Item type:Item, Fabrication and nonlinear optical properties of nanoparticle silver oxide films(2003-08-01) ;Chiu, Y ;Rambabu, U ;Hsu, MH ;Shieh, HPDChen, CYWe report the fabrication of nanoparticle silver oxide thin films by rf magnetron sputtering and characterization of their nonlinear optical properties. The chemical decomposition and reversibility of AgOx compounds were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and x-ray diffraction. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis measurements revealed a 0.5 eV negative binding energy shift from AgO to Ag2O phase. The effect of particle plasmon resonance was confirmed by the absorption band shift with increased Ag2O Particle size. The measured third-order nonlinear susceptibility (chi(3) = 3.4 x 10(-7) esu) and response time (27 ps) of the Ag2O nanoparticles makes it promising for applications in all-optical switching devices and optical data storage systems. Moreover, a Si-micromachined near-field module integrated with a fiber lens, solid immersion lens (SIL), and submicron aperture was fabricated to improve the mechanical fragility and increase the NA of the optical-fiber-based pickup. The preliminary configuration design and measurement suggest the feasibility of the module as a submicron heat source for high-density optical data storage.Item type:Item, High-extinction-ratio micro polarizing beam splitter for short wavelength optical storage applications(2005-12-12) ;Lee, CH ;Chiu, Y ;Shieh, HPD ;電控工程研究所光電工程學系A surface-micromachined high-extinction-ratio polarizing beam splitter (PBS) using low absorptive silicon nitride layers for blue wavelength applications are demonstrated. The micro polarizing beam splitter consists of novel stack of two silicon nitride layers separated by an air gap. A PBS optimization model is established to achieve both high extinction-ratio and adequate process margin. The polarization extinction ratios of 25 dB for the reflected light and 15 dB for the transmitted light were experimentally achieved lambda=405 nm. The fabrication of the PBS is compatible with other micro diffractive elements to build a micro optical bench, thus, feasible for short wavelength optical storage applications. Thermal magnetic recording schemes, such as those used in magneto-optical recording, help alleviate the problems with the superparamagnetic limit. Recently, a hybrid recording system was proposed where data were recorded thermal magnetically on a magneto-optical disk and read back with a GMR head. In this paper, we propose an integrated planar head that combines an optical fiber lens, a solid immersion lens, a sub wavelength aperture, a micro coil, an air bearing surface, and a GMR head for such a hybrid recording system. Preliminary fabrication and calculation are discussed.Item type:Item, MEMS-based miniature optical pickup(2005-02-01) ;Chiu, Y ;Chen, CH ;Chiou, JC ;Fang, WLShieh, HPDThe technology challenges for miniature optical pickups include high-numerical-aperture objective lens design, servo actuator functions and performance, and component assembly tolerance. In this paper, a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based miniature optical pickup is proposed for DVD and blue disk systems. A high-order diffractive objective lens with a continuous surface relief is designed. Focus, tilt, and tracking servos are implanted with MEMS micro actuators. Preliminary design and test results are presented.Item type:Item, Micro polarizing beam splitter for blue wavelength optical pickups application(2005) ;Lee, CH ;Tsai, WL ;Chiu, Y ;Shieh, HPD電控工程研究所Item type:Item, Microlens array fabricated by excimer laser micromachining with gray-tone photolithography(2003-03-01) ;Tien, CH ;Chien, YE ;Chiu, Y ;Shieh, HPD光電工程學系We demonstrate the fabrication of a refractive microlens array by using 249nm excimer laser micromachining with coded gray-tone mask photolithography. With pre-corrections to the nonlinear exposure process, the maximum deviation from the designed shape was below 5%. The fabricated hemispherical lens of 30 mum radius was used as a solid immersion lens (SIL) and combined with a 0.54 numerical aperture (NA) objective to achieve a 0.87 effective NA through the knife-edge scanning test. The. experimental results agreed with those of the simulation. Unlike the methods such as the thermal melting process, this one-step optical exposure method with a coded mask provides a relatively fast and cost-effective way to realize a microlens array in optical data storage, information processing, and optical interconnection applications.Item type:Item, Multidirectional asymmetrical microlens-array light control plastic films for high performance reflective liquid crystal displays(2002) ;Shieh, HPD ;Chiu, Y ;Huang, YP ;Ko, FJ光電工程學系Multidirectional asymmetrical microlens array light control films were developed to enhance image quality of reflective LCDs. Significant gain in both brightness and contrast ratio has been demonstrated without visible surface diffusion, Moire patterns and parallax.Item type:Item, Thermal writing by long working distance Fiberlenses for Optical Recording Applications(2002) ;Tien, CH ;Milster, TD ;Chiu, Y ;Shieh, HPD光電工程學系
