Item type:Item, A semantic differential study of designers' and users' product form perception(2000-04-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Chuang, MC ;Chang, CC ;應用藝術研究所工業工程與管理學系This study investigated the differences in the product form perception of designers and users. The semantic differential (SD) method was employed to examine the relationship between the subjects' evaluation of telephone samples and form design elements. The authors used 14 image-word pairs for the evaluation of telephone design. The format for a measurement scale was constructed by a projection method in order to extract design attributes for an SD test. Twenty-four real telephone samples were presented to 40 subjects (20 designers and 20 users) for subjective evaluation. Multivariate analyses were performed to analyze the subject's perceptions and to build conceptual models for telephone design. The result revealed that many differences exist between designers' and users' perceptions of the same real objects and their interpretations of the same image-words. Users are not clear regarding the meaning of the image-words. Moreover, they are very concerned about whether a telephone looks new. Designers tend to value telephone samples with an elegant style while users prefer modern and sleek designs. The conceptual models of the two subject groups are made up of different components. Creative, mature, delicate design images play a greater role in affecting the designers' preference while the users' preference is affected mainly by images of delicacy. The implications of differences in preference and the relationship between image-word and actual design elements for the two subject groups are discussed. Relevance to industry It is the users' needs and preferences, not those of the designers, that should be taken into consideration during the product design process. Due to the fact that many differences exist between designers and users, it is a challenge for designers to transfer the consumer's needs into technical and design specifications. Quantitative data on the relationship between design elements and user evaluations is useful to product designers and managers in formulating design strategies. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. In an experiment, subjects were asked to compare varied pairs of Ming-style chairs. These comparisons were then analyzed by using the methods of multidimensional scaling and multiple regression analysis. The results show that the perception of Ming-style chairs between designer subjects and nondesigner subjects are similar and that the three main dimensions constituting the subjects' perceptual space are 'elementary feature:'emotional image: and 'use feeling'. There exist some common critical elementary features among Ming-style chairs. The degree of style similarity (being perceived as the same style) between a pair of chairs will increase with an increase in the number of critical features shared. The influential powers to this perception of similarity are different among these features.Item type:Item, Effects of geometric form features on three-dimensional object categorization(2005-06-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Chang, WF ;Chuang, MC ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe purpose was to investigate the effects of 3-D form features on the object-categorization process. 30 subjects [17 male and 13 female undergraduate industrial design students whose mean age was 20.7 yr. (SD= 1.5)] were asked to classify 32 3-D prismatic images according to their similarity. Multidimensional scaling and cluster analyses indicated that the classification process was strongly related to the prisms' compounded features. The attention-weighting of each individual form feature was calculated by regression analysis which further indicated that each feature had a different effect on the categorizing process.Item type:Item, Expressing the expected product images in product design of micro-electronic products(2001-04-01) ;Chuang, MC ;Ma, YC ;應用藝術研究所Institute of Applied ArtsIn order to explore how to effectively express product image when designing products, micro-electronic products were used as examples in this study to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Firstly. through a questionnaire survey, we deduced that the five most expected images perceived in micro-electronic products are: (i) high-technology. (ii) efficiency, (iii) lightness and handiness, (iv) nobility, and (v) delicacy. Next, sample product photographs were presented to the subjects in order to make various evaluations. Through semantic differential analysis, factor analysis and multidimensional scaling analysis, the subjects' perception of these images for the evaluated products was revealed acid a perceptual map of these products derived. Design subjects' perception was compared to that of non-design subjects. Finally, through morphological analysis of these products, the critical 'form elements' and approaches of form treatment among these products were extracted. By using multiple linear regression, the relationships between each image and Various form features were concluded. These findings can be further applied not only to establish a desired image in designing products, but also to reduce the perceptual gap between designers and users. Relevance to industry In the development of micro-electronic products, methods enabling the designer to create an appropriate image for a product so that it may communicate with the user are always critical issues. From this study, the expected images of micro-electronic products and the corresponding form features to achieve these images were extracted. A design guideline was summarized accordingly by which the time and cost of product development can be reduced while the quality of the product designed can be enhanced. A set of 1035 test color pairs displayed on a CRT was evaluated for the degree of harmony. These test color years consist of pairs combined from among the selected 46 test colors evenly distributed in color space. The subjects were asked to select their three preferred colors from these 46 test colors and then to evaluate the degree of harmony of the test color combinations. The color intervals (DeltaE(ab)*) of each test color combination were calculated and treated as values of a independent variable. In addition, the evaluated degrees of color harmony were considered as values of a dependent variable, in which statistical analysis confirmed the relationship: the degree of harmony is a cubic function of the color interval. Moreover; the plot of this relationship allowed us to identify four color intervals: roughly corresponding to the regions of first ambiguity, similarity, second ambiguity, and contrast in Moon and Spencer's model. However, our results indicated that Moon and Spencer's principles for classifying harmonious/disharmonious regions in ten,ls of the color interval for three color attributes-lightness, chroma and hue-may be inappropriate in predicting perceived color harmony. As for the color intervals between a pair of colors considered as a function of the three attributes, the interval for lightness may have a predominant effect on color harmony, expressed in terms of a cubic relationship Results of the study further demonstrated that the subject's choice of colors significantly influences perceived color harmony. Subjects were asked to judge 26 mobile phone designs by using a user preference rating scale for Il image words. The determining Factors for user preference, including image words for design trends and product design elements, were specified through the semantic differential method, It was found that users prefer mobile phone designs with soft and compact images. Design reference models composed of relative weights of design elements were then proposed for specific design trends. In accordance with the design reference model, optimal solutions For preference and design trends of "soft" and "compact" were obtained through a specific algorithm. Concrete examples were illustrated and verified. The user's preference database can serve as the styling benchmark to help designers adopt a proper design and development perspective for the intended end users. Relevance to industry Important design elements and design trends related to the user's preference for mobile phones were extracted from the study. The optimal design solutions obtained from the database can serve as the styling benchmark for designers and managers in making design strategy, by which the time and cost of product development can be reduced, (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The effects of in situ N-2 plasma treatment on the barrier effectiveness were also investigated. The Al/W(450 nm)/p(+)-n junction diodes can sustain a 30 min furnace annealing up to 575 degrees C. With an in situ N-2 plasma treatment on the W surface caused a thin layer of WNx to form on the W surface, and the nitrified layer of WNx/W acting as barrier between the AZ and the Si substrate effectively suppressed WAl12 formation at elevated temperatures, resulting in a significant barrier improvement. N2 plasma treatment at 100 W for 300 s enabled the Al/WNx/W(450 nm)lp(+)-n junction diodes to sustain thermal annealing at temperatures up to 625 degrees C without degradation of electrical characteristics.
