Item type:Item, A novel hybrid artificial photosynthesis system using MoS2 embedded in carbon nanofibers as electron relay and hydrogen evolution catalyst(2017-08-01) ;Niu, Fujun ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Zhu, Changbao ;Huang, Yu-ChengWang, MiaoInspired by photosynthesis in nature, artificial photosynthesis (AP) systems have been widely investigated in the context of energy and environmental research. Here we report a noble-metal-free AP system for visible-light-driven H-2 generation from aqueous solutions consisting of fluorescein (FL) as photosensitizer, single-layer ultrasmall MoS2 nanoplates embedded in carbon nanofibers (CNF) as electron relay and redox catalyst, and triethanolamine (TEOA) as sacrificial electron donor. This CNF-MoS2/FL system exhibits outstanding H-2 evolution performance, with an H-2 generation rate that exceeds not only both MoS2/FL (by 100%) and CNF/FL (by 1100%), but also the Pt/FL system (by 40%). The excellent photocatalytic activity of this CNF-MoS2/FL system can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of CNF and MoS2 coupling: (1) the simultaneous presence of MoS2 with its delocalized and increased Mo 4d unoccupied states and of CNF with increased graphitic characteristics enables electron transfer from FL* to MoS2 via CNF electron relay; (2) the single-layered ultrasmall MoS2 nanoplates with short effective lengths for electron transfer and high density of reactive S-edges effectively catalyze the H-2 evolution reaction (HER). The presented work successfully fabricated a highly efficient AP system for solar H-2 production from a fully aqueous solution and indicated CNF-MoS2 as a promising candidate to replace Pt for solar fuel conversion. Si MWs were prepared by photolithography and dry etching techniques. The CoS2Si photocathodes were subsequently prepared by chemical deposition and thermal sulfidation of the Co(OH)(2) outer shell. The optimized onset potential and photocurrent of the CoS2Si electrode were 0.248 V and -3.22 mA cm(-2) (at 0 V), respectively. The best photocatalytic activity of the CoS2Si electrode resulted from lower charge transfer resistances among the photoabsorber, co-catalyst, and redox couples in the electrolyte. X-ray absorption near edge structure was conducted to investigate the unoccupied electronic states of the CoS2 layer. We propose that more vacancies in the S-3p unoccupied states of the CoS2Si electrode were present with a lower negative charge of S-2(2-) to form weaker S-H bond strength, promoting water splitting efficiency. Moreover, the CoS2 co-catalyst that completely covered underlying Si MWs served as a passivation layer to prevent oxidation and reduce degradation during photoelectrochemical measurements. Therefore, the optimal CoS2Si electrode maintained the photocurrent at about -3 mA cm-2 (at 0 V) for 9 h, and its hydrogen generation rate was approximately 0.833 mu mol min(-1).Item type:Item, Atomic and electronic aspects of the coloration mechanism of gasochromic Pt/Mo-modified V2O5 smart films: an in situ X-ray spectroscopic study(2016-02-21) ;Lu, Ying-Rui ;Hsu, Hsin-Hua ;Chen, Jeng-Lung ;Chang, Han-WeiChen, Chi-LiangIn this work, gasochromic pristine and Mo-modified V2O5 thin films were prepared by the sol-gel spin coating method. Both films exhibit excellent gasochromic coloration. Synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray diffraction reveals that the Mo-modified V2O5 thin film is more amorphous than the pristine V2O5 thin film. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was utilized to elucidate the modifications of the local electronic and atomic structures that are caused by Mo. In situ soft-XAS and in situ hard-XAS were performed to monitor the effect of the adsorption of dihydrogen on the charge state of vanadium and local atomic rearrangement in the gasochromic thin films. The gasochromic V2O5 film has a significantly pyramid-like oxygen-coordinated environment. However, the Mo-modified film exhibits mixed pyramid- and octahedral-like structures. Analytic results indicate that upon gasochromic coloration, adsorption of hydrogen adds electrons to the V 3d t(2g) orbital, lowering the charge state of vanadium. The films undergo structural modification before the valence is changed. The Mo-modified V2O5 film exhibits faster coloration because the apical V-O bond differs from that in the pristine V2O5 film. This in situ XAS allows real-time monitoring of changes in the element-specific local atomic structure during the gasochromic reaction and enables the elucidation of the gasochromic mechanism.Item type:Item, Au-BINOL Hybrid Nanocatalysts: Insights into the Structure-Based Enhancement of Catalytic and Photocatalytic Performance(2019-04-10) ;Patolla, Shashank Reddy ;Kao, Chen-Rui ;Chen, Guan-Wei ;Huang, Yu-ChengChuang, Yu-ChunAdvances in new systems of organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposites are less prevalent, owing to a lack of facile strategies for precise control of their structures, compositions, and, hence, their properties. In this work, Au-BINOL hybrid nanocomposites with eccentric and concentric nanostructures were produced. The hybrid nanocomposites containing two distinct moieties of inorganic Au nanocrystals and organic BINOL nanospheres were applied