Item type:Item, A comprehensive study of temperature-dependent reflectance and photoluminescence of Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O thin films grown on c-Al(2)O(3)(2009-03-01) ;Lin, D. Y. ;Lin, H. J. ;Wu, J. S. ;Chou, W. C.Yang, C. S.We present a systematic study of temperature-dependent reflectance (R) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements on ZnMnO films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. For the first time, the three free-exciton transitions FX(A) (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(u)(7v)), FX(B) (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(9v)), and FX(C) (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(l)(7v)) and the longitudinal-optical phonon replicas of FX(B) and FX(C) of ZnMnO films have been clearly observed in the R spectra. The parameters describing the activation energy and the temperature dependence of the transition energy and broadening have been extracted by fitting the experimental R and PL spectra. The spectral data of ZnMnO films not only show the deterioration of crystalline quality with increasing Mn composition fraction but also indicate the Mn clustering caused by Mn atom segregation.Item type:Item, A comprehensive study of temperature-dependent reflectance and photoluminescence of Zn1-xMnxO thin films grown on c-Al2O3(2009-03-01) ;Lin, D. H. ;Huang, H. Y. ;Talite, M. J. ;Chou, W. C.Yeh, J. M.Colloidal nano-materials, such as quantum dots (QDs) have been applied to light-conversion nano phosphors due to their unique tunable emission. However, most of the QDs involve toxic elements and are synthesized in a hazardous solvent. In addition, conventional QD nano-phosphors with a small Stokes shift suffered from reabsorption losses and aggregation-induced quenching in the solid state. Here, we demonstrate a facile, matrix-free method to prepare eco-friendly nano-phosphors with a large Stokes shift based on aqueous thiolate-stabilized gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) with simple surface modifications. Our method is just to drop GSH-AuNCs solution on the aluminum foil and then surface modified AuNCs (Al-GSH-AuNCs) can be spontaneously precipitated out of the aqueous solution. Compared with pristine GSH-AuNCs in solution, the Al-GSH-AuNCs exhibit enhanced solid-state PL quantum yields, lengthened PL lifetime, and spectral blue shift, which can be attributed to the aggregation induced emission enhancement facilitated by surface modifications. Such surface-treatment induced aggregation of AuNCs can restrict the surface-ligand motion, leading to the enhancement of PL properties in the solid state. In addition, the Al-GSH-AuNCs nano-phosphors with a large Stokes shift can mitigate the aggregation-induced PL quenching and reabsorption losses, which would be potential candidates for "green" nano-phosphors. W.We studied the power-dependent photoluminescence of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O nanopowders grown by sol-gel method, at temperature T = 100 K. At moderate optical pumping intensity, a nonlinear emission band due to the radiative recombination of free biexcitons was detected. We found that the free biexciton binding energies of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O nanopowder (0.01 <= x <= 0.05) are nearly constant (13.5 +/- 1.5 meV). (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. S.Carrier dynamics and dynamic band-bending in self-assembled ZnTe/ZnSe quantum dots have been studied by means of time-resolved photoluminescence experiment at low temperatures. The experiment reveals clearly type-II character of the confinement potential in the dot manifested in: (i) long photoluminescence decay time constant of 28-35 ns, and (ii) temporal shift of the quantum dot peak emission towards low energy following the laser pulse excitation. The magnitude of the spectral shift Delta E depends on the dot size and the power density of excitation pulse. For the dots under study and given experimental conditions Delta E approximate to 28 divided by 42 meV.Item type:Item, Carrier dynamics in isoelectronic ZnSe(1-x)O(x) semiconductors(2010-07-26) ;Lin, Y. C. ;Chung, H. L. ;Chou, W. C. ;Chen, W. K.Chang, W. H.This study explores the effects of both Oxygen and temperature on the carrier dynamics of isoelectronic ZnSe(1-x)O(x) (x=0.027 and 0.053) semiconductors using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL spectroscopy. We find that the Kohlrausch law is highly consistent with the complex decay traces induced by isoelectronic O traps, and the mechanism of carrier recombination undergoes a complicated change from trapped to free excitons with the increase in temperature. Complex recombination processes are clarified using the relaxation model based on various decay channels. These findings are consistent with the initial fall in the stretching exponent beta followed by its monotonic increase with increasing temperature. