For either one of these two materials, it is found that the critical magnetic field of these two nematic liquid-crystal (NLC) films with a free surface is equal to that of the NLC film with hard boundaries (HB) of the same thickness. This thus demonstrates a very strong orientational anchoring for 5CB and 8CB at the free surface. The intrinsic structures of FS samples are homeotropic, just as the HB ones are. For the dynamic response, the turn-off rates of FS samples are found to be about two times faster than those of the HB ones. This is interpreted with the backflow theory and the lack of positional anchoring on the free surface. Finally, a sensitive approach to determine the viscosity coefficients, gamma-1 and eta-c, of the NLC film is suggested.Item type:Item, MASS-SPECTROMETRIC MEASUREMENTS OF CO2-LASER DISCHARGES WITH TIME RESOLUTION(1992-08-01) ;LAN, YL ;HSIEH, TC ;電子物理學系Department of ElectrophysicsIn mass spectrometric measurements, knowledge of the gas dwell time in the glow discharge region has been utilized to time-resolve the variations of CO2 partial pressure in CO2 laser discharges. The measured data are interpreted by a dissociation-reformation scheme of CO2 molecules in the discharge. Rate coefficients that characterize the CO2 equilibrium process are evaluated, and their technical implications are discussed.Item type:Item, MISALIGNED SPHERICAL-MIRROR WAVE-GUIDE RESONATORS(1986-07-01) ;HSIEH, TC ;HSU, KY ;LI, Y ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsItem type:Item, OPTIMUM DESIGN OF LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAY PARAMETERS IN PROJECTION AND DIRECT VIEW APPLICATIONS(1993-08-01) ;CHENG, JS ;WU, TK ;HAO, CW ;HSIEH, TCGONG, YGTwo kinds of liquid crystals are selected with the aid of computer simulation for the fabrication of high-contrast liquid crystal displays (LCDs). One is suitable for the first minimum operation of a twisted nematic LCD and the other is suitable for the second minimum operation. The contrast ratios in the normally white mode of the first minimum operation and the contrast ratio in the normally black mode of the second minimum operation are both higher than 100:1. These LCDs can be used in direct view and projection applications.Item type:Item, OXIDE CONDUCTIVE COATED CATHODES FOR A SEALED-OFF CO2-LASER(1987-10-19) ;HSIEH, TC ;LAN, YL ;電子物理學系 ;光電工程學系Department of ElectrophysicsItem type:Item, REAL-TIME IMAGE PROCESSING USING PHOTOREFRACTIVE CRYSTALS(1994) ;HSU, KY ;LIN, SH ;HSIEH, TC ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsItem type:Item, SENSITIVITY OF FREQUENCY STABILITY OF 2-MODE INTERNAL-MIRROR HE-NE LASERS TO MISALIGNMENT OF POLARIZING OPTICS(1985) ;PAN, CL ;JEAN, PY ;KUO, CC ;HSIEH, TCLEI, TFItem type:Item, THE RESPONSE-TIME AND THE BACKFLOW EFFECT OF 5CB AND 8CB FILMS WITH A FREE-SURFACE IN MAGNETIC-FIELDS(1991) ;PAN, RP ;CHEN, SM ;HSIEH, TC ;電子物理學系光電工程學系Item type:Item, TRAINABLE PATTERN CLASSIFIER USING A COMPUTER-GENERATED HOLOGRAM(1994-04-01) ;HSU, KY ;CHENG, CJ ;HSIEH, TC ;電子物理學系光電工程學系A novel technique for pattern classification is proposed and demonstrated. The perceptron learning algorithm is used for training, and the trained interconnection weight matrix is transferred into a computer-generated hologram. The hologram is used as a correlation filter in the optical system for pattern classification. Both computer simulation and optical experiment results are presented.