to the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol with NaBH4 in the aqueous phase with and without the illumination of visible light. Here, we demonstrate that the existence of Au-BINOL interfaces offers benefits to their performance. The eccentric nanostructures made with CTAC show the superior activity from large Au-BINOL interfaces formed between the BINOL nano spheres and the faces of Au nanoplates. They further exhibit a high Au localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-enhancement effect on the photoreduction of 4-nitrophenol, which is attributed to the strong LSPR absorption of exposed Au nanocrystals unaffected by the coverage of BINOL shells.Item type:Item, Bifunctional cobalt phosphide nanoparticles with convertible surface structure for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting in alkaline solution(2019-03-01) ;Wang, Miao ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Huang, Yu-Cheng ;Shen, Shaohua電子物理學系Highly efficient non-noble materials for water splitting are essential for renewable energy application. Herein, cobalt phosphide nanoparticles with high P/Co ratio are synthesized and display overpotentials of 348 mV (or 343 mV) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with surface oxidized active species formed and 200 mV (or 184 mV) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M NaOH (or 1 M KOH) at 10 mA cm(-2). The improved OER could be ascribed to the smaller particle size for increased active site number and more importantly the improved intrinsic activity probably assisted by more phosphates formed during electrocatalytic reaction; while the improved HER performance is mainly attributed to the increased active sites in the form of Co-P bonds. In a two-electrode configuration, the catalysts exhibit excellent overall water splitting performance, with 10 mA cm(-2) at 1.58 V and a long-time reaction stability without attenuation during 10 h operation. For the films deposited in the gas mixture, the Ar flow rate was controlled at 20 sccm and the oxygen flow rate was controlled at 1, 3, and 5 sccm, respectively. A thin (similar to 5 nm) Pt layer was deposited on the VOx thin films as a hydrogen catalyst. The long-range structural order, short-range atom arrangement, and gasochromic properties of the deposited films were studied. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) results indicate that the deposited films are amorphous. Lamellar structures were found at oxygen flow rates of 3 sccm and above. The X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results show that the short-range atom arrangement of the lamellar VOx thin films is similar to that of crystal V2O5. The GIXRD and XAS results show that the film obtained with the gas mixture and at an oxygen flow rate of 1 sccm did not significantly change after exposure to hydrogen, whereas the other films exhibited decreased interlayer distance, oxidation state, and crystallinity. The color of the films changed from light or deep yellow to gray. The results suggest that the gasochromic properties of the VOx thin films are related to the V2O5-like atom arrangement and the interlayer distance of the lamellar structure. The films deposited with an oxygen flow rate of 3 sccm and above can be applied to H-2 gas sensors. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. MnO2 was deposited on the surface of C-CNT, RGO, and RGO-Au via a spontaneous redox reaction to facilitate the growth of the bulk form of MnO2/C-CNT and the surface forms of MnO2/RGO-based materials. Various forms of MnO2 on the carbon materials exhibited different charge/discharge behaviors. The specific capacitances of the MnO2/RGO and MnO2/RGO-Au electrodes at a current density of 1 A g(-1) were about 433 and 469 F g(-1), respectively; these values are about 1.5 times that of the MnO2/C-CNT (259 F g(-1)) electrode. Specific capacitances of 220 and 281 F g(-1) with retention rates of about 50-60% were obtained from MnO2/RGO and MnO2/RGO-Au, respectively, even at a high current density of 80 A g(-1). Experimental results revealed that the long-term electrochemical stability of the MnO2/RGO-based electrodes (with similar to 90% retention) exceeded that of the MnO2/C-CNT electrode (with similar to 60% retention) after 1000 cycles at a high scan rate of 80 A g(-1). This finding indicates that MnO2/RGO-based electrodes feature excellent cycling stability and rate capacity retention performance. To elucidate the atomic/electronic structures of the MnO2/C-CNT, MnO2/RGO, and MnO2/RGO-Au electrodes during the charge/discharge process, in situ XAS of the Mn K-edge was performed. The MnO2/RGO-based electrodes exhibited the least variations in the pre-peak intensity of the Mn K-edge during the charge/discharge process because a nano-network of MnO2 is homogeneously decorated on the outer surfaces of RGO-based electrodes to facilitate the growth of surface forms of MnO2/RGO and MnO2/RGO-Au. Analytical results further revealed suppression of changes in tunnel size and promotion of insertion/extraction behavior. This work, particularly the combination of cyclic voltammetry with in situ XAS measurements, will be of general value in the fields of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, and in their use in energy