Item type:Item, A solution-processable bipolar molecular glass as a host material for white electrophosphorescent devices(2008) ;Chien, Chen-Han ;Kung, Liang-Rern ;Wu, Chen-Hao ;Shu, Ching-FongChang, Sheng-YuanA solution-processable bipolar material tBu-OXDTFA comprising an electron-rich triphenylamine core and electron-deficient oxadiazole/ fluorene peripheries was synthesized. This dendrimer-like molecule not only possesses a high triplet energy (2.74 eV) but also exhibits excellent film-forming properties upon solution processing. We achieved highly efficient white electrophosphorescent OLEDs (22.3 cd A(-1), 11.6%) through solution processing, wherein the single white emitting layer was readily formed after spin-coating a solution of blue- and red-phosphor co-dopants containing tBu-OXDTFA as the host matrix.Item type:Item, Color tuning associated with heteroleptic cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes: influence of the ancillary ligand(2007) ;Chang, Chau-Jiun ;Yang, Cheng-Han ;Chen, Kellen ;Chi, YunShu, Ching-FongWe report the preparation of a series of new heteroleptic Ir(III) metal complexes chelated by two cyclometalated 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl) pyrazole ligands (dfpz)H and a third ancillary bidentate ligand ( L. X). Such an intricate design lies in a core concept that the cyclometalated dfpz ligands always warrant a greater pi pi* gap in these series of iridium complexes. Accordingly, the lowest one-electron excitation would accommodate the pi* orbital of the ancillary L(boolean AND)X ligands, the functionalization of which is then exploited to fine-tune the phosphorescent emission wavelengths. Amongst the L. X ligands designed, three classes (series 1-3) can be categorized, and remarkable bathochromic shifts of phosphorescence were observed by (i) replacing the 2-benzoxazol-2-yl-substituent (1a) with the 2-benzothiazol-2-yl group (1b) in the phenolate complexes, (ii) converting the pyridyl group (2a) to the pyrazolyl group (2b) and even to the isoquinolyl group (2c) in the pyrazolate complexes and (iii) extending the pi-conjugation of the benzimidazolate ligand from 3a to 3b. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction study on complex [(dfpz)Ir(bzpz)] (2b) was conducted to confirm their general molecular architectures. Complex 2b was also used as a representative example for fabrication of multilayered, green-emitting phosphorescent OLEDs using the direct thermal evaporation technique.Item type:Item, Efficient red electrophosphorescence from a fluorene-based bipolar host material(2009-08-01) ;Chien, Chen-Han ;Hsu, Fang-Ming ;Shu, Ching-Fong ;Chi, Yun應用化學系We have prepared efficient red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) incorporating 2,7-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-9-[4-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl]-9-phenylfluorene (POAPF) as the host material doped with the osmium phosphor Os(fptz)(2)(PPh(2)Me)(2) (fPtZ = 3-trifluoromethyl-5-pyridyl-1,2,4-triazole). POAPF, which possesses bipolar functionalities, can facilitate both hole- and electron-injection from the charge transport layers to provide a balanced charge flux within the emission layer. The peak electroluminescence performance of the device reached as high as 19.9% and 34.5 lm/W - the highest values reported to date for a red phosphorescent OLED. In addition, we fabricated a POAPF-based white light OLED - containing red-[doped with OS(fPtZ)(2)(PPh(2)Me)(2)] and blue-emitting [doped with iridium(III) bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato-N,C(2')] picolinate, Firpic} layers - that also exhibited satisfactory efficiencies (18.4% and 43.9 lm/W). Employing these copolymers, a highly efficient red polymer light-emitting diode has been realised that has an external quantum efficiency of 18.0%, a maximum brightness of 38000 cd m(-2), and an emission centered at 618 nm. In addition, after incorporating appropriate amounts of green-emitting benzothiadiazole (BT) and the aforementioned Os(bpftz) into the bipolar PF, an efficient white-light electroluminescent polymer is obtained that displays simultaneous blue, green, and red emissions.Item type:Item, General application of blade coating to small-molecule hosts for organic light-emitting diode(2014-10-01) ;Chang, Hao-Wen ;Lee, Yi-Ting ;Tseng, Mei-Rurng ;Jang, Meng-HaoYeh, Han-ChengBlade coating is applied to multi-layer phosphorescent OLED with five small-molecule hosts for the emission layer, including bis[3,5-di (9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl]diphenylsilane (SimCP2), 2,6-bis(3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl) pyridine (26DCzPPy), 4,4\',4 \'\'-tris-(N-carbazolyl)-triphenylamine (TCTA), 9,9-bis[4-(3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazol-9-yl)phenyl]fluorene (TBCPF), and 2,7-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-9,9\'-spirobi[fluorene] (SPPO13). In general, blade coating gives low surface roughness around 0.2 nm without phase separation of the emitter and the host. In the large area of 2 cm by 3 cm the film thickness distribution is within 10% and uniform light-emission is achieved. 