Item type:Item, 13% Efficiency Hybrid Organic/Silicon-Nanowire Heterojunction Solar Cell via Interface Engineering(2013-12-01) ;Yu, Peichen ;Tsai, Chia-Ying ;Chang, Jan-Kai ;Lai, Chih-ChungChen, Po-HanInterface carrier recombination currently hinders the performance of hybrid organic silicon heterojunction solar cells for high-efficiency low-cost photovoltaics. Here, we introduce an intermediate 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAP() layer into hybrid heterojunction solar cells based on silicon nanowires (SINWs) and conjugate polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The highest power conversion efficiency reaches a record 13.01%, which is largely ascribed to the modified organic surface morphology and suppressed saturation current that boost the open-circuit voltage and fill factor. We show that the insertion of TAP( increases the minority carrier lifetime because of an energy offset at the heterojunction interface. Furthermore, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy reveals that TAP( can effectively block the strong oxidation reaction occurring between PEDOT:PSS and silicon, which improves the device characteristics and assurances for reliability. These learnings point toward future directions for versatile interface engineering techniques for the attainment of highly efficient hybrid photovoltaics.Item type:Item, A critical review on two-dimensional quantum dots (2D QDs): From synthesis toward applications in energy and optoelectronics(2019-11-01) ;Manikandan, Arumugam ;Chen, Yu-Ze ;Shen, Chih-Chiang ;Sher, Chin-WeiKuo, Hao-ChungRecent advances in the development of quantum dots (QDs) have offered new possibilities for the exploration of sensors, bio imaging, batteries, electrochemical water splitting and optoelectronic applications because of their intriguing optical, electrical, catalytic and electrochemical properties. Among QDs, atomically thin two-dimensional quantum dots (2D QDs) derived from graphene sheets, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers and phosphorene have been of considerable interest for the past few years. There have been several intensive studies of carbon QDs, but TMD QDs and heterostructures based on 2D QDs are rapidly advancing. Herein, the synthesis and properties of 2D QDs, particularly carbon and TMD QDs, are reviewed for the recent progress in their application toward electrochemical water splitting, photocatalytic wastewater treatment, supercapacitors, batteries and photodetectors. Moreover, the assembly of such 2D QDs to achieve industrial-scale production and boost their performance in widespread applications is emphasized.Item type:Item, A solar-thermal energy harvesting scheme: enhanced heat capacity of molten HITEC salt mixed with Sn/SiOx core-shell nanoparticles(2014) ;Lai, Chih-Chung ;Chang, Wen-Chih ;Hu, Wen-Liang ;Wang, Zhiming M.Lu, Ming-ChangWe demonstrated enhanced solar-thermal storage by releasing the latent heat of Sn/SiOx core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a eutectic salt. The microstructures and chemical compositions of Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs were characterized. In situ heating XRD provides dynamic crystalline information about the Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs during cyclic heating processes. The latent heat of similar to 29 J g(-1) for Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs was measured, and 30% enhanced heat capacity was achieved from 1.57 to 2.03 J g (1) K (1) for the HITEC solar salt without and with, respectively, a mixture of 5% Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs. In addition, an endurance cycle test was performed to prove a stable operation in practical applications. The approach provides a method to enhance energy storage in solar-thermal power plants.Item type:Item, An indoor light-activated 3D cone-shaped MoS2 bilayer-based NO gas sensor with PPb-level detection at room-temperature(2019-06-07) ;Chen, Yu-Ze ;Wang, Sheng-Wen ;Yang, Chun-Chuan ;Chung, Chieh-HanWang, Yi-ChungUtilization of light to boost the performance of gas sensors allows us to operate sensor devices at room temperature. Here, we, for the first time, demonstrated an indoor light-activated 3D cone-shaped MoS2 bilayer-based NO gas sensor with ppb-level detection operated at room-temperature. Large-area coneshaped (CS)-MoS2 bilayers were grown by depositing 2 nm-thick MoO3 layers on a 2'' three-dimensional (3D) cone-patterned sapphire substrate (CPSS) followed by a sulfurization process via chemical vapor deposition. Because the exposed area of