Item type:Item, A novel dispersion slope compensator for the WDM transmission system(1999) ;Chi, S ;Lin, SC ;Dung, JC ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA new dispersion slope compensator by writing the Bragg gratings at different positions in a dispersion compensation fiber is proposed for the WDM transmission system to compensate for the accumulated dispersion of each channel.Item type:Item, Adjusting the detection window to improve the soliton communication system(2000-12-01) ;Chi, S ;Kao, CY ;Dung, JC ;Wen, SF光電工程學系The improvements of the Q factors of 10-Gb/s soliton systems detected by adjusting detection window are studied. We have found that the optimal width of the detection window depends on the noise-induced timing jitter, noise-induced soliton energy fluctuation, amplifier noise, dispersive wave, and soliton pulse width. It is shown that the gain spectrum of the R-EDFA is shifted to longer wavelength when compared with that of the conventional single-pass EDFA. For the R-EDFA. the forward pumping is better than the backward pumping in gain and noise figure. Besides, the reflective structure can be used as a broad band light source because its ASE spectrum is wider and the output power is higher. We also show that, by using the reflective type configuration, the polarization dependent gain is reduced and the polarization mode dispersion of EDF can be completely compensated but the polarization mode dispersion from the circulator is still survived. A numerical example of the gain flattened and dispersion compensation for four channel multiplexed signals in the 1544-1556 nm wavelength region is shown. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. The allowed transmission distance for the system using mostly normal dispersion fiber is longer than those using mostly anomalous dispersion fiber.Item type:Item, Four-wave mixing between pump and signal in a distributed Raman amplifier(2003-05-01) ;Kung, TT ;Chang, CT ;Dung, JC ;Chi, S交大名義發表We observed. experimentally four-wave mixing (FWM) between a 14xx-nm pump and a 15xx-nm signal in a forward-pumped distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) over 50 kin of nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength of 1497 nm. The 100-mW pump Fabry-Perot (FP) spectra centered at 1440, 1450, and 1460 nm are reproduced via FWM around the single-wavelength probe signal around 1558, 1548, and 1538 nm, respectively. The suppression of DRA gain by about 2-3 dB was experimentally observed with peak FWM at minimum phase mismatching between two 14xx-nm FP pump wavelengths and two 15xx-nm signal wavelengths. This DRA gain suppression, together with the reproduced pump FP spectrum at 15xx-nm signal band, may limit the usefulness of the forward-pumped DRA, generating spectrally nonuniform FWM-induced noise floors and crosstalk in wavelength-division-multiplexed fiber-optic transmission systems.Item type:Item, Gain flattening of erbium-doped fibre amplifier using fibre Bragg gratings(1998-03-19) ;Dung, JC ;Chi, S ;Wen, SF ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA new technique, using fibre-Bragg gratings with different centre frequencies to reflect the different channel signals at different positions, is proposed for flattening the gain spectrum of an erbium-doped fibre amplifier. A designed gain excursion of <0.1dB can be achieved for 16 channel multiplexed signals with 0.1mW input power in the 1532-1562nm wavelength region.Item type:Item, Improving soliton transmission by filters and optical phase conjugation(1996) ;Chi, S ;Dung, JC ;Wen, SF ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsItem type:Item, Improving soliton transmission in a dispersion compensated system by pre-chirping and pre-shaping method(1998-03-01) ;Chi, S ;Lin, SC ;Dung, JC ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsSoliton transmission in a dispersion compensated system is numerically studied. The numerical results are consistent with the previous experimental results. The pre-chirping and pre-shaping method is used to reduce the timing jitter and the dispersive wave in a dispersion compensated soliton transmission system. We have found that the pre-chirping and pre-shaping method can stabilize the variation of pulse shape due to the perturbation of the dispersion compensation fiber and the timing jitter can be greatly reduced. These include the third-order dispersion and Raman shift terms. Using these equations, the effects of the third-order dispersion and Raman shift terms are found to reduce the soliton interactions in a polarization-division multiplexing transmission system.Item type:Item, Multiple soliton interactions in a polarization-division multiplexing system(1998-02-01) ;Chi, S ;Chen, CF ;Dung, JC ;光電工程研究所Institute of EO EnginerringWe numerically study multiple soliton interactions in a polarization-division multiplexing transmission system. It is found that, unlike the transmission system of solitons with the same polarization, the two soliton interaction is not the strongest compared to the interaction of more than two solitons. Therefore, the maximum transmission distance limited by the interaction of solitons cannot be inferred by the collision distance of two solitons in a polarization-division multiplexing system and the interactions of more solitons must be considered. It is found that the second-order Butterworth filters can reduce the soliton interaction more effectively than Fabry-Perot filters or third-order Butterworth filters because the second-order Butterworth filter induces larger frequency chirping on the soliton, compressing it as it propagates in the fiber after the filter. (C) 1996 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, Reductions of soliton interactions and timing jitters by chirped fiber Bragg grating filters(1997-12-01) ;Chi, S ;Lin, SC ;Dung, JC ;交大名義發表光電工程學系This letter numerically investigates a comparison between soliton interaction and timing jitter effects using transmission fiber that contains: 1) the zigzag-sliding-frequency Fabry-Perot filters (ZSF FPF's) alone and 2) both the ZSF FPF's and chirped fiber Bragg grating filters (CFBGF's), We have found that the latter scheme is more effective for reducing the soliton interactions and noise-induced timing jitters, because the CFBGF's introduce a large positive second-order dispersion and plays the dual role of a filter and a dispersion compensation fiber.Item type:Item, The application of optical phase conjugation in soliton communications(1996) ;Chi, SE ;Wen, SF ;Dung, JC ;交大名義發表光電工程學系Recent theoretical works on the application of optical phase conjugation in the soliton communications are reviewed and the effect of the in-line filter on the optical phase conjugation is numerically studied. It is shown that, by properly applying the conjugators and choosing the filter bandwidth, the soliton transmission can be significantly improved and its performance is better than applying the sliding-frequency filter for the considered system of 14.3 Gbits/s bit rate.Item type:Item, WDM soliton transmission system using dispersion slope compensators(1999-01-01) ;Lin, SC ;Chi, S ;Dung, JC ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA new scheme of dispersion slope compensator by writing Bragg gratings at different positions in a dispersion compensation fiber is proposed for the wavelength division multiplexing soliton transmission system. This scheme can compensate in-line for the accumulated dispersion of;each channel and suppress the dispersive waves which are caused by the incomplete filtering of the signals of the neighboring channels by using Fabry-Perot or Butterworth filters and the different propagating paths of the signals of the different channels in the dispersion slope compensator.
