Item type:Item, Hidden lattice instabilities as origin of the conductive interface between insulating LaAlO3 and SrTiO3(2016-09-01) ;Lee, P. W. ;Singh, V. N. ;Guo, G. Y. ;Liu, H. -J.Lin, J. -C.The metallic interface between insulating LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 opens up the field of oxide electronics. With more than a decade of researches on this heterostructure, the origin of the interfacial conductivity, however, remains unsettled. Here we resolve this long-standing puzzle by atomic-scale observation of electron-gas formation for screening hidden lattice instabilities, rejuvenated near the interface by epitaxial strain. Using atomic-resolution imaging and electron spectroscopy, the generally accepted notions of polar catastrophe and cation intermixing for the metallic interface are discounted. Instead, the conductivity onset at the critical thickness of 4-unit cell LaAlO3 on SrTiO3 substrate is accompanied with head-to-head ferroelectric-like polarizations across the interface due to strain-rejuvenated ferroelectric-like instabilities in the materials. The divergent depolarization fields of the head-to-head polarizations cast the interface into an electron reservoir, forming screening electron gas in SrTiO3 with LaAlO3 hosting complementary localized holes. The ferroelectriclike polarizations and electron-hole juxtaposition reveal the cooperative nature of metallic LaAlO3/SrTiO3.Item type:Item, Nonmagnetic impurity perturbation to the quasi-two-dimensional quantum helimagnet LiCu(2)O(2)(2010-09-29) ;Hsu, H. C. ;Lin, J. -Y. ;Lee, W. L. ;Chu, M. -W.Imai, T.A complete phase diagram of Zn-substituted quantum quasi-two-dimensional helimagnet LiCu(2)O(2) has been presented. Helical ordering transition temperature (T(h)) of the original LiCu(2)O(2) follows finite size scaling for less than similar to 5.5% Zn substitution, which implies the existence of finite helimagnetic domains with domain boundaries formed with nearly isolated spins. Higher Zn substitution >= 5.5% quenches the long-range helical ordering and introduces an intriguing Zn-level-dependent magnetic phase transition with slight thermal hysteresis and a universal quadratic field dependence for T(c)(Zn > 0.055, H). The magnetic coupling constants of nearest-neighbor J(1) and next-nearest-neighbor J(2) (alpha = J(2)/J(1)) are extracted from high temperature series expansion fitting and N = 16 finite chain exact diagonalization simulation. We have also provided evidence of direct correlation between long-range helical spin ordering and the magnitude of electric polarization in this spin-driven multiferroic material.Item type:Item, Nonmagnetic impurity perturbation to the quasi-two-dimensional quantum helimagnet LiCu2O2(2010-09-29) ;Hsu, H. Y. ;Chan, C. L. ;Mukherjee, S. ;Chou, C. C.Tseng, C. M.The effect of external hydrostatic pressure up to 22.23 kbar on the temperature-dependent transport properties of the ternary compound Bi2Rh3Se2 is investigated. Interestingly, the resistive anomaly at T-s similar to 250 K, previously proposed as a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition, is shifted to higher temperature with increasing pressure, in distinct contrast to an established knowledge for CDW. Using temperature-dependent electron-diffraction characterizations, we have unraveled that this transition is, in effect, of a structural phase-transformation nature, experiencing the symmetry reduction from a high-symmetry C-centered monoclinic lattice to a low-symmetry primitive one below T. A more elaborately determined room-temperature C-centered lattice was also proposed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