MoS2 bilayers is increased by 30%, the CS-MoS2 gas sensor (GS) demonstrated excellent performance with a response of 470% and a fast response time of 25 s after exposure to 1 ppm of NO gas illuminated by ultraviolet (UV) light with a wavelength of 365 nm. Such extraordinary performance at room temperature is attributed to the enhanced light absorption because of the light scattering effect caused by the 3D configuration and photo-desorption induced by UV illumination. For NO concentrations ranging from 2 ppm down to 0.06 ppm, the CS-MoS2 GS demonstrated a stable sensing behavior with a high response and fast response time (470% and 25 s at 2 ppm NO) because of the light absorption enhanced by the 3D structure and photo-desorption under constant UV illumination. The CS-MoS2 GS exhibits a high sensitivity (189.2 R% ppm-1), allowing the detection of NO gas at 0.06 ppm in 130 s. In addition, the 3D cone-shaped structure prolonged the presence of sulfur vapor around MoO3, allowing MoO3 to react with sulfur completely. Furthermore, the CS-MoS2 GS using an indoor lighting to detect NO gas at room temperature was demonstrated for the first time where the CS-MoS2 GS exhibits a stable cycling behavior with a high response (165% at 1 ppm NO) in 50 s; for concentration as low as 0.06 ppm, the response of 75% in 150 s can be achieved.Item type:Item, Characterization of large area Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 nanotip arrays via photoluminescence(2012) ;Liao, Yu-Kuang ;Lin, Woei-Tyng ;Hsieh, Dan-Hua ;Kuo, Shou-YiLai, Fang-IIn this study, photoluminescence (PL) measurements were used to characterized Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 nanotip arrays (CIGS NTRs). Large area CIGS NTRs were yielded by using one step Ar+ milling process without template. Formation mechanism of NTRs is due to a highly anisotropic milling effect of the quaternary components compound. In both CIGS thin films with and without NTRs, saturation effects of Donor-Acceptor Pair (DAP) had been observed while excitation power dependence PL measurements. Comparing with thin film CIGS without NTRs, it has revealed that the concentration DAP had been changed after formation of CIGS NTRs and had enhanced its carrier density of the p-type semiconductor.Item type:Item, Crystalline Engineering Toward Large-Scale High-Efficiency Printable Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 Thin Film Solar Cells on Flexible Substrate by Femtosecond Laser Annealing Process(2017-04-26) ;Chen, Shih-Chen ;She, Nian-Zu ;Wu, Kaung-Hsiung ;Chen, Yu-ZeLin, Wei-ShengInk-printing method emerges as a viable way for manufacturing large-scale flexible Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 (CIGS) thin film photovoltaic (TFPV) devices owing to its potential for the rapid process, mass production, and low-cost nonvacuum device fabrication. Here, we brought the femtosecond laser annealing (fs-LA) process into the ink-printing CIGS thin film preparation. The effects of fs-LA treatment on the structural and optoelectronic properties of the ink-printing CIGS thin films were systematically investigated. It was observed that, while the film surface morphology remained essentially unchanged under superheating, the quality of crystallinity was significantly enhanced after the fs-LA treatment. Moreover, a better stoichiometric composition was achieved with an optimized laser scanning rate of the laser beam, presumably due to the much reduced indium segregation phenomena, which is believed to be beneficial in decreasing the defect states of In-se, V-Se, and In-cu. Consequently, the shunt leakage current and recombination centers were enhancement in photovoltaic conversion efficiency. both greatly decreased, resulting in a near 20%Item type:Item, Design of novel TiO2-SiO2 core-shell helical nanostructured anti-reflective coatings on Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 solar cells with enhanced power conversion efficiency(2019-05-14) ;Chen, Chia-Wei ;Tsai, Hung-Wei ;Wang, Yi-Chung ;Su, Teng-YuYang, Chen-HuaIntroducing an anti-reflective coating (ARC) is the last step of fabricating Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 solar cells with enhanced photo-generated current by reducing the reflectance of visible light. The use of nanostructures in ARC has been intensively investigated because this can prolong the optical path length by a scattering effect or by the formation of a refractive index gradient. Herein, we proposed the use of TiO2 helical nanostructures using glancing angle deposition (GLAD), and then synthesized SiO2 surrounding