Item type:Item, 2-Alkyl-5-thienyl-Substituted Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b ']dithiophene-Based Donor Molecules for Solution-Processed Organic Solar Cells(2013-10-09) ;Patra, Dhananjaya ;Huang, Tzu-Yen ;Chiang, Chao-Cheng ;Maturana, Ramon Orlando ValenciaPao, Chun-WeiIn this study, we have strategically designed and convergently synthesized two novel, symmetrical, and linear A-D-A-type pi-conjugated donor molecules (TBDTCNR, TBDTCN), each containing a planar electron-rich 2-octylthiene-5-yl-substituted benzodithiophene (TBDT) unit as the core, flanked by octylthiophene units and end-capped with electron-deficient cyanoacetate (CNR) or dicyanovinyl (CN) units. We thoroughly characterized both of these materials and investigated the effects of the end groups (CNR, CN) on their optical, electrochemical, morphological, and photovoltaic properties. We then fabricated solution-processed bulk heterojunction organic solar cells incorporating TBDTCNR and TBDTCN. Among our tested devices, the one containing TBDTCNR and [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester in a 1:0.40 ratio (w/w) exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency (5.42%) with a short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 9.08 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.90 V, and an impressive fill factor (FF) of 0.66 under AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)). The FFs of these solution-processed small-molecule organic solar cells (SMOSCs) are outstanding when compared with those recently reported for benzodithiophene (BDT)-based SMOSCs, because of the high crystallinity and excellent stacking properties of the TBDT-based compounds.Item type:Item, A counter electrode based on hollow spherical particles of polyaniline for a dye-sensitized solar cell(2012) ;Huang, Kuan-Chieh ;Hu, Chih-Wei ;Tseng, Chen-Ya ;Liu, Chen-YuYeh, Min-HsinHollow spherical polyaniline (hsPANI) particles are synthesized and deposited on an ITO/glass substrate to prepare a counter electrode (designated as hsPANI-CE) for a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The structure and crystallization of the hsPANI particles are characterized by using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectra. A power-conversion efficiency (h) of 6.84% is obtained for the DSSC with the hsPANI-CE, while it is 6.02% in the case of the DSSC with a CE based on pristine PANI (designated as PANI-CE). Such enhancement is attributed to the hsPANI film having a larger active surface area (A) of 0.191 cm(2), compared to that of the PANI film (A = 0.126 cm(2)), both values being estimated by a rotating disk electrode (RDE). Cyclic voltammetric (CV) curves have evidenced that the electro-catalytic ability of the hsPANI-CE for the reduction of tri-iodide (I-3(-)) ions is higher than that of the PANI-CE. As a reference, the DSSC with a Pt-sputtered CE gives an h of 7.17%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) spectra are used to substantiate the photovoltaic behaviors. The results suggest that the film consisting of hsPANI particles can be a potential catalytic layer for the replacement of Pt in the CE of a DSSC.Item type:Item, A high performance electrochemical sensor for acetaminophen based on a rGO-PEDOT nanotube composite modified electrode(2014) ;Huang, Tzu-Yen ;Kung, Chung-Wei ;Wei, Hung-Yu ;Boopathi, Karunakara MoorthyChu, Chih-WeiIn this study, we perform an electrochemical sensing using a conductive composite film containing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) nanotubes (PEDOT NTs) as an electrode modifier on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Scanning electron microscopy suggests that the rGO covers the surface of GCE uniformly and the PEDOT NTs act as a conducting bridge to connect the isolated rGO sheets. By combining these two materials, the conductivity and the surface coverage of the film can be enhanced, which is beneficial for electrochemical sensing. The rGO-PEDOT NT composite modified electrode is applied for an effective sensor to analyze acetaminophen. The obtained electrochemical activity is much higher than those obtained by the rGO-and PEDOT NT-modified electrodes; the higher electrochemical activity may be attributed to the higher conductivity and greater coverage of the rGO-PEDOT NT composite film on the GCE. Furthermore, interference tests indicate that the rGO-PEDOT NT composite modified electrode exhibits high selectivity toward