A three-mode MDM multiplexer (MUX) and de-multiplexer (DEMUX) was designed and used. Each wavelength carrier had an aggregate data rate of 192-Gbit/s using 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulation. The mode crosstalk of the MDM MUX/DEMUX was measured to he below -20 dB in the 40-nm wavelength band from 1520 to 1560 nm. Fourteen wavelength channels are multiplexed and successfully transmitted with an aggregate transmission capacity of 2.6 Tbit/s (14 wavelengths x 3 modes x 64 Gbit/s) with all channels satisfying the hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold. Numerical analysis of the mode crosstalk is also performed.Item type:Item, 512-Gbit/s PAM-4 Signals Direct-Detection using Silicon Photonics Receiver with Volterra Equalization(2018-01-01) ;Hsu, Yung ;Chuang, Chun-Yen ;Wei, Liang-Yu ;Chow, Chi-WaiWu, XinruA 400-Gbit/s Ethernet (GbE) pulse-amplitude-modulation-4 (PAM-4) over 10-km single-mode-fiber (SMF) transmission direct-detected by an integrated silicon-photonics-receiver satisfying the IEEE P802.3bs requirement; and its feasibility to support 512-Gbit/s were illustrated.Item type:Item, 56-Gbps 4-PAM System over Nearly 40 km Transmission by Employing an O-band EML and SOA(2017-01-01) ;Hong-Minh Nguyen ;Chuang, Chun-Yen ;Shie, Bobby ;Wei, Chia-ChienLiu, Jun-JieThis work demonstrates a 56-Gbps 4-PAM EML-based transmission system. DSP-related techniques also necessitate the use of additional hardware/software components by the receiver, which can greatly increase implementation costs and energy consumption, particularly when dealing with large-scale ONU deployment. This is the first study to propose artificial neural network (ANN)-based pre-distortion to eliminate the need for complex DSP at ONUs in a high-launch-power LR-PON, thereby permitting the use of a simplified architecture at the user end. In the first phase of the study, the proposed ANN-based pre-distortion scheme was implemented in a single-channel IMDD OFDM LR-PON, which achieved a data rate of >55 Gbps over 60-km transmission with a loss budget of 30 dB without the need for optical inline- or pre-amplification. In the second phase of experiments, the same scheme was applied to a 4-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) OFDM LR-PON. Here, the proposed scheme achieved data rates of >200 Gbps using launch power of 18 dBm per lane, resulting in a loss budget of roughly 29 dB over 60-km single mode fiber transmission.Item type:Item, Bandwidth Enhancement Equalization Enabling a 40-Gbps PAM4 Transmission via a 9.5-GHz Photoreceiver(2016) ;Liu, Jun-Jie ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Tzu, Ta-Ching ;Chuang, Chun-YenChi, Kai-LunWe demonstrate a 40-Gbps PAM4 optical system by employing a photoreceiver with bandwidth of only 9.5 GHz. This scheme greatly increases tolerance to nonlinear distortion caused by the interaction between laser chirp and chromatic dispersion. Tuning the frequency gap between 2 to 5 GHz (in accordance with the transmission distance) makes it possible to mitigate a considerable proportion of dispersion-induced nonlinear distortion. Experiment results revealed that the proposed scheme can increase the achievable data rate by up to 136%, compared to conventional OFDM over 300 km of dispersion-uncompensated standard single mode fiber. Following transmission over more than 200 km, the proposed modulation scheme also outperforms conventional OFDM incorporating with a Volterra equalizer by up to 24%. We also conducted optimization of DML bias current and driving voltage. Our results show that operating at high bias and driving voltage can greatly improve data rates following the mitigation of distortion via gapped OFDM.Item type:Item, Sparse Volterra Nonlinear Equalizer by Employing Pruning Algorithm for High-Speed PAM-4 850-nm VCSEL Optical Interconnect(2019-01-01) ;Chuang, Chun-Yen ;Chang, Wei-Fan ;Wei, Chia-Chien ;Ho, Ching-JuHuang, Cheng-YuA pruned Volterra equalizer that reduces computational complexity by up to 85.2% in 112-Gbps PAM-4 optical interconnects is proposed.
