Item type:Item, 12 GHz passive harmonic mode-locking in a 1.06 mu m semiconductor optical amplifier-based fiber laser with figure-eight cavity configuration(2013-03-15) ;Chen, Hou-Ren ;Lin, Kuei-Huei ;Tsai, Chih-Ya ;Wu, Hsiao-HuaWu, Chih-HsuanWe report the generation of passively harmonic mode-locked pulses using a 1.06 mu m semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in a figure-eight laser configuration operated in the all-normal-dispersion regime. Different orders of harmonic mode-locking can be obtained from 30 MHz to 12.02 GHz by changing the injection current of the SOA from 80 to 660 mA together with the adjustment of polarization controllers. The highest pulse repetition rate increases almost linearly with the SOA current. As SOA current is set to 660 mA, we obtain the intracavity power of 46 mW at the highest repetition rate of 12.02 GHz, corresponding to the 1202th harmonic of the fundamental mode-locking frequency. To our best knowledge, this is the lowest intracavity power to generate the highest repetition rate with a passively mode-locked laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime. Even though the typical modulation bandwidth of a WRC-FPLD is only similar to 1.25 GHz, using spectrally-efficient 32-QAM OFDM or SC-FDE modulation, 20-Gbps uplink signals can achieve the FEC limit after 25-km dispersion-uncompensated single-mode fiber transmission. Because of the advantage of lower PAPR, the SC-FDE signals outperform the OFDM signals with the fixed 32-QAM format in the proposed system; moreover, SC-FDE scheme can be another promising candidate for uplinks in WDM-PONs, for its simplification to ONUs. The signal at the mode of 1560.7 nm shows similar quality with the signal at the modes of 1545.3 nm and 1574.7 nm, the WRC-FPLD, accordingly, has wide injection wavelength range from at least 1545.3 nm to 1574.7 nm. With the mode spacing of 0.55 nm, consequently, we have demonstrated the applicability of the colorless WRC-FPLD on supporting up to 36 channels in the WDM-PON. The 3-dB analog modulation bandwidth of the TO-38-can packaged GaN blue LD biased at 65 mA and controlled at 25 degrees C is only 900 MHz, which can be extended to 1.5 GHz for OFDM encoding after throughput intensity optimization. When delivering the 4-Gbps 16-QAM OFDM data within 1-GHz bandwidth, the error vector magnitude (EVM), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit-error-rate (BER) of the received data are observed as 8.4%, 22.4 dB and 3.5 x 10(-8), respectively. By increasing the encoded bandwidth to 1.5 GHz, the TO-38-can packaged GaN blue LD enlarges its transmission capacity to 6 Gbps but degrades its transmitted BER to 1.7 x 10(-3). The same transmission capacity of 6 Gbps can also be achieved with a BER of 1 x 10(-6) by encoding 64-QAM OFDM data within 1-GHz bandwidth. Using the 1.5-GHz full bandwidth of the TO-38-can packaged GaN blue LD provides the 64-QAM OFDM transmission up to 9 Gbps, which successfully delivers data with an EVM of 5.1%, an SNR of 22 dB and a BER of 3.6 x 10(-3) passed the forward error correction (FEC) criterion. (C) 2015 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, 60-GHz Millimeter-wave Over Fiber with Directly Modulated Dual-mode Laser Diode(2016-06-14) ;Tsai, Cheng-Ting ;Lin, Chi-Hsiang ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Chi, Yu-ChiehLin, Gong-RuA directly modulated dual-mode laser diode (DMLD) with third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) suppression is proposed for a 60-GHz millimeter-wave over fiber (MMWoF) architecture, enabling new fiber-wireless communication access to cover 4-km single-mode-fiber (SMF) and 3-m wireless 16-QAM OFDM transmissions. By dual-mode injection-locking, the throughput degradation of the DMLD is mitigated with saturation effect to reduce its threshold, IMD3 power and relative intensity noise to 7.7 mA, -85 dBm and -110.4 dBc/Hz, respectively, providing huge spurious-free dynamic range of 85.8 dB/Hz(2/3). This operation suppresses the noise floor of the DMLD carried QPSK-OFDM spectrum by 5 dB. The optical receiving power is