the analyte. This novel method for combining the rGO and PEDOT NTs establishes a new class of carbon material-based electrodes for electrochemical sensors.Item type:Item, A Strategic Buffer Layer of Polythiophene Enhances the Efficiency of Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells(2010-05-01) ;Wei, Hung-Yu ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Ho, Kuo-Chuan ;Chu, Chih-Wei光電工程學系We have developed polymer solar cells featuring a buffer layer of polythiophene (PT) sandwiched between the active layer and the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) layer. We attribute the improvement in power conversion efficiency of these polymer solar cells, relative to that of those based on poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM), to a reduction in the degree of carrier recombination at the junction interface. Because the conductivity and the energy level of PT can be tuned simply by applying a bias to it in an electrolytic solution, we also investigated the effect of the energy level on the devices' performances. The power conversion efficiency of a solar cell containing a PT buffer layer reached 4.18% under AM 1.5 G irradiation (100 mW/cm(2)).Item type:Item, A ternary cascade structure enhances the efficiency of polymer solar cells(2010) ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Velusamy, Marappan ;Ho, Kuo-Chuan ;Lin, Jiann-TsuenChu, Chih-WeiIn this study, a novel solution-processed small molecule (TQTFA) for use as an electron donor has been incorporated into organic solar cells based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and (6,6)-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl (PC[70]BM). The combination of TQTFA with P3HT and PC[70]BM allows not only a broad absorption but also tuning of the inter energy level leading to a higher short-circuit current (J(SC)) and open-circuit voltage (V(OC)). The best performing devices exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 4.50%. The efficiency is increased by almost 15% when compared to the one without TQTFA.Item type:Item, Annealing effect of polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells based on polyfluorene and fullerene blend(2009-02-01) ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Yang, Chuan-Yi ;Ho, Zhong-Yo ;Kekuda, DhananjayWu, Meng-ChyiControl of blend morphology at the nanoscale and high charge mobility is essential for polymer photovoltaic devices in terms of their power conversion efficiencies (PCE). In the case of bulk heterojunctions solar cells, both blend morphology and charge mobility are influenced by thermal treatment. In this manuscript, we study the effects of annealing temperature on polymer PV devices with blends of poly[9,9'-dioctyl-fluorene-co-bithiophene] (F8T2) and [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The morphological changes of blended films were observed upon thermal annealing temperature near and above glass transition temperature (130 degrees C). Such microstructural transformations resulted in modified charge transport pathways and therefore greately influenced the device performance. The highest PCE of 2.14% with an open-circuit voltage (V(OC)) of 0.99 V and a short-circuit current (J(SC)) of 4.24 mA/cm(2) was achieved by device annealing at 70 degrees C for 20 min. Different from the previous reports, the fabricated TFTs exhibit p-type conductivity in its undoped form. The postdeposition annealing temperature was tuned to achieve p-channel SnO(2) TFTs. The on/ off ratio and the field-effect mobility were similar to 10(3) and 0.011 cm(2)/V s, respectively. To demonstrate inverter circuit, two devices with different threshold voltages were combined and an output gain of 2.8 was achieved. The realization of p-channel oxide TFTs would open up new challenges in the area of transparent electronics. The asymmetric benzo[2,1-b:-3,4-b':5,6-b"]trithiophene unit was used as the central core to which were appended various donor groups, namely, carbazole (BTT-CB), thieno thiophene (BTT-FT), triphenylamine (BTT-TPA), and bithiophene (BTT-TT). The extended aromatic core in the asymmetric BTT provided full planarity, thereby favoring intermolecular pi-stacking and charge transport. The physical, optical, and electrical properties of these small-molecule HTMs are reported herein. BTT-TT displayed good crystallinity and superior hole mobility, when compared with those of the other three HTMs, and formed smooth and uniform surfaces when