1,3-Bis[2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazo-5-yl]benzene (OXD-7) is added to tune the electron transport. Among all the hosts, 26DCzPPy and SimCP2 have by far the best electron hole balance and consequently show the highest efficiency. For SimCP2, the maximal efficiency is 15.8 cd/A for blue and 24.2 cd/A for white emission. The order of efficiencies for the hosts is found to be quite different from the order in vacuum evaporation for the same device structures. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. A maximum forward viewing luminous efficiency of 36.1 cd A(-1) and a power efficiency of 23.4 lm W(-1) were achieved, values comparable to those reported I-or the state-of-the-art vacuum deposited small-molecule OWLEDs.Item type:Item, Highly efficient red organic light-emitting devices based on a fluorene-triphenylamine host doped with an Os(II) phosphor(2008-06-09) ;Wu, Chen-Hao ;Shih, Ping-I ;Shu, Ching-Fong ;Chi, Yun應用化學系We report highly efficient red-light-emitting devices based on a fluorene-triphenylamine tris[4-(9-phenylfluoren-9-yl)phenyl]amine (TFTPA) host doped with an osmium phosphor. The sterically hindered fluorene peripheries provided a compatible environment for the osmium dopant and alleviated concentration quenching of the phosphor at high doping levels. Increasing the doping concentration from 7 to 21 wt % dramatically decreased the driving voltage of the TFTPA-based devices, leading to improved power efficiency. The 21 wt % Os-doped device exhibited maximum luminous and powder efficiencies of 29.9 cd/A and 25.2 lm/W, combined with high efficiencies at high brightness. At 1000 cd/m(2) the efficiencies remained 29.2 cd/A and 22.2 lm/W. A polymer light-emitting device based on this BT-containing copolymer exhibited very bright green emission having Commission Internationale d'E'nclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates (0.32, 0.61); the maximum brightness was 10232 cd m(-2) and the maximum luminance efficiency was 8.9 cd A(-1). In addition, a highly efficient three-band white-light-emitting diode was prepared using PF-TPA-OXD as a blue-light-emitting host doped with this green-light-emitting FTO-BT5 copolymer and a red-light-emitting Os phosphor Os(fppz). Without co-doping any other electron-and/or hole-transporting molecules, this white-light-emitting device reached a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.1% (8.3 cd A(-1)) at a luminance of 402 cd m(-2) and a current density of 4.8 mA cm(-2). When the luminance increased from 26 cd m(-2) (0.36, 0.32) to 5258 cd m(-2) (0.33, 0.31), the corresponding CIE chromaticity coordinates remain almost unaltered and very close to the emission of pure white light; the value of eta(ext) remained above 3% in this high-luminance region.Item type:Item, Interface and thickness tuning for blade coated small-molecule organic light-emitting diodes with high power efficiency(2013-09-28) ;Chang, Yu-Fan ;Chiu, Yu-Chian ;Chang, Hao-Wen ;Wang, Yi-SiangShih, Yi-LunWe developed a general method based on fluorescence microscopy to characterize the interface dissolution in multi-layer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by blade coating. A sharp bi-layer edge was created before blade coating, with the bottom layer being insoluble and top layer soluble. After blade coating, fluorescence images showed that the edge of the top layer shifted when the layer dissolved completely, whereas the bottom layer's edge remained in place as a positioning mark. The dissolution depth was determined to be 15-20 nm when the emissive-layer host of 2,6-bis (3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl) phenyl) pyridine (26DCzPPy) was coated on the hole-transport layer of N, N'-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)-N, N'-bis(phenyl)-benzidine(NPB), which was consistent with a sudden drop in efficiency of orange OLEDs with layer thickness below 20 nm. Thus, the layer thickness of OLEDs was optimized to stay more than 20 nm for blade coating. For a two-color white OLED with the structure TCTA/26DCzPPy:PO-01-TB:FIrpic/TPBI, efficiency was 24 cd/A and 8.5 lm/W at 1000 cd/m(2). For a three-color white OLED with Os(fptz)(2)(dhpm) added as the emitter, the efficiency was 12.3 cd/A and 3.7 lm/W at 1000 cd/m(2). For a green device with the structure TCTA/26DCzPPy: Ir(mppy)(3)/TPBI, the efficiency was 41.9 cd/A and 23.4 lm/W at 1000 cd/m(2). A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of 1 revealed a distorted octahedral Ru(II) framework, showing strong N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonding between the fpbpymH ligand and Cl anions. In the presence of Na(2)CO(3), the methylene linkers of