optimized to restrict the power fading effect for improving the bit error rate to 1.9 x 10(-3) and the receiving power penalty to 1.1 dB. Such DMLD based hybrid architecture for 60-GHz MMW fiber-wireless access can directly cover the current optical and wireless networks for next-generation indoor and short-reach mobile communications.Item type:Item, 850/940-nm VCSEL for optical communication and 3D sensing(2018-01-01) ;Cheng, Chih-Hsien ;Shen, Chih-Chiang ;Kao, Hsuan-Yun ;Hsieh, Dan-HuaWang, Huai-YungThis paper is going to review the state-of-the-art of the high-speed 850/940-nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), discussing the structural design, mode control and the related data transmission performance. InGaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) was used to increase the differential gain and photon density in VCSEL. The multiple oxide layers and oxide-confined aperture were well designed in VCSEL to decrease the parasitic capacitance and generate single mode (SM) VCSEL. The maximal modulation bandwidth of 30 GHz was achieved with well-designed VCSEL structure. At the end of the paper, other applications of the near-infrared VCSELs are discussed.Item type:Item, A pulsated weak-resonant-cavity laser diode with transient wavelength scanning and tracking for injection-locked RZ transmission(2012-06-18) ;Lin, Gong-Ru ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Liao, Yu-Sheng ;Kuo, Hao-ChungLiao, Zhi-WangBy spectrally slicing a single longitudinal-mode from a master weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diode with transient wavelength scanning and tracking functions, the broadened self-injection-locking of a slave weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diode is demonstrated to achieve bi-directional transmission in a 200-GHz array-waveguide-grating channelized dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network system. Both the down-and up-stream slave weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diodes are non-return-to-zero modulated below threshold and coherently injection-locked to deliver the pulsed carrier for 25-km bidirectional 2.5 Gbits/s return-to-zero transmission. The master weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diode is gain-switched at near threshold condition and delivers an optical coherent pulse-train with its mode linewidth broadened from 0.2 to 0.8 nm by transient wavelength scanning, which facilitates the broadband injection-locking of the slave weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diodes with a threshold current reducing by 10 mA. Such a transient wavelength scanning induced spectral broadening greatly releases the limitation on wavelength injection-locking range required for the slave weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diode. The theoretical modeling and numerical simulation on the wavelength scanning and tracking effects of the master and slave weak-resonant-cavity Fabry-Perot laser diodes are performed. The receiving power sensitivity for back-to-back transmission at bit-error-rate <10(-10) is -25.6 dBm, and the power penalty added after 25-km transmission is less than 2 dB for all 16 channels. The electrical-pulse modulation induced gain switching of the VCSEL is initiated under external optical NRZ data injection that increases the relaxation oscillation frequency of the homemade VCSEL from 2.2 to 7.4 GHz, thereby enabling its electrical modulation bandwidth up to 10 GHz. The external NRZ injection reduces the lasing threshold and enlarges the modulation depth of the VCSEL so that the converted RZ data pulsewidth can be shortened to 27 ps with a slightly increased peak-to-peak negative frequency chirp of 4.3 GHz (corresponding to a chirp parameter of 122 MHz/ps). The chirp and bit error rate (BER) display strong correlations with the injection power and the biased current of the VCSEL. With external injection, the receiving power required for achieving a BER below 10(-9) at 10 Gbit/s is -19.5 dBm, and a power penalty of 16 dB is observed when the dc bias of the electrical-pulse modulated