storage.Item type:Item, Electrochemically Activated Reduced Graphene Oxide Used as Solid-State Symmetric Supercapacitor: An X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic Investigation(2016-10-06) ;Chang, Han-Wei ;Lu, Ying-Rui ;Chen, Jeng-Lung ;Chen, Chi-LiangChen, Jin-MingA solid-state symmetric supercapacitor is successfully fabricated by assembling the sulfuric acidpoly(vinyl alcohol) (H2SO4-PVA) gel electrolyte between the two pieces of electrochemically activated reduced graphene oxide (aRGO) electrodes. The electrochemical and electronic properties of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and aRGO were characterized by ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The aRGO exhibits better electrochemical supercapacitive performances than RGO, owing to the conjunction of the electrochemical double-layer capacitance (EDLC) and the pseudocapacitance. The specific capacitance increases with the oxygen-containing functional groups content in the electrochemically activated aRGO than RGO, increasing the pseudocapacitive contribution. The aRGO20//aRGO20 solid-state symmetric supercapacitors (SSC) exhibit an energy density of 4.7 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 402 W kg(-1) and 4 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 1989 W kg(-1), which is competitive with the commercially available supercapacitors. To elucidate the atomic and electronic structures of the RGO and aRGO electrodes in the charge/discharge process, ex situ XAS at the C and O K-edge were performed. Both RGO and aRGO electrodes exhibit a reversible energy shift of the O K-edge, owing to the reversible redox pseudocapacitance close to the surface of graphene-based materials. However, the absorption edge of O K-edge for aRGO electrodes shifts more significantly than that for RGO electrodes during the charge/discharge process. The results indicate that aRGO electrodes exhibit rapid and more active redox reactions for pseudocapacitance than the RGO electrodes. The results herein suggest potential use in high-performance symmetric supercapacitors.Item type:Item, Electronic properties of free-standing TiO2 nanotube arrays fabricated by electrochemical anodization(2015-01-01) ;Chen, Chi Liang ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Chen, Chia-Hao ;Wu, Jen-WeiLu, Ying-RuiNanotubular TiO2 has attracted considerable attention owing to its unique functional properties, including high surface area and vectorial charge transport along the nanotube, making it a good photocatalytic material. Anodic TiO2-nanotube (TiNT) arrays on a Ti foil substrate were prepared by electrochemical anodic oxidation and SEM/HRTEM/XRD analyses have suggested that the walls of TiO2 tubes are formed from stacked [101] planes (anatase). Both HRTEM and XRD indicate an interplanar spacing of d(101) = 0.36 nm in the wall structure. Despite the large amount of work done on nanotube synthesis, a thorough investigation of the electronic and atomic structures of free-standing TiNT arrays has not yet been carried out. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) are employed herein to examine the electronic and atomic structures at the top and bottom of TiNT arrays. These analyses demonstrate the presence of mixed valence states of the Ti ions (Ti3+ and Ti4+) and a structural distortion at the bottom cap region of the TiNT. Additionally, the results obtained herein suggest the formation of a defective anatase phase at the bottom cap barrier layer between the Ti foil substrate and TiNT during the growth of electrochemically anodized nanotubes.Item type:Item, Electronic Structure Evolution in Tricomponent Metal Phosphides with Reduced Activation Energy for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution(2018-08-29) ;Wang, Miao ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Huang, Yu-Cheng ;Li, YanruiShen, ShaohuaNon-noble metal catalysts for high-active electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential in large-scale application for water splitting. Herein, tricomponent metal phosphides with hollow structures are synthesized from cobalt-contained metal organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., ZIF-67, by tailoring the feeding ratios of Ni and Fe, followed by a high-temperature reduction and a subsequent phosphidation process. Excellent OER activity and long-time stability are achieved in 1 M NaOH aqueous solution, with an overpotential of 329 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and Tafel slope of 48.2 mV dec(-1), even superior to the noble metal-based catalyst. It is evidenced that the formed (oxyhydr)oxide/phosphate species by in situ electrochemical surface oxidation are responsible for active OER. Accordingly, the simultaneous introduction of external Ni and Fe elements significantly influences the electronic structures of the parent metal phosphides, leading to the in situ electrochemical formation of surface active layer with decreased OER activation energy for greatly improved water oxidation performance. This electronic structure tuning strategy by introducing multicomponent metals demonstrates a versatile method to use MOFs as precursors for synthesizing high-efficient water splitting electrocatalysts.Item type:Item, Electronic structures associated with