Item type:Item, Stacked Silicon Nanowires with Improved Field Enhancement Factor(2010-02-01) ;Tzeng, Yu-Fen ;Wu, Hung-Chi ;Sheng, Pei-Sun ;Tai, Nyan-HwaChiu, Hsin TienThis work describes newly structured stacked silicon nanowires (s-SiNWs), consisting of nanosized silicon wires on top of silicon microrods (SiMRs) and exhibiting pronouncedly superior electron held emission (EFE) characteristics to the conventional SiNWs, by using a two-step electroless metal deposition process. Experimental results indicate that for these s-SiNWs, the electrostatic "screen effect" is markedly suppressed and the held enhancement factor (beta-value) is significantly increased ((beta)(s-SiNWs) = 2533). Additionally, the turn-on held (Eo) for triggering the EFE process is reduced to a level comparable with that of carbon nanotubes, viz. (E(0))(s-SiNWs) = 2.0 V/mu m. This simple and robust modified electroless metal deposition approach does not require either a high temperature or an expensive photolithographic process and possesses great potential for applications.Item type:Item, Synthesis of zirconium dioxide nanotubes, nanowires, and nanocables by concentration dependent solution deposition(2008-05-01) ;Tsai, Min Chiao ;Lin, Geng Te ;Chiu, Hsin Tien ;Lee, Chi Young應用化學系Nanowires and nanotubes of ZrO(2) were successfully synthesized in this study by concentration dependent solution deposition (CDSD) using Zr[O(CH(2))(3)CH(3)](4) as the precursor and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) as the substrate. Here, we synthesized one-dimensional zirconium dioxide with a simple and efficient method by sucking the precursor solution though the AAO channels. In these experiments, the key factor in the formation of nanowires and nanotubes is the concentration of the precursor, Zr[O(CH(2))(3)CH(3)](4) butanol solution. Concentrated Zr[O(CH(2))(3)CH(3)](4) solutions cause the formation of solid one-dimensional materials, whereas dilute precursor solutions form hollow nanotubes. The dimensions of the nanomaterials synthesized correspond to the scope of the AAO template are 200-450 nm in diameter and about 60 mu m in length. Furthermore, the cable structures of these nanomaterials, wire-in-tube and tube-in-tube, were synthesized by alternately operating the processes. We are reporting an uncomplicated, fast and versatile method applicable to a wide range of materials, taking advantage of the sol-gel process to prepare a vast variety of nanocomposite full of potential applications, especially cable nanomaterials.Item type:Item, Tailor made Mie scattering color filters made by size-tunable titanium dioxide particles(2008-02-21) ;Tsai, Min Chiao ;Tsai, Tsung Lin ;Lin, Cheng Te ;Chung, Rei JeiSheu, Hwo ShuennParticles with sizes ranging from nanoscale to microscale were synthesized by the reaction of titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) with acetic, butyric, valeric, or octanoic acids. When acetic acid was used, anatase nanoparticles with diameters of approximately 15 nm were obtained while the other carboxylic acids yielded amorphous submicron-sized spheres. Moreover it is possible to adjust the particle size of the powders since it is proportional to the length of the alkyl group on the carboxylic acids used. When submicron-sized particles were coated on a transparent substrate (quartz or glass), different wavelengths of light were scattered. Thus color filters with specific wavelengths could easily be made by coating powders synthesized from specific carboxylic acids on the transparent substrate.
