Item type:Item, A New Cloud Storage Support and Facebook Enabled Moodle Module(2014-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Hsiao, Cheng-Hsun ;Yuan, Shyan-Ming ;資訊科學與工程研究所Institute of Computer Science and EngineeringWith Moodle a web based interface supporting a wide range of activities including forums, contents, and assignments is provided to assist both the teachers and the students. However, limitations of the file-size acceptable for uploads, weakness in the assessment procedure, complicated task of replacing an existing file, and the lowest visiting rate of the traditional discussion module are some major deficiencies in the traditional Moodle module. Thus, we propose a new Moodle module integrating both the cloud storage services and Facebook with the traditional Moodle module to cover the mentioned shortcomings. The module provides a straightforward uploading-function to allow, with only few seconds, uploading several large-size files simultaneously without any restriction on the files-size. The new module also offers an assessment-function that supports the web browsing of the files being uploaded to assist teachers, without the need to download and save each assignment separately, in checking and grading the submitted assignments directly via any web browser. The proposed module also integrates the Moodle with Facebook to increase the visiting rate of the traditional discussion Moodle module; hence, increasing the students\' motivation to ask questions and the interaction among the students. The performance and the usability of the new module was evaluated and promising results were obtained.Item type:Item, A small world based overlay network for improving dynamic load-balancing(2015-09-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Yuan, Shyan-Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceLoad-balancing algorithms play a key role in improving the performance of distributed-computing-systems that consist of heterogeneous nodes with different capacities. The performance of load-balancing algorithms and its convergence-rate deteriorate as the number-of-nodes in the system, the network-diameter, and the communication-overhead increase. Moreover, the load-balancing technical-factors significantly affect the performance of rebalancing the load among nodes. Therefore, we propose an approach that improves the performance of load-balancing algorithms by considering the load-balancing technical-factors and the structure of the network that executes the algorithm. We present the design of an overlay network, namely, functional small world (FSW) that facilitates efficient load-balancing in heterogeneous systems. The FSW achieves the efficiency by reducing the number-of-nodes that exchange their information, decreasing the network diameter, minimizing the communication-overhead, and decreasing the time-delay results from the tasks remigration process. We propose an improved load-balancing algorithm that will be effectively executed within the constructed FSW, where nodes consider the capacity and calculate the average effective-load. We compared our approach with two significant diffusion methods presented in the literature. The simulation results indicate that our approach considerably outperformed the original neighborhood approach and the nearest neighbor approach in terms of response time, throughput, communication overhead, and movements cost. Thus, we propose a self-directed learning system integrating eye trackers with a web based interface to provide an attention guiding function that aims at notifying the learners about the ignored or the skipped parts from the learning material as well as providing hints about the confusing sections. We aim at implementing a cost-effective system that can be used by learners not only at school, but also at home. In conclusion, we believe that the proposed system can be considered as effective tool to enhance the learners\' self-directed learning skills.Item type:Item, In-domain neighborhood approach to heterogeneous dynamic load balancing in real world network(2013-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we present a novel in-domain neighborhood approach to clarify the dynamic load balancing problem on a heterogeneous network and to solve many practical problems. The distributed system consists of a network of workstations with different domains, speeds and capacities. Since the number of workstations and the diameter of the network affect the convergences rate, our approach introduces the in-domain relation that classifies the entire network into sub-networks called domains. The algorithm runs in each workstation in order to reach the fairness state in-domain and in entire network rapidly. In this paper, our approach is applied to a cafeteria system as a case study, each workstation is viewed as a cafeteria where the maximum number of orders that can be submitted to one cafeteria corresponds to the capacity of that cafeteria workstation, the communication channels are modeled between the in-domain cafeterias, and the workload is represented as orders. An algorithm is presented to simulate the migration of the orders between in-domain cafeterias and to distribute a proportion of the excessive workload of heavily loaded node to lightly loaded node by considering the capacity of each node such that when the algorithm terminates, the effective-load in all cafeterias is the same. Therefore, each workstation receives an amount of workload proportional to its total capacity. This framework is analyzed mathematically, and it is proved that the proposed algorithm converges and achieves the fairness state.Item type:Item, Mobile Phone Enabled Barcode Recognition for Preferences Monitoring(2011-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Lin, Chia-Feng ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we present an innovative software system called Preferences Monitoring that makes use of modern middleware technologies and available hardware and communication systems. People can use the system to easily buy products that fit with their preferences. The system consists of mobile-phone side to scan product barcodes, submit user inquiries to a server, and display results. Results are related to whether users can eat or drink the product based on their preferences such as religion (no meat, beef, pork, or wine), or based on health settings such as allergies, chronic diseases or calories. Also, the system includes web services to facilitate user access to online profiles for editing accounts, viewing history-shopping and subscribing to other services. The preliminary results of testing our system show that the system can provide useful services for consumers. We also highlight some technical issues that arc related to reading barcode using mobile phones.Item type:Item, Mobile Phone Enabled Barcode Recognition for Preferences Monitoring(2011-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Lin, Chia-Feng ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityIn this paper, we present an innovative software system called Preferences Monitoring that makes use of modern middleware technologies and available hardware and communication systems. The existing applications have undertaken with the price and the location factors in mind. They show the same results regardless the personal special needs of consumers. The realization of the next generation of personalized systems will be a challenging task. For our research purpose, the personal special needs are defined as: (Religions, Cultures, Allergies, Health Condition, Diet, Preferences and Dislikes) needs that affect many aspects of a consumer life. In general there is no shortage of the restaurant apps available in the App_Store, However, many of these apps are based on regular factors such as price and location. They are not a great choice for consumers with personal special needs. This paper proposes a novel "Personalized Mobile Restaurant" PMR system. To meet the strict needs of consumers; a requirement driven design approach was followed. The proposed system was tested successfully and promising results were obtained.Item type:Item, We are so close, less than 4 degrees separating you and me!(2014-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Yuan, Shyan-Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceNowadays, the glory of social networking sites is unprecedented. Thus, we are so close; the world is even smaller than you thought; a friend of your friend probably knows a friend of others friend; Facebook shrunk the gap between us. The six degrees of separation theory proposed in 1967 stated that we are all just six degrees of separation apart. This paper addresses the research problem of identifying the degree of separation from a different viewpoint by considering not only the degree of separation between two normal-persons or famous-persons, but also between two persons with very rare-special features. We re-evaluate and extend the six degrees of separation theory by using a real social searching Facebook tool "We R So Close". Experiments were performed on Facebook platform; and the graph database was used to store the collected data. Results add a new phase to the research that cemented the phrase "six degrees of separation", it reported that the average number of acquaintances separating any two people no matter who they are even with rare-special features, i.e. those who work in rare jobs, is not six but 3.9.
