Item type:Item, An Investigation of the Optical Analysis in White Light-Emitting Diodes With Conformal and Remote Phosphor Structure(2013-11-01) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Lin, Chien-Chung ;Wang, Chao-HsunYeh, Chia-ChiAn effective emission model of phosphor film is proposed by using bidirectional scattering distribution function system (BSDF), and the model is verified by white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with conformal and remote phosphor structure. The emission model is built to clarify the optical characteristics by analyzing the angular-dependent distribution of emission and excitation behaviors in phosphor film. The white LEDs with conformal and remote phosphor structure are also fabricated for experimental comparison. The uniformity of angular correlated color temperature (CCT) in white LEDs can be determined by the angular distribution of blue and yellow light, which is in turns decided by the refractive index variation between chip a (c) nd phosphor layers. Finally, the experimental results are found to have good agreement with the simulation results performing by the Monte Carlo method.Item type:Item, Enhanced Luminous Efficiency of WLEDs Using a Dual-Layer Structure of the Remote Phosphor Package(2013-06-15) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Shih, Min-Hsiung ;Wang, Chao-HsunTsai, Hsin-HanThis study demonstrates how the insertion of a thin silicone layer into a dual-layer remote phosphor structure enhances light extraction in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In the experiment, a dual-layer phosphor structure yielded a higher intensity of blue and yellow components than a conventional structure. Moreover, the lumen flux was 5% higher than a conventional remote phosphor package at the same correlated color temperature (CCT). Using a TFCalc32 simulation, the electric field intensity was calculated for different thicknesses of the dual-layer remote phosphor structures, and the enhanced use of blue rays was verified. Additionally, the dual-layer structure reduces chromaticity deviations as the driving current increases.Item type:Item, Enhancement of angular CCT by hybrid phosphor structure in White Light-emitting Diodes(2013) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Shih, Min-Hsiung ;Wang, Chao HsunChien, Shih-HsuanThe hybrid phosphor structure for white light-emitting diodes application was reported. It was demonstrated that the improvement of the luminous efficiency as well as the good uniform angular correlated color temperature (CCT) in hybrid phosphor structure compared with the conventional dispense method. The experimental results showed the CCT deviation was improved from 453K to 280K in the range of -70 to 70 degrees, which could be attributed to the large divergent angle of blue light. Moreover, the high lumen output was also achieved, as compared with dispense and conformal phosphor structures. Therefore, the experimental results indicated that the hybrid phosphor structure was feasible to use in the solid state lighting.Item type:Item, High thermal stability of correlated color temperature using current compensation in hybrid warm white high-voltage LEDs(2013-03-11) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Kuo, Hsuan-Ting ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Shih, Min-HsiungWang, Chao-HsunThis study experimentally and numerically examines the correlated color temperature (CCT) stability issue for hybrid warm white high-voltage light-emitting diodes (HV-LEDs) by using a current compensation method. This method could efficiently maintain the CCT stability factor at approximately 1.0 and yield greater color uniformity with Delta u'v' values ranging from 0.017 to 0.003 in CIE 1976 chromaticity coordinates. The simulation results show that the red chip intensity drop is the primary cause of CCT instability in the hybrid warm white system when the temperature increases. Therefore, Furthermore, results indicate that the relative lumen drop improves from 21% to 15% by using a current compensation method. Moreover, pixelated RGB arrays, 2-in. wafer-scale white light emission, and an integrated small footprint white light device were demonstrated. The experimental results showed that the intensity of red, blue, and green (RGB) emissions exhibited considerable enhancement because of the high reflectivity in the UV region by the DBR structure, which subsequently increased the use in the UV optical pumping of RGB QDs. In this experiment, a pulsed spray coating method was crucial in providing uniform RGB layers, and the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film was used as the interface layer between each RGB color to avoid cross-contamination and self-assembly of QDs. Furthermore, the chromaticity coordinates of QDLEDs with the DBR structure remained constant under various pumping powers in the large area sample, whereas a larger shift toward high color temperatures was observed in the integrated device. The resulting color gamut of the proposed QDLEDs covered an area 1.2 times larger than that of the NTSC standard, which is favorable for the next generation of high-quality display technology.Item type:Item, Improvement in uniformity of emission by ZrO2 nano-particles for white LEDs(2012-07-05) ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Lin, Chien-Chung ;Wang, Chao-HsunHan, Hau-VeiThe high luminous efficiency and superior uniformity of angular-dependent correlated color temperature (CCT) white light-emitting diodes have been investigated by ZrO2 nano-particles in a remote phosphor structure. By adding ZrO2 nano-particles with silicone onto the surface of the phosphor layer, the capability of light scattering could be enhanced. In particular, the intensity of blue light at large angles was increased and the CCT deviations could be reduced. Besides, the luminous flux was improved due to the ZrO2 nano-particles with silicone providing a suitable refractive index between air and phosphor layers. This novel structure reduces angular-dependent CCT deviations from 1000 