enhanced photocatalytic activity in nanogap-engineered g-C3N4/Ag@SiO2 hybrid nanostructures(2020-06-01) ;Huang, Yu-Cheng ;Arul, K. Thanigai ;Chen, Chi-Liang ;Chen, Jeng-LungChen, JieGraphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted considerable attention with regard to its use in photocatalytic solar hydrogen production by the splitting of water. High charge carrier recombination critically limits the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. Plasmonic metal nanoparticles that can generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) have been suggested to enhance the harvesting of visible light and to improve water splitting efficiency. However, direct contact between metal nanoparticles and g-C3N4 reduces the hydrogen generation efficiency owing to energy loss by Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET), which competes with plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET). Decorating g-C3N4 with Ag@SiO2 core-shell plasmonic nanoparticles increases its photocatalytic ability. Tuning the size of the SiO2 nanogap can optimize the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/Ag@SiO2, which involves a trade-off between PRET and FRET. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is utilized to investigate the electronic structure of g-C3N4 and its modulation with Ag@SiO2. In situ XAS reveals the dynamics of the charge carriers under solar illumination. Analytic results suggest charge redistribution, shifting of the conduction band, modification of the unoccupied states, and consequent improvement in photocatalytic activity by solar illumination. This work sheds light on the effect of LSPR on this photocatalyst with reference to its electronic structure.Item type:Item, Ex-situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopic investigation of NiCo2O4 annealed in different gases for hydrogen generation by electrolysis of urea(2019-06-14) ;Chang, Han-Wei ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Lu, Ying-Rui ;Huang, Yu-ChengChen, Chi-LiangElectrochemical and ex-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) measurements of NiCo2O4 that have been annealed in different gases (Ar and air) were made to evaluate the efficiency of its electrocatalysis of hydrogen generation by the electrolysis of urea. The electrochemical and XAS measurements demonstrated that NCO-Ar contain significant amounts of Co2+ in octahedral coordination was more favorable than NCO-air for urea electrolysis owing to the effective exposure of electrochemical active sites to participate in the Faradic redox reaction. Further insight into the electrocatalytic mechanism of NiCo2O4-based materials during urea electrolysis was obtained using ex-situ soft XAS. The results of ex-situ soft XAS revealed that the variation of the octahedral and tetrahedral coordinations of Co2+ in NCO-Ar and NCO-air importantly contributes to electrocatalytic behavior. NCO-Ar exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the Co redox couples in a repetitive cycling process owing to the creation of highly efficient active sites (octahedral Co2+). This study presents importantly x-ray spectroscopic determination of the change in electronic structure of catalyst for hydrogen production. (C) 2018 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Pseudobinary semiconductors Zn1-xCdxS (0 <= x <= 1) have exhibited a superior photocatalytic reactivity of H-2 production from splitting of water by artificial solar irradiation without any metal catalysts. However, most studies had revealed that the extremely high efficiency with an optimal content of Zn1-xCdxS solid solution was determined as a result of elevating the conduction band minimum (CBM) and the width of bandgap. In addition to corresponding band structure and bandgap, the local crystal structure should be taken into account as well to determine its photocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrated the correlations between the photocatalytic activity and structural properties that were first studied through synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The crystal structure transformed from zinc blende to coexisted phases of major zinc blende and minor wurtzite phases at a critical point. The heterojunction formed by coexistence of zinc blende and wurtzite phases in the Zn1-xCdxS solid solution can significantly improve the separation and migration of photoinduced electron hole pairs. Besides, X-ray absorption spectra and UV-vis spectra revealed that the bandgap of the Zn0.45Cd0.55S sample extended into the region of visible light because of the incorporation of Cd element in the sample. These results provided a significant progress toward the realization of the photoelectrochemical mechanism in heterojunction between zinc blende and wurtzite phases, which can effectively separate the charge-carriers and further suppress their recombination to enhance the photocatalytic reactivity.Item type:Item, In situ evolution of highly dispersed amorphous CoOx clusters for oxygen evolution reaction(2017-09-07) ;Chen, Dawei ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Zou, Yuqin ;Su, DongHuang, Yu-ChengElectrocatalytic water splitting is a key technique to produce hydrogen fuels, which can be considered as an efficient strategy to store renewable energy. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that occurs at the anode side requires a four-electron transfer under highly oxidizing conditions. OER has a large overpotential and therefore determines the overall efficiency. Certain electrocatalysts can efficiently help to improve the reaction kinetics. Owing to the high cost of precious metals such as Pt, Ru, and Ir, non-precious metal oxide catalysts have been vigorously investigated under alkaline conditions. Herein, we synthesized novel highly dispersed amorphous CoOx for the first time in the form of a cluster favorable to enhance the OER activity using a facile method via the air dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. Compared with the pristine biopolymer-cobalt complex, the amorphous CoOx cluster exhibits a much higher current density and a lower overpotential for OER, e.g., the overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and the overpotential of only 350 mV at 300 mA cm(-1). The excellent electrocatalytic OER activity was attributed to the unsaturated catalytic sites on the amorphous CoOx cluster. In addition, we studied the reaction mechanism, and it was observed that pure O-2 DBD plasma could lead to the evolution of crystalline CoOx; however, the presence of N-2 and O-2 in DBD plasma could ensure the facile evolution of amorphous CoOx clusters. This study provides a new strategy to design amorphous materials for electrocatalysis and beyond.Item type:Item, Interlayer interaction in ultrathin nanosheets of graphitic carbon nitride for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution(2017-08-01) ;Zhao, Daming ;Chen, Jie ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Zhou, WuHuang, Yu-ChengTwo-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets (CNNS) have attracted intense interest in photocatalysis, given their small thickness and high specific surface area favoring charge transfer and surface reactions. Herein, a facile strategy of breaking and following repolymerizing the heptazine units in bulk g-C3N4 (BCN) is developed to synthesize ultrathin CNNS with thickness of 1 nm in relatively high product yield (similar to 24%). The as-prepared 1 nm-thick CNNS show significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution than BCN and even the 3 nm-thick CNNS acquired by thermal oxidation etching of BCN. It is evidenced that the disordered layer structure of the obtained ultrathin CNNS causes strong interlayer C-N interaction, tunneling electron transport between the C-N layers. Meanwhile, the broken in-plane C-N bonds create more unsaturated N sites in the 1 nm-thick CNNS, facilitating the electron excitation from the occupied states in g-C3N4 to its unoccupied states for water reduction reaction. Local atomic and electronic structures of the films were then modified by thermal annealing. The oxidation state and structural and gasochromic properties of the films were elucidated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Analytical results indicate that the as-deposited VOx films were amorphous with mixed V4+ and V5+ valences. The amorphous VOx had a disordered and expanded lamellar structure resembling that of polymer-intercalated V2O5 gels. VOx films were crystallized into orthorhombic V2O5 at 300 degrees C, and the lamellar structure was eliminated at 400 degrees C. Additionally, the gasochromic reaction reduced the vanadium valence via intervalence transitions between V5+ and V3+. Moreover, removing the lamellar structure reduced the gasochromic rate, and the gasochromic reaction transformed the V2O5 crystalline phase irreversibly into an H1.43V2O5 phase. Based on the results of this study, amorphous VOx with a lamellar structure is recommended for use in H-2 gas sensors.Item type:Item, Mechanism of Electrochemical Deposition and Coloration of Electrochromic V2O5 Nano Thin Films: an In Situ X-Ray Spectroscopy Study(2015-10-05) ;Lu, Ying-Rui ;Wu, Tzung-Zing ;Chen, Chi-Liang ;Wei, Da-HauChen, Jeng-LungElectrochromic switching devices have elicited considerable attention because these thin films are among the most promising materials for energy-saving applications. The vanadium oxide system is simple and inexpensive because only a single-layer film of this material is sufficient for coloration. Vanadium dioxide thin films are fabricated by electrochemical deposition and cyclic voltammetry. Chronoamperometric analyses have indicated that the thin V2O5 film demonstrates faster intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions than those of the thick V2O5 film, benefiting the coloration rate. Despite substantial research on the synthesis of vanadium oxides, the monitoring of electronic and atomic structures during growth and coloration of such material has not been thoroughly examined. In the present study, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is employed to determine the electronic and atomic structures of V2O5 thin films during electrochemical growth and then electrochromic coloration. In situ XAS results demonstrate the growth mechanism of the electrodeposited V2O5 thin film and suggest that its electrochromic performance strongly depends on the local atomic structure. This study improves our understanding of the electronic and atomic