the helical nanostructures to further decrease the reflectance by producing a refractive index gradient. The optimized values of TiO2 and SiO2 thicknesses are 150 nm and 3 nm determined by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation on Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 solar cells. The suppression of reflectance led to enhanced light absorption across a broad wavelength range, and boosted the J(SC) from 20.66 to 22.51 mA cm(-2), resulting in improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 6.32 to 7.00% after applying the TiO2-SiO2 core-shell nanostructures as the ARC. This 10.75% PCE enhancement suggests that the novel TiO2-SiO2 core-shell nanostructures have great potential as ARC for Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 solar cells, and it would be beneficial for development in the photovoltaic field in both research and applications.Item type:Item, Direct Synthesis and Practical Bandgap Estimation of Multilayer Arsenene Nanoribbons(2016-01-26) ;Tsai, Hsu-Sheng ;Wang, Sheng-Wen ;Hsiao, Ching-Hung ;Chen, Chia-WeiOuyang, HaoItem type:Item, Dynamic Observation of Phase Transformation Behaviors in Indium(III) Selenide Nanowire Based Phase Change Memory(2014-09-01) ;Huang, Yu-Ling ;Huang, Chun-Wei ;Chen, Jui-Yuan ;Ting, Yi-HsinLu, Kuo-ChangPhase change random access memory (PCRAM) has been extensively investigated for its potential applications in next-generation nonvolatile memory. In this study, indium(III) selenide (In2Se3) was selected due to its high resistivity ratio and lower programming current. Au/In2Se3-nanowire/Au phase change memory devices were fabricated and measured systematically in an in situ transmission electron microscope to perform a RESET/SET process under pulsed and dc voltage swept mode, respectively. During the switching, we observed the dynamic evolution of the phase transformation process. The switching behavior resulted from crystalline/amorphous change and revealed that a long pulse width would induce the amorphous or polycrystalline state by different pulse amplitudes, supporting the improvement of the writing speed, retention, and endurance of PCRAM.Item type:Item, Electricity generation based on vertically aligned PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 nanowire arrays(2012-05-01) ;Chen, Cheng-Ying ;Liu, Te-Hsiang ;Zhou, Yusheng ;Zhang, YanChueh, Yu-LunWe statistically demonstrated the electricity generation from individual vertically-aligned/epitaxial PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) nanowires (NWs) using a conductive atomic force microscope (AFM). The measured outputs were analyzed in reference to the theoretically calculated piezopotential distribution in a bent NW. Our results show that the performance of the PZT NWs for electricity generation is at the same level as that of ZnO NWs although the piezocoefficient of PZT is high, due to high relative dielectric constant of PZT. Systematic investigating piezoelectricity from single PZT NWs will be useful for optimizing the performance for PZT nanogenerator applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Here, we demonstrate the direct growth of novel copper phosphide coated with amorphous carbon, namely heterostructured a-C/Cu3P peapod nanowires from chemically synthesized copper nanowires (Cu NWs) followed by a chemical vapor phosphorization reaction (CVPR) process at a low temperature of 400 degrees C. The heterostructured a-C/Cu3P peapod nanowires exhibit a superior electrocatalytic activity by a lower overpotential of 287 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a low Tafel slope of 72 mV dec(-1) and excellent stability over 1000 cycles. The superior electrocatalytic performance can be explained by the superior contact of the electrolyte with active sites on the heterostructured a-C/Cu3P due to the high surface area of peapod nanowire structure covered by defective edges of graphene with the encapsulated amorphous carbon layer, which can tremendously enhance electrical conductivity at the surface. A single surfactant (oleylamine) is used to prepare such heterostructured noble metal decorated CIS NCs from the pristine CIS. Such a feasible way to synthesize heterostructured noble metal decorated CIS NCs from the single surfactant can stimulate the development of the functionalized heterostructured NCs in large scale for practical applications such as solar cells and photodetectors. Photodetectors based on MoS2 bilayers with the synthesized nanocrystals display enhanced photocurrent, almost 20-40 times higher responsivity and the On/Off ratio