection system can reach 3.7:1 with continuous zoom function. The optical zoom function can decrease the complexity of the holographic projection system. T-PNLC consists of three layers. LC directors in the two layers near glass substrates are orthogonal to each other. In the middle layer, LC directors are perpendicular to the glass substrate. The advantages of such T-PNLC include polarizer-free, larger phase shift (similar to 0.4 pi rad) than the residual phase type (< 0.05 pi rad), and low operating voltage (< 30V(rms)). It does not require bias voltage for avoiding scattering because the refractive index of liquid crystals matches that of polymers. The phase shift of T-PNLC is affected by the cell gap and the curing voltages. The potential applications are laser beam steering, spatial light modulators and electrically tunable micro-lens arrays.Item type:Item, A polarization-independent liquid crystal phase modulation using polymer-network liquid crystal with orthogonal alignment layers(2012-01-01) ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Lin, Wei-Chih ;Tsou, Yu-Shih ;Lin, Yi-Hsin光電工程學系A polarization-independent liquid crystal (LC) phase modulation using polymer-network liquid crystals with orthogonal alignments layers (T-PNLC) is demonstrated. T-PNLC consists of three layers. Liquid crystal (LC) directors in the two layers near glass substrates are orthogonal to each other and those two layers modulate two eigen-polarizations of an incident light. As a result, two eigen-polarizations of an incident light experience the same phase shift. In the middle layer, LC directors are perpendicular to the glass substrate and contribute no phase shift. The phase shift of T-PNLC is electrically tunable and polarization-independent. T-PNLC does not require any bias voltage for operation. The phase shift is 0.28 pi rad for the voltage of 30 V-rms. By measuring and analyzing the optical phase shift of T-PNLC at the oblique incidence of transverse magnetic wave, the pretilt angle of LC directors and the effective thickness of three layers are obtained and discussed. The potential applications are spatial light modulators, laser beam steering, and micro-lens arrays. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. The optical mechanism of the electrically-tunable DOF endoscope adopting a two-mode switching LC lens is introduced. The two-mode switching LC lens provides not only a positive lens power but also a negative lens power. Therefore, we could extend the range of DOF originally from 27 mm similar to 55 mm to 12.4 mm similar to 76.4 mm by using the two-mode switching LC lens as an active focusing element. The detail derivations of the optical mechanism of the endoscopic system adopting a LC lens are invistgated. The more detail experimental results are demonstrated. We believe this study can provide a more detail understanding of an endoscopic system adopting a tunable focusing lens.Item type:Item, AN ELECTRICALLY TUNABLE FOCUSING PICO PROJECTION SYSTEM BASED ON A LIQUID CRYSTAL LENS ADOPTING A LIQUID CRYSTAL AND POLYMER COMPOSITE FILM(2011-12-01) ;Lin, Hung-Chun ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsAn electrically tunable liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS)-based pico projection system based on a liquid crystal lens adopting a liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF) is demonstrated. One LC lens in charge of the focus function helps to maintain the formed image at the same position and the other two LC lenses in charge of zoom function assist to continuously form an image at image sensor with tunable magnification of image size. The detail optical mechanism is investigated and the concept is demonstrated experimentally. The magnifications of the images can be switched continuously for the target in a range between 10 cm and 100 cm. The optical zoom ratio of this system maintains a constant similar to 6.5:1 independent of the object distance. The optical mechanism is discussed. The focusing distance and magnification of the image can be controlled separately by focusing lenses and zooming lenses. As a result, the zoom ratio is independent of objective distance and only depends on the tunable range of the lens power of the active-optical elements. Such an image system adopts a liquid lens on an LCPCF and the mechanism is on a basis of droplet movement on LCPCF whose position changes because electrically tunable orientations of LC molecules on the surface of LCPCF. The change of position of the liquid lens compensates the deviation of light as the image system is under a handshake vibration. As a result, the image system under handshake vibrations could keep a clear image. The operating principles are introduced, and the experiments are performed and discussed. The concept in this paper can also be extended to design other optical components for modulating direction of light. Optical image stabilization (OIS) is a technique to reduce such a blurring. The basic principle of OIS is to stabilize the recorded image in a camera by varying the optical path to the sensor under vibrations during exposure. In this paper, we demonstrate optical image stabilization (OIS) for an imaging system using a droplet manipulation on a liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF) that reduces the motion blur. The mechanism is based on manipulation of position of the liquid lens on LCPCF by means of electrically adjusting orientations of liquid crystals. The change of the position of the liquid lens compensates the deviation of light when the image system is under a handshake vibration. Therefore, the imaging system forms a clear image with a droplet on different position to overcome handshake vibration. The concept in this paper can also be extended to design other optical components for modulating the direction of light.Item type:Item, Droplet Manipulation on a Liquid Crystal and Polymer Composite Film(2016-01-01) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsIn this paper, we review the research works about droplet manipulation on liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF). The switchable surface free energy on LCPCF results from the orientations of liquid crystal molecules anchored among the polymer grains of LCPCF. According to the modified Cassie's model and the measurement based on the Chibowski's film pressure model, the surface free energy of LCPCF is electrically switchable from 36 x 10(-3) J/m(2) to 51 x 10(-3) J/m(2). A droplet on LCPCF can be manipulated by a wettability gradient. By the droplet manipulation, we can realize applications such as bistable polarizer-free displays and sperm testers.Item type:Item, Electrically Tunable Liquid Crystal Lenses and Applications(2014-06-13) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Chen, Hung-Shan ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;交大名義發表光電工程學系Electrically tunable liquid crystal (LC) lenses have been studied for over 30years. Three main problems of LC lenses hinder the applications: 1) the paradox between the response time and tunable focusing range, 2) polarization dependency, and 3) large aperture size for ophthalmic lenses. In this paper, we introduce the two mode switching method of the LC lenses to solve the paradox of the LC lenses. The basic optical principles for designing polarization independent LC lenses are discussed and several polarizer-free LC lenses we developed are reviewed. Several applications of LC lenses are also introduced, including auto-focusing imaging systems, auto-focusing projection systems, optical zoom systems, endoscopic systems, solar cells, ophthalmic lenses for myopia-presbyopia.Item type:Item, Electrically Tunable Ophthalmic Lenses for Myopia and Presbyopia Using Liquid Crystals(2014-06-13) ;Chen, Hung-Shan ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;交大名義發表光電工程學系In this paper, an electrically tunable-focusing and polarizer-free liquid crystal (LC) lens for ophthalmic lenses is demonstrated. The optical operating principles of the LC lens in a human eye system are introduced and the optical principle of the polarization independent of the double-layered LC lens is investigated. The polarization dependency, image quality and the response time of the double-layered LC lens are measured. The continuously tunable-focusing properties of the LC lenses are more practical in applications for different visional conditions of people. The concept in this paper can also be extensively applied to imaging systems, and projection systems, such as cameras in cell phones, pico projectors, and endoscopes.Item type:Item, Electrically-tunable liquid crystal lenses and applications(2013-01-01) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Chen, Hung-Shan ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsIn this paper, the electrically-tunable liquid crystal (LC) lenses and the applications are reviewed. We introduce the basic mechanism of LC phase modulation first. LC lenses are categorized based on different operating principles: 1) Gradient Index (GRIN) LC lenses with a homogeneous cell gap, 2) non-GRIN LC lenses with an inhomogeneous cell gap, 3) diffractive LC lenses, and 4) LC lenses controlled by polarizations. To remove the polarization independency, we also summarize polarization independent LC phase modulations. Many promising applications based on LC lenses are also summarized, such as imaging system, pico projectors, optical zoom systems, ophthalmic applications, and solar systems.Item type:Item, Electrically-tunable optical zoom system by using liquid crystal lenses(2012) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Chen, Ming-Syuan ;Lin, Hung-Chun ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsAn electrically-tunable optical zoom system using liquid crystal (LC) lenses is demonstrated. The mechanism of the optical zoom system is to use two lenses and a camera system to achieve focusing and zooming function. In this paper, we analyzed the imaging conditions and the magnification of the optical zoom system. The relation between the focusing properties of LC lenses and zoom ratio of the optical zoom system is also discussed. The electrically-tunable optical zoom system using two LC lenses has high zoom ratio (similar to 7.9: 1 to similar to 5.5:1), short system length (<10 cm) and the object can be zoomed in or zoomed out continuously at the objective distance of infinity to 10 cm. The potential applications are cell phones, cameras, telescopes and pico projectors.