properties of the vanadium oxide system grown by electrochemical deposition and enhances the design of electrochromic materials for potential energy-saving applications.Item type:Item, Nanoflaky MnO2/functionalized carbon nanotubes for supercapacitors: an in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopic investigation(2015-01-01) ;Chang, Han-Wei ;Lu, Ying-Rui ;Chen, Jeng-Lung ;Chen, Chi-LiangLee, Jyh-FuThe surfaces of acid- and amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes (C-CNT and N-CNT) were decorated with MnO2 nanoflakes as supercapacitors by a spontaneous redox reaction. C-CNT was found to have a lower edge plane structure and fewer defect sites than N-CNT. MnO2/C-CNT with a highly developed surface area exhibited favorable electrochemical performance. To determine the atomic/electronic structures of the MnO2/functionalized CNTs (MnO2/C-CNT and MnO/N-CNT) during the charge/discharge process, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were made at the Mn K-edge. Both C-CNT and N-CNT are highly conductive. The effect of the scan rate on the capacitance behavior was also examined, revealing that the pi* state of CNT and the size of the tunnels in pseudo-capacitor materials (which facilitate conduction and the transport of electrolyte ions) are critical for the capacitive performance, and their role depends on the scan rate. In the slow charge/discharge process, MnO2/N-CNT has a more symmetrical rectangular cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve. In the fast charge/discharge process, MnO2/C-CNT with a highly developed surface provides fast electronic and ionic channels that support a reversible faradaic redox reaction between MnO2 nanoflakes and the electrolyte, significantly enhancing its capacitive performance over that of MnO2/N-CNT. The MnO2/C-CNT architecture has great potential for supercapacitor applications. The information that was obtained herein helps to elucidate CNT surface modification and the design of the MnO2/functionalized CNT interface with a view for the further development of supercapacitors. This work, and especially the combination of CV with in situ XAS measurements, will be of value to readers with an interest in nanomaterial, nanotechnology and their applications in energy storage.Item type:Item, Nb-Doped Hematite Nanorods for Efficient Solar Water Splitting: Electronic Structure Evolution versus Morphology Alteration(2016-07) ;Fu, Yanming ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Lee, Wan-Yi ;Chen, JieGuo, PenghuiIn this study, Nb-doped alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod photoanodes were prepared via a facile solution-based process by directly adding NbCl5 in the aqueous solution. The morphology and electronic structure of Nb-doped alpha-Fe2O3 films depended strongly on the dopant concentrations. Compared with the undoped sample, the optimal Nb-doped alpha-Fe2O3 film showed an approximately 4-fold photocurrent increase under solar light at 1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency was increased by 2.5 times, reaching 13.7% at 350 nm and 1.23 V versus RHE. The enhancement in PEC activity, as induced by moderate Nb doping, was attributed to the increased charge carrier density for promoted charge transfer ability as well as the smaller nanorod diameter for shortened charge transfer distance. However, superfluous Nb dopants would destroy the nanorod structure and greatly reduce the thickness of alpha-Fe2O3 films, leading to poor optical absorption and thus decreased photoelectrochemical performance.Item type:Item, Operando Spectral and Electrochemical Investigation into the Heterophase Stimulated Active Species Transformation in Transition-Metal Sulfides for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution(2020-02-07) ;Wang, Miao ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Huang, Yu-Cheng ;Shen, Shaohua交大名義發表In-depth understanding of electrocatalytically active species transformation during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly guidable to design effective electrocatalysts for water splitting. Herein, cobalt sulfide (CoSx) nanovesicles decorated with iron sulfide (FeSx) heterophases were successfully synthesized by using a metal-organic framework precursor through a solvothermal method. The obtained CoSx/FeSx exhibited much elevated OER activity as compared to pristine CoSx and even most previously reported cobalt-based electrocatalysts, with the overpotential of 304 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH. As revealed by operando Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements, the electrocatalytically active species transformation in CoSx nanovesicles could be stimulated by the incorporated FeSx heterophases due to the increased average valence state of cobalt and lowered coordination of cobalt sites. As a result, the electrocatalytically active cobalt oxyhydroxides could be more easily formed on the catalyst surface during OER and thus contributed to the highly improved performance. This real-time spectral and electrochemical insight into the electrocatalytically active species transformation may guide the rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting from the viewpoint of electronic structure-electrocatalytic activity relationship.