VCSEL is decreased by only 10% from the threshold condition.Item type:Item, Bit-Error-Rate and Chirp analyses of a Gain-Switching VCSEL based All-Optical NRZ-to-RZ Converter(2008) ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Lin, Chia-Chi ;Kuo, Hao-Chung ;Peng, Peng-ChunLin, Gong-RuSingle-wavelength gain-switching VCSEL based all-optical converter is demonstrated to generate RZ data with 2.5Gbit/s bit-error-rate of 10(-9) at receiving power of -29 dBm and reduced frequency chirp of 178 MHz/ps at input optical NRZ power of -21dBm.Item type:Item, Blue Laser Diode Based Free-space Optical Data Transmission elevated to 18 Gbps over 16 m(2017-09-05) ;Huang, Yu-Fang ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Kao, Hsuan-Yun ;Tsai, Chen-TingWang, Huai-YungUp to 18-Gbps direct encoding of blue laser diode (BLD) is demonstrated for free-space data transmission. By reshaping the orthogonal frequency multiplexed (16-QAM OFDM) stream with sidelobe filtering, the raw data rate expedites from 17.2 to 18.4 Gbps. Employing an ultrafast p-i-n photodiode with smaller active area diameter and lower noise equivalent power significantly enlarges the data rate by 1.6 Gbps or upgrades the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 0.2 dB. Replacing the 80-mW BLD with the 120-mW one essentially increases the received SNR by 0.4 dB under enhanced modulation throughput. Reinforcing the beam collimation and collection by increasing the numerical aperture with a plano-convex hyper-hemispherical lens further improves the SNR by 0.6 dB. After optimization, the 16-QAM OFDM data with and without sidelobe filtering are respectively delivered at raw data rates of 16.4 and 18 Gbps with spectral-density usage efficiency as high as 4 bit/s/Hz over 16 m in free space, wherein the BLD carried QAM-OFDM data stream remains its capacity after reformation with sidelobe filtering as the superior inter-carrier-interference immunity reinforces.Item type:Item, Catalytically solid-phase self-organization of nanoporous SnS with optical depolarizability(2016) ;Cheng, Chih-Hsien ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Wu, Chung-Lun ;Lin, Chun-JungTsai, Ling-HsuanThe catalytic solid-phase synthesis of self-organized nanoporous tin sulfide (SnS) with enhanced absorption, manipulative transmittance and depolarization features is demonstrated. Using an ultralow radio-frequency (RF) sputtering power, the variation of the orientation angle between the anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane and the axis of the sputtered ion beam detunes the catalytically synthesized SnS from nanorod to nanoporous morphology, along the sidewall of the AAO membrane. The ultraslow catalytic sputtering synthesis on the AAO at the RF plasma power of 20 W and the orientation angle of 0 degrees regulates the porosity and integrality of nanoporous SnS, with average pore diameter of 80-150 nm. When transferring from planar to nanoporous structure, the phase composition changes from SnS to SnS2-Sn2S3, and the optical bandgap shrinks from 1.43 to 1.16 eV, due to the preferred crystalline orientation, which also contributes to an ultralow reflectance of <1% at 200-500 nm when both the transmittance and the surface scattering remain at their maxima. The absorption coefficient is enhanced by nearly one order of magnitude with its minimum of >5 x 10(4) cm(-1) at the wavelength between 200 and 700 nm, due to the red-shifting of the absorption spectrum to at least 100 nm. The catalytically self-organized nanoporous SnS causes strong haze and beam divergence of 20 degrees-30 degrees by depolarized nonlinear scattering at the surface, which favors the solar energy conversion with reduced surface reflection and enhanced photon scattering under preserved transmittance.Item type:Item, Coherently wavelength injection-locking a 600-mu m long cavity colorless laser diode for 16-QAM OFDM at 12 Gbit/s over 25-km SMF(2013-07-15) ;Li, Yi-Cheng ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Cheng, Min-Chi ;Lu, I-ChengChen, JasonThe coherent injection-locking and directly modulation of a