is enlarged one order of magnitude compared with the pristine MoS2 bilayers-based photodetectors. Remarkably, by using Pt- or Au-decorated CIS NCs, the photocurrent enhancement of MoS2 photodetectors can be tuned between blue (405 nm) to green (532 nm). The strategy described here acts as a perspective to significantly improve the performance of MoS2-based photodetectors with the controllable absorption wavelengths in the visible light range, showing the feasibility of the possible color detection.Item type:Item, Enhanced wavelength-selective photoresponsivity with a MoS2 bilayer grown conformally on a patterned sapphire substrate(2019-02-14) ;Chen, Sung-Wen Huang ;Wang, Sheng-Wen ;Hong, Kuo-Bin ;Medin, HenryChung, Chieh-HanIn the present study, novel MoS2 bilayers with 3D structures were considered for their application as wavelength-sensitive photodetectors. Using e-gun deposition and a CVD process, MoS2 bilayers can be grown conformally on a patterned (cones or pyramids) sapphire substrate without any wrinkles on the 2D film. After the sulfurization process, the MoS2 bilayer is subjected to a local strain in the patterns and its band gap gets enlarged due to the strain. This phenomenon is beneficial for photo-devices to enable the collection of the photocurrent. Measurements revealed a broadband enhancement of the MoS2-based photodetector with a patterned array in terms of both absorption and photocurrent. It is noteworthy that a cone-patterned sapphire substrate (CPSS) is able to generate more photocurrent when illuminated under blue light illumination, whereas the pyramid-patterned sapphire substrate (PPSS) performs best under green and red light illumination. Simulations of the electric field distributions for MoS2 coatings on different substrates, based on 3D models, revealed that the sensitivity of the MoS2-based photodetector can be greatly enhanced by the light-scattering effect.Item type:Item, Environmentally and Mechanically Stable Selenium 1D/2D Hybrid Structures for Broad-Range Photoresponse from Ultraviolet to Infrared Wavelengths(2018-10-17) ;Chen, Yu-Ze ;You, Yen-Ting ;Chen, Pin Jung ;Li, DapanSu, Teng-YuSelenium (Se) is one of the potential candidates as photodetector because of its outstanding properties such as high photoconductivity (similar to 8 x 10(4) S cm(-1)), piezoelectricity, thermoelectricity, and nonlinear optical responses. Solution phase synthesis becomes an efficient way to produce Se, but a contamination issue that could deteriorate the electric characteristic of Se should be taken into account. In this work, a facile, controllable approach of synthesizing Se nanowires (NWs)/films via a plasma-assisted growth process was demonstrated at the low substrate temperature of 100 degrees C. The detailed formation mechanisms of nanowires arrays to thin films at different plasma powers were investigated. Moreover, indium (In) layer was used to enhance the adhesive strength with 50% improvement on a SiO2/Si substrate by mechanical interlocking and surface alloying between Se and In layers, indicating great tolerance for mechanical stress for future wearable devices applications. Furthermore, the direct growth of Se NWs/films on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate was demonstrated, exhibiting a visible to broad infrared detection ranges from 405 to 1555 nm with a high on/off ratio of similar to 700 as well as the fast response time less than 25 ms. In addition, the devices exhibited fascinating stability in the atmosphere over one month.Item type:Item, Epitaxial Photostriction-Magnetostriction Coupled Self-Assembled Nanostructures(2012-08-01) ;Liu, Heng-Jui ;Chen, Long-Yi ;He, Qing ;Liang, Chen-WeiChen, Yu-ZeSelf-assembled vertical nanostructures take advantage of high interface-to-volume ratio and can be used to design new functionalities by the choice of a proper combination of constituents. However, most of the studies to date have emphasized the functional controllability of the nanostructures using external electric or magnetic fields. In this study, to introduce light (or photons) as an external control parameter in a self-assembled nanostructure system, we have successfully synthesized oxide nanostructures with CoFe2O4 nanopillars embedded in a SrRuO3 matrix. The combination of photostrictive SrRuO3 and magnetostrictive CoFe2O4 in the intimately assembled nanostructures leads to a light-induced, ultrafast change in magnetization of the CoFe2O4 nanopillars. Our work demonstrates a novel concept on oxide nanostructure design and opens an alternative pathway for the explorations of diverse