Item type:Item, Dielectric-Band Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Lasers(2013-01-01) ;Lee, Po-Tsung ;Lu, Tsan-Wen ;Chiu, Li-Hsun ;交大名義發表光電工程學系We investigate a mode gap confined dielectric band laser via a 1-D photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam (NB) nanocavity with lattice gradually shifted PhC mirror. Owing to different modal symmetries, different zeroth-order dielectric mode properties, including quality (Q) factors, mode volumes, lasing thresholds, and slope efficiencies, in nanocavities with two different cavity sizes are investigated. In experiments, single-mode lasing from dielectric bands with low effective lasing thresholds is obtained. Rising of the high-order modes is also observed when we increase the PhC mirror periods for high Q factor of the zeroth-order dielectric mode. In addition, we observe the bonding and antibonding modes in beamwidth mismatched coupled NB nanocavities and switch the dominant lasing mode via spatially nonuniform carrier injection.Item type:Item, One-dimensional photonic crystal nanobeam lasers on a flexible substrate(2011-08-15) ;Lu, Tsan-Wen ;Chiu, Li-Hsun ;Lin, Pin-Tso ;Lee, Po-Tsung光電工程學系We demonstrate a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity laser composed of hybrid PhC mirrors on a suspended nanobeam (NB) with very small device footprint of 8.5 x 0.57 mu m(2). The 0th-order mode lasing action with low threshold of 280 mu W is observed. Via the optical glue stamping process, the devices are directly transferred onto a flexible polypropylene substrate. Single mode lasing action with effective threshold of 17 mu W is achieved. The robust lasing properties of the device with different bending radii R from infinity to 2.5 mm are obtained. Via finite-element method, we also theoretically address that the lasing wavelength is almost invariant when R> 1.0 mm. This flexible 1D PhC NB laser will be a good candidate for efficient nanolaser in future flexible photonic integrated circuits with ultrahigh component density. In numerical simulations, three surface modes in this microcavity are investigated and optimized by tuning the slab-edge termination tau and gradual mirror layer. High simulated quality (Q) factor of 2.3 x 10(5) and small mode volume of 0.105 mu m(3) are obtained from microcavity with tau = 0.80. In experiments, we obtain and identify different surface modes lasing. The surface mode in the second photonic band gap shows a very-low threshold of 140 mu W and high Q factor of 5,500, which could be an avenue to low-threshold optical lasers and highly sensitive sensor applications with efficient light-matter interactions. c 2010 Optical Society of America