long-cavity colorless laser diode with 1% end-facet reflectance and weak-resonant longitudinal modes is employed as an universal optical transmitter to demonstrated for optical 16-QAM OFDM transmission at 12 Gbit/s over 25 km in a DWDM-PON system. The optimized bias current of 30 mA (similar to 1.5Ith) with corresponding extinction ratio (ER) of 6 dB and the external injection power of -9 dBm is (are) required for such a wavelength-locked universal transmitter to carry the 16-QAM and 122-subcarrier formatted OFDM and data-stream. By increasing external injection-locking from. 9 dBm to 0 dBm, the peak-to-peak chirp of the OFDM data stream reduces from 7.7 to 5.4 GHz. The side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of up to 50 dB is achieved with wider detuning range between -0.5 nm to 2.0 nm under an injection power of 0 dBm. By modulating such a colorless laser diode with an OFDM data stream of 122 subcarriers at a central carrier frequency of 1.5625 GHz and a total bandwidth of 3 GHz, the transmission data rate of up to 12 Gbit/s in standard single-mode fiber over 25 km is demonstrated to achieve an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 5.435%. Such a universal colorless DWDM-PON transmitter can deliver the optical OFDM data-stream at 12 Gbit/s QAM-OFDM data after 25-km transmission with a receiving power sensitivity of -7 dBm at BER of 3.6x10(-7) when pre-amplifying the OFDM data by 5 dB. (C) 2013 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, Comparison of single-/few-/multi-mode 850 nm VCSELs for optical OFDM transmission(2017-07-10) ;Kao, Hsuan-Yun ;Tsai, Cheng-Ting ;Leong, Shan-Fong ;Peng, Chun-YenChi, Yu-ChiehFor high-speed optical OFDM transmission applications, a comprehensive comparison of the homemade multi-/few-/single-transverse mode (MM/FM/SM) vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) chips is performed. With microwave probe, the direct encoding of pre-leveled 16-QAM OFDM data and transmission over 100-m-long OM4 multi-mode-fiber (MMF) are demonstrated for intra-datacenter applications. The MM VCSEL chip with the largest emission aperture of 11 mu m reveals the highest differential quantum efficiency which provides the highest optical power of 8.67 mW but exhibits the lowest encodable bandwidth of 21 GHz. In contrast, the SM VCSEL chip fabricated with the smallest emission aperture of only 3 mu m provides the highest 3-dB encoding bandwidth up to 23 GHz at a cost of slight heat accumulation. After optimization, with the trade-off set between the receiving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bandwidth, the FM VCSEL chip guarantees the highest optical OFDM transmission bit rate of 96 Gbit/s under back-to-back case with its strongest throughput. Among three VCSEL chips, the SM VCSEL chip with nearly modal-dispersion free feature is treated as the best candidate for carrying the pre-leveled 16-QAM OFDM data over 100-m OM4-MMF with same material structure but exhibits different oxide-layer confined gain cross-sections with one another at 80-Gbit/s with the smallest receiving power penalty of 1.77 dB. (C) 2017 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, CWDM DFBLD Transmitter Module for 10-km Interdata Center With Single-Channel 50-Gbit/s PAM-4 and 62-Gbit/s QAM-OFDM(2018-02-01) ;Kao, Hsuan-Yun ;Su, Zhe-Xian ;Shih, Hsiang-Shun ;Chi, Yu-ChiehTsai, Cheng-TingSingle-channel 50-Gbit/s 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) and 62-Gbit/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexed quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM-OFDM) direct encoding of an uncooled coarse wavelength division multiplexer (CWDM) 100-Gbit/s distributed feedback laser diodes (DF-BLD) transmitter module at 1310-nm transmitter interdata center transmission over 10-km single-mode fiber (SMF) are demonstrated. To enable preleveled 16-QAM OFDM and PAM-4 data transmissions at 62 and 50 Gbit/s, the 1310-nm channel of the DFBLD CWDM transmitter provides modulation bandwidth of 15 GHz, side-mode suppression ratio of 48 dB, and relative intensity noise of -126 dBc/Hz. For