to 420 K in the range of -70 degrees to 70 degrees. Moreover, the enhancement of lumen flux was increased by 2.25% at a driving current 120 mA, compared to a conventional remote phosphor structure without ZrO2 nano-particles. Consequently, the ZrO2 nano-particles in a remote phosphor structure could not only improve the uniformity of lighting but also increase the light output.Item type:Item, Improvement of emission uniformity by using micro-cone patterned PDMS film(2014-02-24) ;Liu, Che-Yu ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Lin, Da-Wei ;Lee, Chia-YuLin, Chien-ChungMicro-patterned PDMS film was fabricated and combined with LED chip on board (COB) package to improve the emission uniformity of LED chip. The micro scale patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) was used as a mold to fabricate micro-cone patterned PDMS (MC-PDMS) film. A strong scattering effect from this MC-PDMS film can be verified by the high haze ratio and the Bi-directional Transmission effect. The angle dependent color temperature measurement system was used to measure the Delta CCT of COB with and without MC-PDMS. The measurement results indicate that the Delta CCT was reduced from 1025K to 428K. This improvement can effectively eliminate the yellow ring effect of LED chip. This technology can be thus considered as a cost-effective way for the next generation of light source packages. The hybrid phosphor structure produces more efficient luminosity and more uniform angular correlated color temperature (CCT) than the conventional dispensing method. The experimental results show that the CCT deviation improved from 453 to 280 K between -70 degrees and 70 degrees. This was likely caused by the large blue light divergent angle. The lumen output produced was higher than that produced by dispense and conformal phosphor structures. Therefore, the results show that the hybrid phosphor structure can be used in solid-state lighting.Item type:Item, Resonant-Enhanced Full-Color Emission of Quantum-Dot-Based Display Technology Using a Pulsed Spray Method(2012-12-19) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Tsai, Kai-An ;Lin, Chien-ChungTsai, Hsin-HanColloidal quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QDLEDs) with the HfO2/SiO2-distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) structure are fabricated using a pulsed spray coating method. BZC and TAP act as acceptors and thiophene-vinylene-thiophene (TVT) acts as donors. Alkylated thiophene is the linker between acceptor and donor. This is the first time that tetraazapyrene was incorporated into conjugated polymers. The films of BZCTVT and TAPTVT showed maximum absorption wavelength at 522 and 534 nm, respectively. From cyclic voltammertry measurement, TAPTVT and BZCTVT exhibited low LUMO (-3.61 and -3.47 eV) and HOMO (-5.64 and -5.63 eV) energy levels. Even though BZC and TAP were planar structures, BZCTVT and TAPTVT showed large dihedral angles between alkylated thiophene and TVT (10.8-22.6 degrees), and between alkylated thiophene and BZC and TAP (22.2-30.3 degrees) based on their simulated energy-minimized geometry. The bottom-gate, top-contact OFETs based on TAPTVT and BZCTVT exhibited only p-channel behavior with hole mobility of 4.63 x 10(-4) and 1.04 x 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and current on/off ratios greater than 10(4) after thermal annealing. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) patterns suggested that thin films of TAPTVT and BZCTVT preferred edge-on orientation.Item type:Item, White light emitting diodes with enhanced CCT uniformity and luminous flux using ZrO2 nanoparticles(2014) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Han, Hau-Vei ;Chen, Hsin-Chu ;Lin, Chien-ChungChien, Shih-HsuanTo enhance the uniformity of correlated color temperature (CCT) and luminous flux, we integrated ZrO2 nanoparticles into white light-emitting diodes. This novel packaging scheme led to a more than 12% increase in luminous flux as compared to that in conventional dispensing structures. This was attributed to the scattering effect of ZrO2 nanoparticles, which enhanced the utilization of blue light. Moreover, the CCT deviation was reduced from 522 to 7 K in a range of -70 to +70 degrees, and essentially eliminated the yellow ring phenomenon. The haze measurement indicated strong scattering across the visible spectrum in the presence of ZrO2 in the silicone layer, and this finding also substantiates our claim. In addition, the chromaticity coordinate shift was steady in the ZrO2 dispensing package structure as the drive current increased, which is crucial for indoor lighting. Combined with its low cost, easy fabrication, and superior optical characteristics, ZrO2 nanoparticles can be an effective performance enhancer for the future generation of white light-emitting devices.Item type:Item, Wide-Range Correlated Color Temperature Light Generation From Resonant Cavity Hybrid Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes(2015-07-01) ;Chen, Kuo-Ju ;Lin, Chien-Chung ;Han, Hau-Vei ;Lee, Chia-YuChien, Shih-HsuanThis study presents extremely uniform colloidal quantum dot white light-emitting diodes (QD-WLEDs) that demonstrate a high color rendering index (CRI) and correlated color temperatures (CCTs) ranging from 2500 to 4500 K. Experimental results indicate that the structure of the distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) containing a stopband in the UV region enhances the intensity output of both monochromatic QD-LEDs and QD-WLEDs by reflecting the unconverted UV light back onto the package to excite the QDs further. Furthermore, the angular CCT uniformity of the QD-WLEDs also improved considerably because of the dependence of the DBR structure on the incident angle. The angular CCT deviation in the range of -70 degrees to 70 degrees decreased to 39 K and the CRI of the WLED is higher than 90. The high-CRI and uniform angular CCT QD-WLED containing the DBR demonstrates potential applicability as the lighting source of next-generation display devices and solid-state lighting.