chelates in 1 underwent stepwise oxygenation, forming the charge-neutral complexes [Ru(fpbpym)(fpbpyk)] (2) and [Ru(fpbpyk)(2)] (3) [fpbpykH = [5-(trifluoromethyl)pyrazol-3-yl](2,2'-bipydd-6-yl) ketone] in sequence. The respective charge-neutral Os(II) complex [Os(fpbpyk)(2)] (4) was also isolated by the treatment of OsCl(3)center dot 3H(2)O with 2 equiv of the terdentate chelate fpbpymH, Electrochemical analysis indicated that the introduction of the electron-withdrawing ketone group in 2-4 increased the metal-based oxidation potential in sequence. For the photophysical properties, complexes 1-4 are essentially nonluminescent in solution (e.g., CH(2)Cl(2) or MeOH) at room temperature, but all exhibit 600-1100 nm phosphorescence with moderate intensity for the powdery, solid sample at room temperature. The trend in terms of the emission peak wave ength of 1 (666 nm) < 3 (795 nm) < 2 (810 nm) < 4 (994 nm) among titled complexes is in agreement with the corresponding onset of absorption spectra as well as the time-dependent density functional theory calculation of 1 < 3 < 2 < 4.Item type:Item, Novel host material for highly efficient blue phosphorescent OLEDs(2007) ;Shih, Ping-I ;Chien, Chen-Han ;Chuang, Chu-Ying ;Shu, Ching-FongYang, Cheng-HanWe report the synthesis and characterization of a novel silane - fluorene hybrid, triphenyl-(4-(9-phenyl- 9H-fluoren-9-yl) phenyl) silane (TPSi-F), used as the host material for blue phosphorescent devices. TPSi-F is constructed by linking p-substituted tetraphenylsilane to the fluorene framework through a non-conjugated, sp(3)-hybridized carbon atom (C- 9) to enhance thermal and morphological stabilities, while maintaining the much needed higher singlet and triplet energy gap. Highly efficient sky-blue phosphorescent OLEDs were obtained when employing TPSi-F as the host and iridium(III) bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl) pyridinato-N,C-2'] (FIrpic) as the guest. The maximum external quantum efficiency (max. E. Q. E.) of this device reached as high as 15% (30.6 cd A(-1)). Furthermore, upon switching the guest from FIrpic to a new blue phosphor FIrfpy, better blue-emitting OLEDs were produced with a max. E. Q. E. of 9.4% (15.1 cd A(-1)). These TPSi-F based blue phosphorescent devices show a 2-fold enhancement in device efficiency compared with reference devices based on the conventional host material 1,3-bis(9-carbazolyl) benzene (mCP).Item type:Item, Orange and red organic light-emitting devices employing neutral Ru(II) emitters: Rational design and prospects for color tuning(2006-08-04) ;Tung, Yung-Liang ;Chen, Li-Shiuan ;Chi, Yun ;Chou, Pi-TaiCheng, Yi-MingA new series of charge-neutral Ru(II) pyridyl and isoquinoline pyrazolate complexes, [Ru(bppz)(2)(PPh2Me)(2)] (bbpz: 3-tert-butyl-5-pyridyl pyrazolate) (1), [Ru(fppz)(2)(PPh2Me)(2)] (fppz: 3-trifluoromethyl-5-pyridyl pyrazolate) (2), [Ru(ibpz)(2)(PPhMe2)(2)] (ibpz: 3-tert-butyl-5-(1-isoquinolyl) pyrazolate) (3), [Ru(ibpz)(2)(PPh2Me)(2)] (4), [Ru(ifpz)(2)(PPh2Me)(2)] (ifpz: 3-trifluoromethyl-5-(1-isoquinolyl) pyrazolate) (5), [Ru(ibpz)(2)(dpp=)] (dpp= represents cis-1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethene) (6), and [Ru(ifpz)(2)(dpp=)] (7), have been synthesized, and their structural, electrochemical, and photophysical properties have been characterized. A comprehensive time-dependant density functional theory (TDDFT) approach has been used to assign the observed electronic transitions to specific frontier orbital configurations. A multilayer organic light-emitting device (OLED) using 24 wt % of 5 as the dopant emitter in a 4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazolyl-1,1'-biphenyl (CBP) host with 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]biphenyl (NPB) as the hole-transport layer exhibits saturated red emission with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.10%, luminous efficiency of 5.74 cd A(-1), and power efficiency of 2.62 lm W-1. The incorporation of a thin layer of poly(styrene sulfonate)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) between indium tin oxide (ITO) and NPB gave anoptimized device with an EQE of 7.03%, luminous efficiency of 8.02 cd A(-1), and power efficiency of 2.74 lm W-1 at 20 mA cm(-2). These values represent a breakthrough in the field of OLEDs using less expensive Ru(II) metal complexes. The nonionic nature of the complexes as well as their high emission quantum efficiencies and short radiative lifetimes are believed to be the key factors enabling this unprecedented achievement. The prospects for color tuning based on Ru(II) complexes are also discussed in light of some theoretical calculations.Item type:Item, Performance Characterization of Dye-Sensitized Photovoltaics under Indoor Lighting(2017-04-20) ;Chen, Chia-Yuan ;Jian, Zih-Hong ;Huang, Shih-Han ;Lee, Kun-MuKao, Ming-HsuanIndoor utilization of emerging photovoltaics is promising; however, efficiency characterization