Item type:Item, ASIC implementation of a programmable servo control IC with digital phase-locked loop(2002) ;Cheng, KY ;Wang, CY ;Tzou, YY ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThis paper presents a new application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) realization of a programmable servo control IC for high-performance BLDC spindle motors. The advantage of ASIC technology is that the design is specific to the application and can be optimized by designers. In order to achieve precise speed regulation without high-resolution encoder feedback, a digital phase-locked loop is implemented in the proposed servo control IC. Furthermore, by incorporating the proposed servo control IC with a general-purpose microprocessor or digital signal processor (DSP), a simple, yet high performance solution can be achieved. Simulation and experimental results indicate that precise speed regulation of BLDC motors can be achieved with the proposed servo control IC.Item type:Item, Design of a sensorless commutation IC for BLDC motors(2002) ;Cheng, KY ;Lin, YT ;Tso, CH ;Tzou, YY電控工程研究所This paper presents the design methodology to implement a sensorless commutation IC for brushless dc (BLDC) motors by using mixed-mode IC design technology. The developed IC can generate optimal commutation signals for BLDC motors without Hall-effect sensors and can be easily interfaced with a microcontroller or a digital signal processor (DSP) to complete the closed-loop control system. Furthermore, this IC solution requires less analog compensation circuits than other commercial motor control ICs, therefore, high maintainability and accurate control can be achieved. The proposed sensorless commutation IC is integrated in a standard digital single-poly, and four metal 0.35-mum CMOS process.Item type:Item, Design of a sensorless commutation IC for BLDC motors(2003-11-01) ;Cheng, KY ;Tzou, YY ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThis paper presents the design and realization of a sensorless commutation integrated circuit (IC) for brushless de motors (BLDCMs) by using mixed-mode IC design methodology. The developed IC can generate accurate commutation signals for BLDCMs by using a modified back-EMF sensing scheme instead of using Hall-effect sensors. This IC can be also easily interfaced with a microcontroller or a digital signal processor (DSP) to complete the closed-loop control of a BLDCM. The developed sensorless; commutation IC consists of an analog back-EMF processing circuit and a programmable digital commutation control circuit. Since the commutation control is very critical for BLDCM control, the proposed sensorless commutation IC provides a phase compensation circuit to compensate phase error due to low-pass filtering, noise, and nonideal effects of back-EMFs. By using mixed-mode IC design methodology, this IC solution requires less analog compensation circuits compared to other commercially available motor control ICs. Therefore, high maintainability and flexibility can be both achieved. The proposed sensorless commutation IC is integrated in a standard 0.35-mum single-poly four-metal CMOS process, and the realization technique of this mixed-mode IC has been given. The proposed control scheme and developed realization techniques provide illustrative engineering procedures for the system-on-a-chip solution for advanced digital motor control. Simulation and experimental results have been carried out in verification of the proposed control scheme.Item type:Item, Fuzzy optimization techniques applied to the design of a digital BLDC servo drive(2002) ;Cheng, KY ;Tzou, YY ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThis paper presents a novel design approach by applying fuzzy optimization techniques to design a digital brushless dc servo drive. The system specifications and design variables are firstly specified. The servo responses are then fed back to evaluate the overall system performances, which are expressed as cost functions with respect to the design variables. According to the cost functions and specifications, each design variable can be properly tuned toward the optimal value by using the proposed fuzzy optimization techniques. Besides, once the optimum design is achieved, the proposed fuzzy optimization strategy can perform as an intelligent controller for on-line gain adaptation with different loading conditions. Simulation and experimental results indicate that the servo control parameters can be optimized to achieve minimum cost under large uncertain load variations.Item type:Item, Fuzzy optimization techniques applied to the design of a digital PMSM servo drive(2004-07-01) ;Cheng, KY ;Tzou, YY ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThis paper presents a novel design approach by applying gradient optimization with fuzzy step-sizing techniques to the design of a digital permanent magnet synchronous motor (PNSM) servo drive. The servo specifications and design variables are specified and analyzed to formulate a controller optimization problem. The servo responses are then fed back to evaluate the overall system performances, which can be expressed as objective functions with respect to the servo control parameters. According to the objective functions and design specifications, the servo control parameters can be properly tuned toward their optimal values by using the proposed optimization techniques. In order to improve the convergent rate of the optimization process, a fuzzy-logic based step-size tuning strategy is presented. Because of the nonlinear property of the digital servo drives, the tuned servo control parameters may be only optimal for a particular operating point, therefore, once the optimum design is achieved, the proposed fuzzy optimizing controller can perform as an intelligent tuner for on-line gain adaptation under different loading conditions. The proposed fuzzy optimization servo tuner has been realized under a PC-MATLAB-based environment with an on-line controlled digital PMSM servo drive. Simulation and experimental results indicate that the control parameters of a digital PMSM servo drive can be optimized for its dynamic responses under various load conditions.Item type:Item, On-line auto-tuning of a DSP-controlled BLDC servo drive(2001) ;Cheng, KY ;Lin, SY ;Tzou, YY ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThis paper presents the development of an auto-tuning servo system using MATLAB for the on-line adaptive tuning of a DSP-controlled BLDC servo drive. A practical auto-tuning scheme employing minimizing a defined cost function of the process under control has been proposed and realized. Using the developed autotuning scheme, the control parameters can be tuned to reach an optimal performance with large parameter uncertainties and load disturbances. The proposed auto-tuning algorithm has been realized using MATLAB and an on-line DSP-controlled BLDC servo drive. Experimental results show the proposed auto-tuning servo drive can achieve good performances with unknown motor parameters.
