Item type:Item, Agility index in the supply chain(2006-04-01) ;Lin, CT ;Chiu, H ;Chu, PY ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceTo achieve a competitive edge in the rapidly changing business environment, companies must align with suppliers and customers to streamline operations, as well as working together to achieve a level of agility beyond individual companies. Consequently, agile supply chains are the dominant competitive vehicles. Embracing agile supply chain requires asking some important questions, namely: what exactly is agility and how can it be measured? Moreover, how can agility be effectively achieved and enhanced? Due to the ambiguity of agility assessment, most measures are described subjectively using linguistic terms. Thus, this study develops a fuzzy agility index (FAI) based on agility providers using fuzzy logic. The FAI comprises attribute' ratings and corresponding weights, and is aggregated by a fuzzy weighted average. To illustrate the efficacy of the method, this study also evaluates the supply chain agility of a Taiwanese company. This evaluation demonstrates that the method can provide analysts with more informative and reliable information for decision. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The exhaustive comparison approach compares all possible order vectors instead of "an" optimal order vector to help the data analyst to consider "practical" solutions rather than a "desired" solution. An overall concordant order ratio is proposed to measure "how well" each order vector may represent the ranking structure of an ordinal data set. And the marginal concordant ratio evaluating the goodness of fit of each object in each order vector is also proposed in this paper. Comparisons among some popular ranking methods are discussed in this article. An empirical survey data regarding how travelers considered various factors for choosing travelling locations are used to illustrate the proposed method and calculations.Item type:Item, Multiple comparisons of ranking vectors(1998) ;Chu, PY ;Wu, SS ;Ding, CG ;Chang, WCW管理科學系Many managerial studies have indicated that the relative importance of the appealing of working factors far the working environment is perceived differently by different working classes. Different parties may rank the same working factors in different sequences according to their perceived importance. How do we establish a ranking vector of the attractive working factors for a set of employees? How do we compare the ranking vectors from different sets of employees? These issues need to be effectively handled to improve management quality. The concept of multiple comparisons of ranking vectors can be applied in many managerial applications, such as selecting portfolios, designing training programs, positioning, peer-ranking, conducting performance appraisal and so on. This paper discusses the concept of multiple comparisons of ranking vectors, and proposed a method for implementation. An empirical survey data regarding expectation and perception of a training program in a firm is used for illustration.Item type:Item, Virtual integration and profitability: some evidence from Taiwan's IC industry(2005) ;Chu, PY ;Teng, MJ ;Huang, CH ;Lin, HS管理科學系Taiwan's Integrated Circuit (IC) industry is of particular interest due to its increasing global importance and its unique, virtually integrated infrastructure. This study was conducted to examine the strategy-performance consequences of strategic group membership and attempted empirically to investigate the relationship between the profitability of Taiwan's IC firms (dependent variables) and both firms' business strategies (virtual integration versus IDM) and industrial business cycles (contingent variable). Data was taken from the Taiwan's Integrated Circuit industry for the period 1994-2001. Significant and interesting results were obtained. First, the main factor of business models significantly affects a firm's profitability and the variation over time. Secondly, the significance of the effect of the business models was still found when the variable of business cycle was included. It implied that the effectiveness of virtual integration to increase a firm's return on assets and return on equity existed at any stage of business cycles. An increasing number of independent IC design firms worldwide seem to support the findings of this study. However, the IDM firms may still exist due to their strategic commitment though the virtually integrated firms have higher profitability.