under room lighting is challenging. We report the first round-robin interlaboratory study of performance measurement for dye-sensitized photovoltaics (cells and mini-modules) and one silicon solar cell under a fluorescent dim light. Among 15 research groups, the relative deviation in power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the samples reaches an unprecedented 152%. On the basis of the comprehensive results, the gap between photometry and radiometry measurements and the response of devices to the dim illumination are identified as critical obstacles to the correct PCE. Therefore, we use an illuminometer as a prime standard with a spectroradiometer to quantify the intensity of indoor lighting and adopt the reverse-biased current voltage (I-V) characteristics as an indicator to qualify the I-V sampling time for dye-sensitized photovoltaics. The recommendations can brighten the prospects of emerging photovoltaics for indoor applications.Item type:Item, Performance improvement of white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes by using composite host structure to enhance the carrier injection(2010) ;Juang, Fuh-Shyang ;Hong, Lin-Ann ;Chen, Cheng-Yin ;Wang, Shun-HsiTsai, Yu-ShengDevice characteristics of phosphorescent OLEDs with composite host structure were investigated by co-doping hole and electron transport-type hosts in emitting layer. The improved of charge injection and the confined of triplet excitons within recombination zone were achieved. White-OLED shows the efficiencies of 34.5 cd/A and 24 lm/W at 1000 cd/m(2).Item type:Item, Polyfluorene presenting dipolar pendent groups and its application to electroluminescent devices(2007-06-01) ;Chien, Chen-Han ;Shih, Ping-I ;Wu, Fang-Iy ;Shu, Ching-FongChi, YunWe have synthesized a blue-light-emitting polyfluorene derivative (PF-TPAOXD) that presents sterically hindered, dipolar pendent groups functionalized at the C-9 positions of alternating fluorene units. The incorporation of the dipolar side chains, each comprising an electron-rich triphenylamine group and an electron-deficient oxadiazole group connected through a pi-conjugated bridge, endows the resultant polymer with higher highest occupied molecular orbital and lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels, which, consequently, lead to an increase in both hole and electron affinities. An electroluminescent device incorporating this polymer as the emitting layer exhibited a stable blue emission with a maximum brightness of 2080 cd/ m(2) at 12 V and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.4% at a brightness of 137 cd/m(2). Furthermore, atomic force microscopy measurements indicated that the dipolar nature of PF-TPAOXD, in contrast to the general nonpolarity of polydialkylfluorenes, provided a stabilizing environment allowing the polar organometallic triplet dopant to be dispersed homogeneously. We also fabricated an electrophosphorescent device incorporating PF-TPAOXD as the host material doped with a red-emitting osmium complex to realize red electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage color coordinates of (0.66, 0.34). The resulting device exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency of 7.3% at a brightness of 1747 cd/m(2) and a maximum brightness of 7244 cd/ m(2). A hole transport-type host (TCTA) is inserted between the hole transport layer (TAPC) and the emitting layer (EML), constituting a buffer layer between them with the aim of improving charge carrier balance. Furthermore, in this study, we also utilize the interface between double light-emitting layers of devices by codoping them with a red phosphorescent dopant [Os(bpftz)(2)(PPh(2)Me)(2)]. An Os complex with a high-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level (trapping holes) is codoped at the interface between emitting layers and an exciton-formation zone is expanded to obtain a white PHOLED with high efficiency. From the results, the optimal structure of the white device exhibits a yield of 35 cd A(-1), a power efficiency of 22 lm W(-1), and CIE coordinates of (0.33; 0.38) at a luminance of 1000 cdm(-2). Furthermore, the power efficiency can be improved to 30 lm W(-1) by attaching the outcoupling enhancement film. In this work, we numerically modelled binary, ternary, and quaternary doping single EML W-OLEDs. The correlated colour temperature (CCT), colour-rendering index (CRI), and spectral designs were correlated. The simulation predicted that the quaternary doping system possesses the best chromaticity performance. The corresponding binary, ternary and quaternary doping single EML W-OLEDs were fabricated and characterised to verify the calculation. The solution-processed quaternary doping W-OLEDs were designed with CRI values up to 85, deviations from the Planckian locus (D-u'v') as low as +0.0009, an EQE of 13.7%, a power efficacy of 14.7 lm/W and current efficiency of up to 24.9 cd/A at 1000 cd/m(2).
