Zuo claimed that the comparison of Birnbaum importance between two components for a consecutive-k-out-of-n:G system is the same as that for the F-system. We show that this is not the case and give a correct relation between the two systems. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study the Birnbaum importance of the consecutive-k-out-of-n line and clear up confusion in some claimed but unproved results. We introduce some new techniques which not only prove these claimed results but also generalize them much further. Finally, we extend our results to the 2-out-of-m-out-of-n line.

The (n, f, k) system consists of n components ordered in a line or a cycle, while the system fails if, and only if, there exist at least f failed components or at least k consecutive failed components. For the linear (n, f, k) system with equal component reliabilities, the system reliability formula was given by Sun and Liao (1990). In this paper, we obtain the system reliability formulas for the linear and the circular systems with different component reliabilities by means of a Markov chain method.