functionalities in heteroepitaxial self-assembled oxide nanostructures.Item type:Item, Fabrication of a Highly Stable White Light-Emitting Diode With Multiple-Layer Colloidal Quantum Dots(2017-09-01) ;Hsu, Shun-Chieh ;Ke, Li-Ann ;Lin, Hsiu-Ching ;Chen, Teng-MingLin, Huang-YuA hybrid design by combination of colloidal quantum dots and a traditional light-emitting diode is demonstrated to realize a high-quality white source. The cadmium telluride quantum dots are wrapped in the sodium chloride ionic crystal to prevent from environmental corrosion. Three different colors (red, yellow, and green) are picked to provide a better color rendering capability. The single color layer sequence in the package can be properly designed to obtain the best spectrum output. A stable (over 1500 h of continuous operation) and high color rendering index (> 92) quantum dot white light-emitting diode can be demonstrated.Item type:Item, Fabrication of large-scale single-crystal bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) nanosheet arrays by a single-step electrolysis process(2014) ;Tsai, Hung-Wei ;Wang, Tsang-Hsiu ;Chan, Tsung-Cheng ;Chen, Pei-JuChung, Chih-ChunNanolizing of thermoelectric materials is one approach to reduce the thermal conductivity and hence enhance the figure of merit. Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3)-based materials have excellent figure of merit at room temperature. For device applications, precise control and rapid fabrication for the nanostructure of thermoelectric materials are essential issues. In the present study, we demonstrate a one-step electrolysis process to directly form Bi2Te3 nanosheet arrays (NSAs) on the surface of bulk Bi2Te3 with controllable spacing distance and depth by tuning the applied bias and duration. The single sheet of NSAs reveals that the average thickness and electrical resistivity of single crystalline Bi2Te3 in composition are 399.8 nm and 137.34 mu Omega m, respectively. The formation mechanism of NSAs has been proposed. A 1.12% efficiency of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells with Bi2Te3 NSAs for counter electrode has been demonstrated, indicating that Bi2Te3 NSAs from top-down processing with a high ratio of surface area to volume are a promising candidate for possible applications such as thermoelectrics, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), and lithium-ion batteries.Item type:Item, Fabrication of large-scale single-crystal Cu(In, Ga)Se-2 nanotip arrays solar cell by one-step ion milling processes(2013-11-01) ;Wang, Yi-Chung ;Yen, Yu-Ting ;Liu, Chin-Hung ;Chen, Chia-HsiangKuo, Wei-ChenTemplate-free, one step formation of Cu(In, Ga)Se-2 (CIGS) nanotip arrays (NTRs) to enhance device efficiency were discussed. Through Ar+ ion milling process, the CIGS NTRs could be formed directly on the CIGS layer. The angles and lengths of CIGS NTRs could be precisely controlled by incident angle of Ar+ beam and milling time, respectively. Mechanisms were proposed to be a self-masking effect by Cu segregation formed at early stage confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscopy, Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, and Auger Electron Spectroscopy. Measurements of devices on various KCN washing time and thickness of CdS buffer layer were reported to achieve the highest efficiency of CIGS NTRs devices. This approach provides one-step fast process without templates, easy integration with in-line sputtering process, and no post-selenizatoin process for the formation of CIGS nanostructure, which can stimulate great attention not only in academic investigations but also in industrial side for practical applications. Different film growth mechanisms were discussed in perspective of the laser-produced plasmas and crystal structures. The fs-PLD has successfully improved the inherent flaws, Cu-2 (-) Se-x, and air voids ubiquitously observed in ns-PLD-derived CIGS thin films. Moreover, the prominent antireflection and excellent crystalline structures were obtained in the fs-PLD-derived CIGS thin films. The absorption spectra suggest the divergence in energy levels of radiative defects brought by the inhomogeneous distribution of elements in the fs-PLD CIGS, which has also been supported by comparing photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ns- and fs-PLD CIGS thin films at 15 K. Finally, the superior carrier transport properties in fs-PLD CIGS were confirmed by fs pump-probe spectroscopy and four-probe measurements. The present results indicate a promising way for preparing high-quality CIGS thin films via fs-PLD.
