Item type:Item, Experimental evaluation of compressive behavior of orthotropic steel plates for the new San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge(2006-03-01) ;Chou, C. C. ;Uang, C. M. ;Seible, F. ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringCompression tests were conducted on two reduced-scale orthotropic plates to verify the design strength of steel box girders for the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The first specimen was composed of three longitudinal closed ribs and a top deck plate. It failed in global buckling, followed by local buckling in the deck plate and ribs. The second specimen, which was composed of four longitudinal T-shaped ribs and a bottom deck plate, experienced global buckling as well as local buckling in the ribs and the deck plate. The ultimate strength and failure mode of both specimens were evaluated by two bridge design specifications: the 1998 AASHTO load and resistance factor design specification and the 2002 Japanese JRA specification. Findings from code comparisons showed that: (1) Sufficient flexural rigidity of ribs were provided for both specimens; (2) the JRA specification slightly overestimated the ultimate strength of both specimens; and (3) neither specifications predicted the observed buckling sequence in Specimen 2. A general-purpose nonlinear finite element analysis program (ABAQUS) was used to perform correlation study. The analysis showed that the ultimate strength and postbuckling behavior of the specimens could be reliably predicted when both the effects of residual stresses and initial geometric imperfections were considered in the model.Item type:Item, Experimental evidence for a two-gap structure of superconducting NbSe(2): A specific-heat study in external magnetic fields(2007-12-01) ;Huang, C. L. ;Lin, J. -Y. ;Chang, Y. T. ;Sun, C. P.Shen, H. Y.To resolve the discrepancies of the superconducting order parameter in quasi-two-dimensional NbSe(2), comprehensive specific-heat measurements have been carried out. By analyzing both the zero-field and mixed-state data with magnetic fields perpendicular (H perpendicular to c) to and parallel (H parallel to c) to the c axis of the crystal and using the two-gap model, we conclude that (1) more than one energy scale of the order parameter is required for superconducting NbSe(2) due to the thermodynamic consistency; (2) Delta(L)=1.26 meV and Delta(S)=0.73 meV are obtained; (3) N(S)(0)/N(0)=11%-20%; (4) the observation of the kink in gamma(H) curve suggests that the two-gap scenario is more favorable than the anisotropic s-wave model to describe the gap structure of NbSe(2); and (5) Delta(S) is more isotropic and has a three-dimensional-like feature and is located either on the Se or the bonding Nb Fermi sheets.Item type:Item, Experimental evidence for a two-gap structure of superconducting NbSe2: A specific-heat study in external magnetic fields(2007-12-01) ;Huang, C. Y. ;Chen, C. S. ;Chou, C. C. ;Tseng, T. Y.Chen, H. D.This paper is a comparative study involving sintering conditions (different sintering temperatures and time), process (conventional and microwave sintering), microstructures, and electrical measurements to investigate the mechanism of microwave absorption, and the difference in the microstructural characteristics and electrical properties of lead-based and lead-free ceramics. The lead-based piezoelectric ceramics are x(0.94PbZn(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) + 0.06BaTiO(3)) + (1 - x) PbZr(y)Ti(1) (y)O(3) where x = 0.5, y = 0.52 (abbreviated as PBZNZT) and the lead-free ceramics are (Bi(0.5)(Na(1-x)K(x))(0.5))TiO(3) where x = 0.18 (abbreviated as BNKT), all sintered by microwave heating. Experimental results indicate that PBZNZT and BNKT specimens have different microwave absorption efficiencies. Compared with BNKT samples, PBZNZT samples absorb microwave radiation more efficiently in MWS process. This might be attributed to the contribution of the dielectric constant and dipole loss which might dominate the absorption of microwave energy for ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials. HRTEM and energy dispersive spectroscopic investigations show that the grain boundaries of MWS samples exhibit less PbO and ZnO segregation than those of CS samples form PBZNZT specimens. On the other hand, BNKT specimens exhibit no compositional segregation at the grain boundaries after the CS and MWS processes. In addition, the MWS process can achieve a more uniform composition and crystallization in PBZNZT and BNKT ceramics, thus improving the electrical properties. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. L. ;Mukherjee, S. ;Chou, C. C.Tseng, C. M.The effect of external hydrostatic pressure up to 22.23 kbar on the temperature-dependent transport properties of the ternary compound Bi2Rh3Se2 is investigated. Interestingly, the resistive anomaly at T-s similar to 250 K, previously proposed as a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition, is shifted to higher temperature with increasing pressure, in distinct contrast to an established knowledge for CDW. Using temperature-dependent electron-diffraction characterizations, we have unraveled that this transition is, in effect, of a structural phase-transformation nature, experiencing the symmetry reduction from a high-symmetry C-centered monoclinic lattice to a low-symmetry primitive one below T. A more elaborately determined room-temperature C-centered lattice was also proposed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
