Item type:Item, A bistable polarizer-free electro-optical switch using a droplet manipulation on a liquid crystal and polymer composite film(2010-05-10) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Li, Jiong-Kuan ;Chu, Ting-Yu ;Hsu, Hsu-Kuan光電工程學系A bistable, polarizer-free, and reflective electro-optical switch based on a droplet manipulation on a liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF) is demonstrated. A color droplet on LCPCF can be manipulated by a wettability gradient owning to the distribution of LC directors anchored among the polymer grains on LCPCF. The contrast ratio is around 8: 1 in a reflective mode. The potential applications of droplet manipulation are electronic papers and reflective displays. The main mechanism is based on the droplet manipulation on LCPCF whose wettability is electrically tunable. The surface properties of LCPCF are discussed. The potential applications of LCPCF are electronic papers and biosensors.Item type:Item, An electrically switchable surface free energy on a liquid crystal and polymer composite film(2012-12-03) ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Chu, Ting-Yu ;Tsou, Yu-Shih ;Chang, Kai-HanChiu, Ya-PingAn electrically switchable surface free energy on a liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF) resulting from the orientations of liquid crystal molecules is investigated. By modification of Cassie's model and the measurement based on the Chibowski's film pressure model (E. Chibowski, Adv. Colloid Interface Sci. 103, 149 (2003)), the surface free energy of LCPCF is electrically switchable from 36 x 10(-3)J/m(2) to 51 x 10(-3)J/m(2) while the average tilt angle of LC molecules changes from 0 degrees to 32 degrees with the applied pulsed voltage. The switchable surface free energy of LCPCF can help us to design biosensors and photonics devices, such as electro-optical switches, blood sensors, and sperm testers. The wettability of LCPCF is electrically tunable because of the orientation of liquid crystal directors anchored among the polymer grains. A droplet on LCPCF can be manipulated owning to the wettability gradient induced by spatially orientation of LC directors. We discuss the droplet manipulation on LCPCF and demonstrate several applications of LCPCF, such as polarizer-free displays, and human semen sensing.Item type:Item, Electrically surface-driven switchable wettability of liquid crystal/polymer composite film(2010-03-29) ;Chiu, Ya-Ping ;Shen, Cheng-Yu ;Wang, Wen-Ching ;Chu, Ting-YuLin, Yi-HsinThis study demonstrates the electrical control of the surface wettability of liquid crystal and polymer composite film. The application of external voltages significantly affects the surface wettability of the film. This study uses atomic force microscopy to quantitatively characterize the fundamental mechanism responsible for the structurally driven changes in surface properties at various applied voltages. The surface wettability transitions of the film are electrically driven, as shown by reorganized liquid crystal molecules. Measurements of the voltage-dependent surface wettability of the composite film suggest approaches to supporting control applications of future electro-optical nanotechnology devices.Item type:Item, The Dynamics of Human Sperm Droplets on a Liquid Crystal and Polymer Composite Film(2010-01-01) ;Lu, Farn ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Tsai, Wan-Chen ;Li, Jiong-JuanChu, Ting-YuA switchable surface using a liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF) based on phase separation between liquid crystals (LC) and polymers after photopolymerization is developed recently. The wettability of LCPCF is electrically tunable because of the orientation of liquid crystal directors anchored among the polymer grains under an in-planed electric field. A water droplet on the top of LCPCF can be manipulated under an inhomogeneous electric field on the LCPCF owning to the wettability gradient. The dynamics of a droplet of human sperms on the LCPCF is demonstrated as well. Three motions of sperm droplets are observed: the droplet collapse and the droplet stretch,. We found that the dynamics, concentrations, and activities of spermatozoa, affect the motions of a sperm droplet. The potential applications of LCPCF are polarizer-free displays, liquid lenses, and the microfluidic device in assisted reproductive technology (ART)
