From the frequency shift and spectral broadening of the optical phonon mode of Si(111) covered by a 608-angstrom-thick oxide layer, a tensile stress of 19 kbar was obtained. The azimuthal distribution of the reflected second-harmonic (SH) signal varies with the thickness of surface oxide. To deduce the strain in the lattice-deformed layer, a simple microscopic theory based upon the bond additivity model was proposed, and an agreement between the results of SHG and Raman spectroscopy was achieved. This study suggests that SHG is a sensitive technique for examining surface stress/strain between two lattice-mismatched layers. Therefore it can be useful for the study of the structure of Si1-xGex and many other strained-layer systems.Item type:Item, RUBBING-INDUCED MOLECULAR ALIGNMENT ON AN ORIENTING LAYER OF POLYIMIDE WITH AND WITHOUT ALKYL SIDE-CHAINS(1995-06-01) ;HUANG, JY ;LI, JS ;JUANG, YS ;CHEN, SH交大名義發表The rubbing-induced molecular alignment on a surface of polyimide with and without branched alkyl side chains was investigated with optical phase retardation measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and second-harmonic generation (SHG). Our AFM results suggest that the rubbing-induced microgrooves play a minor role in aligning liquid crystal (LC) molecules. From the SHG studies, the detailed in-plane distribution of a LC monolayer on rubbed polymers was deduced, and the polar angle of the LC molecules was found to vary with the rubbing strength exerted on an alkyl-branched polymer. The polar angle of the LC monolayer on an alkyl-branchless main-chain polyimide film was observed to be independent of the rubbing strength. We propose a simple molecular model to reconcile these experimental results.Item type:Item, THE EFFECT OF PREPARATION PROCESS OF PMDA-ODA-DR1 POLYIMIDE ON ITS 2ND-HARMONIC GENERATION CHARACTERISTICS(1995-06-20) ;CHANG, CJ ;WHANG, WT ;HUANG, JY ;LIAO, CLLIU, JMIn situ second harmonic generation (SHG) observation of PMDA-ODA-DR1 polyimide films prepared by different preparative procedures were studied to understand the effects of the residual acid and the imidization byproduct and the extent of imidization on the SHG characteristics of the PMDA-ODA-DR1 polyimides. PMDA-ODA-DR1 polyimides with or without removal of salt were also investigated to study the influence of remaining triethyl hydrogen ammonium chloride salt on the SHG characteristics and reliability of the polymers. A blue shift in the UV/vis spectrum during poling was observed for the low-temperature-baked film, but did not occur for the high-temperature-baked film. Both high-temperature imidization and removal of the byproduct organic salt did not only improve the poling efficiency of PMDA-ODA-DR1 polyimide as a SHG material, but also slowed down the relaxation of the film and made the film more reliable. Moreover, owing to a dephasing-rephasing procedure involved, DR IVDFG can also be developed into a sensitive probe for investigating the coherent phase relaxation process in adsorbed molecules without the complication of inhomogeneous broadening.Item type:Item, THERMAL-STABILITY OF 2ND-ORDER NONLINEARITY IN POLED POLYMERIC FILMS(1995-01-01) ;HUANG, JY ;LIAO, CL ;WHANG, WT ;CHANG, CJ材料科學與工程學系The thermal stability of the poled polar order of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores covalently appended to the main chain of polymeric films was studied by measuring the generated optical second-harmonic signal over a wide range of temperatures. Our results provide insight into the relationship of the thermal stability of the poled order with chemical bonding and elastic interaction of the NLO chromophores in polymeric matrices.
