This method features fast detection, high reliability, fault location, and actual routing information. The supervising of 4 x 4 switch fabric with a detecting time of less than 300 ns was achieved. It is also verified experimentally that the degradation of the system performance caused by this supervising approach is negligible.Item type:Item, A tunable and single-frequency S-band erbium fiber laser with saturable-absorber-based autotracking filter(2005-06-01) ;Chien, HC ;Yeh, CH ;Lee, CC ;Chi, S光電工程學系A method to achieve wavelength tunability and single-longitudinal-mode oscillation in an S-band erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser is proposed and demonstrated. A saturable-absorber-based autotracking filter consisting of an unpumped EDF and an optical reflector is utilized to provide fine mode restriction and guarantee the single-frequency operation. The performance of output power of larger than 1 dBm, power stability of smaller than 0.02 dB, wavelength variation of less than 0.01 nm and side-mode suppression ratio of larger than 31 dB has been experimentally demonstrated for this single-frequency fiber laser operating from 1482 to 1512 nm. Placing the presented all-optical 2R regenerator after a 50-km fiber significantly improves the transmission performance of a signal over 50- and 100-km fiber links. The power penalties at BER = 10(-9) are similar to those of the two-mode injection-locked scheme.Item type:Item, An all-optical 2R regenerator using a compact self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode incorporated in a bidirectional EDFA(2006-05-01) ;Chien, HC ;Lee, CC ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsAn all-optical 2R regenerator, based on a compact self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode with a 10-mm-long embedded fiber Bragg grating cavity, and a bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to execute all-optical 211 regeneration at 10 Gb/s. Compared with the conventional 111 regeneration, the proposed scheme has achieved significant 6.4-dB improvement of power penalty at bit-error ratio = 10(-9) in the transmission experiment over 100-km standard single-mode fiber.Item type:Item, An automatic gearshift logic for discrete bicycle transmissions(2003) ;Chien, HC ;Tseng, CH ;機械工程學系Department of Mechanical EngineeringConsidering the characteristics of a discrete transmission on bicycles, this study proposes an automatic gearshift logic for discrete bicycle transmissions. This logic calculates shifting occasions of a transmission for the individual. Shifting gears at these shifting occasions can keep the individual pedaling in the suitable cadence region, namely satisfy his/her ergonomic necessity.Item type:Item, An automatic transmission for bicycles: a simulation(2004-02-01) ;Chien, HC ;Tseng, CH ;機械工程學系Department of Mechanical EngineeringA new design of an automatic transmission for bicycles was simulated. A sensitivity analysis found most environmental and bicycle variables had little effect but cycling velocity was very important while pedal rpm and gradient of the ground had some effect. The new design transmission therefore emphasizes velocity, pedal rpm and gradient of the ground when selecting the optimum gear ratios. Since the comfortable pedal rpm differs from cyclist to cyclist, this new automatic transmission continuously measures the pedal rpm and calculates an average to efficiently learn the cycling habit of different cyclists.Item type:Item, An effective statistical approach for comparative risk assessment(1996-06-01) ;Ding, CG ;Woo, YY ;Sheu, HJ ;Chien, HCShen, SFComparative risk assessment is an evaluation process designed to rank environmental problems based on the severity of potential hazards. The purpose of this paper is to provide an effective statistical approach to analyze perceived environmental risks. Environmental problems, evaluative criteria, and other potential moderator variables need to be determined first, and then the risk perception data collected. Repeated measures analysis is used to first test for interactions between environmental problems and potential moderator variables. If there are no significant interactions, then the risk difference among environmental problems is tested unconditionally; otherwise the risk difference is tested conditionally. Cluster analysis for environmental problems is performed only when the risk difference is significant. The clustering results can be objectively determined by using the simultaneous T-confidence intervals. Risk-based priority setting is made according to the clusters obtained. To illustrate this approach, an empirical study of comparative socioeconomic risks in Taiwan was conducted. Socioeconomic impacts areas including social security, quality of life, production cost, investment willingness, and economic resources are used as evaluative criteria. Results indicate that selected impact areas do affect relative risk differences among 24 environmental problems, and the difference is significant for each area. Therefore, cluster analysis is conducted separately for each impact area. Risk-based priority settings for clusters of environmental problems are reported.Item type:Item, EDFA-free all-optical 2R regeneration using a compact self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode(2006-05-01) ;Chien, HC ;Lee, CC ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThis study presents an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-free all-optical 2R (reamplification and reshaping) regeneration scheme based on a compact self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode. The proposed 2R regenerator achieves a straight line transmission at 10 Gb/s over 76 Ion without either the EDFA or the external probe laser, both of which are traditionally required. Additionally, device characteristics such as data-rate transparency, input dynamic range, amplified gain, and 2R regeneration performance are investigated experimentally.Item type:Item, Gain-clamping erbium-doped waveguide amplifier module using optical feedback technique(2005-02-01) ;Yeh, CH ;Chien, HC ;Lee, CC ;Chi, S光電工程學系A forward optical feedback technique for gain-clamping erbium-doped waveguide amplifier has been proposed and experimentally investigated. Three different saturated tones are selected in this proposed structure over the operation range from 1530 to 1550 nm to realize the amplification behaviors. Therefore, a dynamic range of input signal power from -9 to -40 dBm at 1552 nm is obtained when different power level and lasing position of the saturated tone are applied. In addition, the gain clamping performance has also been investigated experimentally under different operation conditions such as the lasing wavelength, the cavity loss and the input signal wavelength.