encoding the PAM-4 data, the 1310nm channel of the CWDM DFBLD 100-Gbit/s transmitter achieves transmission capacities of 58 and 50 Gbit/s after BtB and 10-km SMF transmissions, respectively. Instead of supporting the back-to-back 16-QAM OFDM with the transmission at 62 Gbit/s with forward error correction (FEC) certified BER of 3.3x10(-3), such a CWDM 100-Gbit/s DFBLD transmitter module can still maintain its highest data rate capacity to indicate a receiving power penalty of 0.35 dB even after 10-km SMF propagation. This is mainly attributed to the selected channel wavelength of the narrow-linewidth DFBLD, which suffers from extremely low chromatic dispersion and RF fading effect.Item type:Item, Efficient Heat Dissipation of Uncooled 400-Gbps (16x25-Gbps) Optical Transceiver Employing Multimode VCSEL and PD Arrays(2017-04-18) ;Shih, Tien-Tsorng ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Wang, Ruei-Nian ;Wu, Chao-HsinHuang, Jian-JangAn effective heat dissipation of uncooled 400-Gbps (16x25-Gbps) form-factor pluggable (CDFP) optical transceiver module employing chip-on-board multimode 25-Gbps vertical-surface-emitting-laser (VCSEL) and 25-Gbps photodiode (PD) arrays mounted on a brass metal core embedded within a printed circuit board (PCB) is proposed and demonstrated. This new scheme of the hollow PCB filling with thermally-dissipated brass metal core was simulated and used for high temperature and long term stability operation of the proposed 400-Gbps CDFP transceiver. During one-hour testing, a red-shift of central wavelength by 0.4-nm corresponding temperature increment of 6.7 degrees C was observed with the brass core assisted cooler module. Such a temperature change was significantly lower than that of 28.3 degrees C for the optical transceiver driven with conventional circuit board. After 100-m distance transmission over a multimode fiber (OM4), the 400-Gbps CDFP transceiver exhibited dispersion penalty of 2.6-dB, power budget of >= 3-dB, link loss of <= 0.63-dB, mask margin of 20%, and bit error rate (BER) of <10(-12) with maintained stability more than one hour. The developed 400-Gbps CDFP transceiver module employing low-power consumption VCSEL and PD arrays, effective coupling lens arrays, and well thermal-dissipation brass metal core is suitable for use in the low-cost and high-performance data center applications.Item type:Item, Few-Mode 850-nm VCSEL Chip with Direct 16-QAM OFDM Encoding at 80-Gbit/s for 100-m OM4 MMF Link(2017-01-01) ;Kao, Hsuan-Yun ;Tsai, Cheng-Ting ;Pong, Chun-Yen ;Liang, Shan-FongWeng, Zu-KaiChip-level direct 16-QAM OFDM encoding of a few-transverse-mode 850-nm Zn-diffused VCSEL is employed to transmit 80-Gbit/s data covering 20-GHz analog bandwidth over 100-m-long OM4 MMF with corresponding BER of 3.3x10(-3).Item type:Item, Few-mode VCSEL chip for 100-Gb/s transmission over 100 m multimode fiber(2017-10-01) ;Kao, Hsuan-Yun ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Tsai, Cheng-Ting ;Leong, Shan-FongPeng, Chun-YenA few-mode (FM) vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) chip with heavily zinc-diffused contact layer and oxide-confined cross-section is demonstrated for carrying pre-leveled 16-quadrature amplitude modulation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (QAM-OFDM) data in OM4 multi-mode fiber (MMF) over 100 m for intra-data-center applications. The FM VCSEL chip, which has an oxide-confined emission aperture of 5 mu m, demonstrates high external quantum efficiency, provides an optical power of 2.2 mW at 38 times threshold condition, and exhibits 3 dB direct-modulation bandwidth beyond 22 GHz at a cost of slight heat accumulation. At a DC bias point of 5 mA (22.6I(th)) the FM VCSEL chip, with sufficiently normalized modulation output, supports Baud and data rates of 25 and 100 Gb/s, respectively, with forward error correction (FEC) certifying receiving quality after back-to-back transmission. After passing through 100 m OM4 MMF with a receiving power penalty of 4 dB, the FM VCSEL chip demonstrates FEC-certified transmission of the pre-leveled 16-QAM OFDM data at 92 Gb/s.