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Y. ;Luo, C. W.Chou, W. C.Self-assembled CdTe/ZnSe Stranski-Krastanow quantum-dot (QD) structures, which have a CdSe-like precursor-layer (PCL) between CdTe quantum dots and ZnSe matrix, were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The carrier dynamics of the structures was studied by photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements. The temperature-dependent PL spectra revealed that there is a carrier transformation from small dots to larger dots via the precursor layer. Temperature-dependent PL measurements verify the existence of the QD excited excitonic state in 5.0 mono-layer (ML) coverage. In 0.6 ML coverage, the TRPL spectra exhibited a double-exponential decay process, as the detection energy at PCL emission energy. The faster decay time is corresponded to the carrier lifetime in PCL, the slower decay time exhibits the carrier in small QD. However, in 5.0 ML coverage, a faster and slower decay time represents the carrier lifetime in QD excited state for larger QD and the carrier lifetime in QD ground state for smaller QD.Item type:Item, Carrier dynamics in ZnxCd1-xO films grown by molecular beam epitaxy(2016-01-01) ;Cheng, F. J. ;Lee, Y. C. ;Hu, S. Y. ;Lin, Y. C.Tiong, K. K.In this work, the carrier dynamics in Zn1-xCdxO thin films with different Cd contents grown by molecular beam epitaxy system have been investigated using photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. The carrier lifetime can be estimated from the PL decay curve fitted by triple exponential function. The emission energy dependence and temperature dependence of the PL decay time indicate that carrier localization dominate the luminescence mechanism of the ZnCdO alloy semiconductor.Item type:Item, Catalyst-free highly vertically aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy(2009-11-01) ;Wang, J. S. ;Yang, C. S. ;Chen, P. I. ;Su, C. F.Chen, W. J.This work describes the growth of highly vertically aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays on wafer-scale catalyst-free c-plane sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy under high Zn flux conditions. The photoluminescence spectrum of the as-grown samples reveals strong free exciton emissions and donor-bound exciton emissions with an excellent full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.4 meV. The field emission of highly vertically aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays closely follows the Fowler-Nordheim theory. The turn-on electric field was about 5.9 V/A mu m with a field enhancement factor beta of around 793.Item type:Item, center dot-ray induced effects in Sm-doped strontium borate glasses(2013) ;Marinova, V. ;Tomov, V. ;Chuang, C. I. ;Lin, Y. C.Lin, S. H.Strontium borate glasses SrB4O7 doped with Sm ions are prepared by conventional melting-quenching method. The effect of center dot-ray irradiation on the glass samples is studied by measuring the absorption spectra and the photoluminescence. It is found that the center dot -ray irradiation caused partial reduction of Sm3+ to Sm2+ at room temperature. Borate framework is supposed to be responsible for the Sm3+ to Sm2+ transition.Item type:Item, Conventional vs Unconventional Magnetic Polarons: ZnMnTe/ZnSe and ZnTe/ZnMnSe Quantum Dots(2014-01-01) ;Barman, B. ;Tsai, Y. ;Scrace, T. ;Murphy, J. R.Cartwright, A. N.We used time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy to compare the properties of magnetic polarons in two related, spatially indirect, II-VI epitaxially grown quantum dot systems. In sample A (ZnMnTe/ZnSe), the photoexcited holes are confined in the magnetic ZnMnTe quantum dots (QDs), while the electrons remain in the surrounding non-magnetic ZnSe matrix. In sample B (ZnTe/ZnMnSe) on the other hand, the holes are confined in the non-magnetic ZnTe QDs and the electrons move in the magnetic ZnMnSe matrix. The magnetic polaron formation energies, E-MP, in these samples were measured from the temporal red-shift of the excitonic emission peak. The magnetic polarons in the two samples exhibit distinct characteristics. In sample A, the magnetic polaron is strongly bound with E-MP = 35 meV. Furthermore, E-MP has unconventionally weak dependence of on both temperature T and magnetic field B-appl. In contrast, magnetic polarons in sample B show conventional characteristics with E-MP decreasing with increasing temperature and increasing external magnetic field. We attribute the difference in magnetic polaron properties between the two types of QDs to the difference in the location of the Mn ions in the respective structures.Item type:Item, Decoherence of a charge qubit embedded inside a suspended phonon cavity(2008-01-01) ;Liao, Y. Y. ;Chen, Y. N. ;Chou, W. C. ;Chuu, D. S.電子物理學系This study elucidates the theory of phonon-induced decoherence of a double dot charge qubit that is embedded inside a suspended semiconductor slab. The influences of the lattice temperature, width of the slab, and positions of the dots on the decoherence are analyzed. Numerical results indicate that the decoherence in the slab system is weaker than that in a bulk environment. In particular, the decoherence is markedly suppressed by the inhibition of the electron-phonon coupling. Such a system with low decoherence may be useful for manipulating the qubits.Item type:Item, Density-dependent energy relaxation of hot electrons in InN epilayers(2009-01-01) ;Yang, M. D. ;Liu, Y. W. ;Shen, J. L. ;Chen, C. W.Chi, G. C.This work investigates the dependence of the hot-electron energy relaxation in InN epilayers on electron density. From the high-energy tail of photoluminescence, the electron temperature of the hot electrons was determined. Acoustic phonons have an important role in the energy relaxation of the hot electrons. The density-dependent electron energy loss rate in InN can be explained by a combination of longitudinal optical and acoustic phonon emissions. A slowing of energy loss rate at high electron densities was observed and attributed to piezoelectric coupling to acoustic phonons. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. Y. ;Cai, K. B. ;Chang, L. Y. ;Chen, P. W.Lin, T. N.Heavy-metal-containing quantum dots (QDs) with engineered electronic states have been served as luminophores in luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) with impressive optical efficiency. Unfortunately, those QDs involve toxic elements and need to be synthesized in a hazardous solvent. Recently, biocompatible, eco-friendly gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), which can be directly synthesized in an aqueous solution, have gained much attention for promising applications in 'green photonics'. Here, we explored the solid-state photophysical properties of aqueoussolution- processed, glutathione-stabilized gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) with a ligand-tometal charge-transfer (LMCT) state for developing 'green' LSCs. We found that such GSH-AuNCs exhibit a large Stokes shift with almost no spectral overlap between the optical absorption and PL emission due to the LMCT states, thus, suppressing reabsorption losses. Compared with GSH-AuNCs in solution, the photoluminescence quantum yields (PL-QYs) of the LSCs can be enhanced, accompanied with a lengthened PL lifetime owing to the suppression of non-radiative recombination rates. In addition, the LSCs do not suffer from severe concentration-induced PL quenching, which is a common weakness for conventional luminophores. As a result, a common trade-off between light-harvesting efficiency and solid-state PL-QYs can be bypassed due to nearly-zero spectral overlap integral between the optical absorption and PL emission. We expect that GSH-AuNCs hold great promise for serving as luminophores for 'green' LSCs by further enhancing solid-state PL-QYs.Item type:Item, Effect of donor-acceptor concentration ratios on nonradiative energy transfer in closely packed CdTe quantum dots(2009-09-28) ;Lin, Y. C. ;Wang, W. J. ;Chung, H. L. ;Chou, W. C.Chen, W. K.This study investigates the dependence of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) on donor-acceptor (D/A) concentration ratios in mixed-size CdTe quantum dots (QDs) films by using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL spectroscopy. Experimental results indicate that an increasing donor concentration significantly quenches the emission intensity and lifetime in donor QDs and enhances that in acceptor QDs, providing clear evidence of increased FRET efficiency. When D/A ratio exceeds 6, however, the emission intensity and the lifetime of acceptors start to decline, reflecting a decreasing FRET efficiency because of a markedly declining availability of acceptor QDs. R. ;Wang, Y. F. ;Chang, H. W. ;Huang, Y. C.Chen, J. L.An array of ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires (NW) for the highly efficient absorption of light and carrier collection is developed for use in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting. The oriented NW architecture favors physical matching, providing a direct electron conduction pathway and reducing the diffusion length of photogenerated holes. This work involves a combination of spectral imaging, spectromicroscopy and in situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy; spectra are obtained under operando conditions. Direct investigation of oriented nanowires using polarization-dependent x-ray spectromicroscopy enables the determination of the relationship between anisotropic electronic orbitals and charge carrier water-splitting efficiency. The results of O K-edge STXM demonstrated that the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW exhibits strong anisotropy and thus provides higher electron-hole transport efficiency than bare ZnO. In situ XAS revealed that interfacial charge transfer between Fe 3d and Zn 4p states enhances the photoelectrochemical reaction in the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW. The photogenerated electrons of Fe2O3 are transferred from Fe 3d states to the Zn 4p state under photoelectrochemical conditions.Item type:Item, Effect of ZnSe partial capping on the ripening dynamics of CdSe quantum dots(2007-02-19) ;Lai, Y. J. ;Yang, C. S. ;Chen, W. K. ;Lee, M. C.Chang, W. H.The ripening dynamics of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) partially capped with ZnSe layer are investigated. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images show that the ripening of QDs is dramatically accelerated by depositing a ZnSe partial capping layer. The driving force of ripening enhancement is attributed to the increasing strain energy with capping thickness. For a ZnSe partial capping layer of below 3 ML, photoluminescence exhibits a clear redshift with increasing ZnSe monolayers. It is attributed to the size of the CdSe QD increases with ZnSe partial capping, in a manner that is consistent with the results of the AFM study.