covering the perovskite active layer. Accordingly, among the devices prepared in this study, a PSC incorporating BTT-TT as the HTM achieved the highest power conversion efficiency (18.58%). Moreover, this BTT-TT-containing device exhibited good stability after storage for more than 700 h. Thus, asymmetric BTTs are promising candidate materials for use as small-molecule HTMs in PSCs.Item type:Item, Complementary inverter circuits based on p-SnO(2) and n-In(2)O(3) thin film transistors(2008-06-09) ;Dhananjay ;Chu, Chih-Wei ;Ou, Chun-Wei ;Wu, Meng-ChyiHo, Zhong-YoThin film transistors (TFTs) of indium oxide (In(2)O(3)) and tin oxide (SnO(2)) were fabricated on SiO(2) gate dielectric using reactive evaporation process. Structural investigation of the films revealed that In(2)O(3) films were polycrystalline in nature with preferred (222) orientation and SnO(2) films exhibited amorphous nature. The x-ray photoelectric spectroscopy measurements suggest that SnO(2) films were oxygen rich and presume mixed oxidation states of Sn, namely Sn(2+) and Sn(4+). While the In(2)O(3) based TFTs possess n-type channel conduction, SnO(2) based TFTs exhibited anomalous p-type conductivity. Integration of these n- and p-type devices resulted in complementary inverter with a gain of 11. The QDSSC with PEDOT-CE exhibited the highest solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency (eta) of 1.35%, which is remarkably higher than those of the cells with PT-CE (0.09%) and PPy-CE (0.41%) and very slightly higher than that of the cell with sputtered-gold-CE (1.33%). Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) show that this highest conversion efficiency of the PEDOT-based cell is due to higher electrocatalytic activity and reduced charge transfer resistance at the interface of the CE and the electrolyte, compared to those in the case of the cells with other conducting polymers and bare Au. Furthermore, the influences of morphology of the PEDOT film and the charge passed for its electropolymerization on the performance of its QDSSC were also studied. The higher porosity and surface roughness of the PEDOT matrix, with reference to those of other polymers are understood to be the reason for PEDOT to possess higher electrocatalytic activity at its interface with electrolyte. The HCLs with a pore structure can offer a large interface to enhance hole collection; however, the series resistances are also increased by the relatively pore morphology. Photovoltaic device with the largest short circuit current (J(sc)) and efficiency is achieved using poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDoT) as HCLs due to its highly porous structure and reasonable series resistance. By further optimizing the thickness of the HCLs in the solar cell, a power efficiency of 3.57% under simulated sun light is achieved.Item type:Item, Correlation between Exciton Lifetime Distribution and Morphology of Bulk Heterojunction Films after Solvent Annealing(2010-05-20) ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Li, Kuang-Chieh ;Chien, Fan-Ching ;Hsiao, Yu-ShengKekuda, DhananjayWe have synthesized a low-bandgap polymer, bithiazole-based polymer (PCPDTTBT) containing cyclopentadithiophene and thiophene units, and studied its opticophysical properties and morphologies in bulk heterojunction films after annealing. We used confocal optical microscopy in conjunction with a fluorescence module to record exciton lifetime images within photoactive layers of PCPDTTBT and [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). These images, which were consistent with those recorded using atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, revealed that phase separation of PCPDTTBT and PCBM occurred during slow solvent evaporation. This phase separation not only provided bicontinuous pathways for carrier transport to the respective electrodes hut also enhanced the degree of polymer chain stacking, thereby improving the absorption and balancing the electron and hole mobilities. We tested the performance of solar cells incorporating PCPDTTBT and various fullerene derivatives. Under AM 1.5 G illumination (100 mW cm(-2)), a PCPDTTBT/bisPCBM-based solar cell exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 3.8%, with a short circuit current of 7.3 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.88 V, and a fill factor of 59.1%.Item type:Item, Dual-color electrochromic films incorporating a periodic polymer nanostructure(2012) ;Wei, Hung-Yu ;Hsiao, Yu-Sheng ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Hsu, Chih-YuChang, Feng-ChihIn this study, we used electrochemical deposition with a polystyrene (PS) bead template to prepare thin layers of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) that has a nanometer-scale honeycomb periodicity. To achieve dual-color electrochromic films, we then used pulsed electrochemical deposition to form polyaniline (PANI) layers on the rims of the PEDOT honeycomb film. Modifying the depositing charge density of PANI allowed tuning of the color of the composite films. We estimated the coloration efficiencies with respect to the values expected for corresponding amounts of pristine single layers of PEDOT and PANI. As a result of improved contact between the polymer film and the electrolyte, the coloration efficiencies of the structured composite films were much closer to their theoretical values than those of the corresponding bilayer composite films. Moreover, the switching times of the structured composite films were much faster than those of the bilayer composite films prepared without the nanostructures.Item type:Item, Dye-sensitized solar cells with a micro-porous TiO(2) electrode and gel polymer electrolytes prepared by in situ cross-link reaction(2009-11-01) ;Lee, Kun-Mu ;Hsu, Chih-Yu ;Chiu, Wei-Hao ;Tsui, Meng-ChinTung, Yung-LiangThe ionic conductivities and performances of dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) of gel polymer electrolytes(GPEs) prepared by in situ cross-link reaction with different cross-linkers were investigated. The poly(imidazole-co-butylmethacrylate)-based GPE containing the 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(bromomethyl)benzene (B4Br) cross-linker showed a higher ionic conductivity than that containing cross-linkers with a linear structure, due to the formation of micro-phase separation that resulted in an increase in ion transport paths in the GPE. Moreover, the co-adsorbent((4-pyridylthio) acetic acid, PAA) co-adsorbed with N3 dye on the TiO(2) electrode not only reduced dye aggregation, but also reacted with the cross linkers in the GPE at the TiO(2)/GPE interface. A decrease in the charge transport resistance at the TiO2/GPE interface was noted after forming the gel; thus the value of J(SC) significantly increased from 7.72 to 10.00 m A cm(-2). In addition, in order to reduce the ionic diffusion resistance within the TiO(2) electrode, incorporation of monodispersed PMMA in the TiO(2) paste was considered. With the optimal weight ratio of PMMA/TiO(2) (w/w 3.75), the TiO(2) electrode exhibited larger pores (ca. 350 nm) uniformly distributed afters intering at 500 degrees C, and the ionic diffusion resistance within the TiO2 film could significantly be reduced. The cell conversion efficiency increased from 3.61% to 5.81% under illumination of 100 mW cm (-2), an improvement of ca. 55%. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. The surface morphology and the nature of I(-)/I(3)(-) redox reaction based on PEDOT film were investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy and Cyclic Voltammetry, respectively. The performance of the DSSCs containing the PEDOT coated electrode was compared with sputtered-Pt electrode. We found that the root mean square roughness decreases and conductivity increases as the molar ratio of imidazole (Im)/EDOT in the PEDOT film increases. The DSSC containing the PEDOT coated on fluorine doped tin oxide glass with Im/EDOT molar ratio of 2.0, showed a conversion efficiency of 7.44% compared to that with sputtered-Pt electrode (7.77%). The high photocurrents were attributed to the large effective Surface area of the electrode material resulting in good catalytic properties for T(3) reduction. Therefore, the incorporation of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in the PEDOT film, coated on various substrates was also investigated. The DSSC containing the PEDOT films with 0.6 wt.% of MWCNT on stainless steel as counter electrode had the best cell performance of 8.08% with short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage and fill factor of 17.00 mA cm(-2), 720 mV and 0.66, respectively. Here, we study the effects of nanomorphological changes on the performance of polymer solar cells using blended films of poly[9,9'-dioctyl-fluorene-co-bithiophene] (F8T2) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Different weight ratios of the F8T2 and PCBM blends in various solvents were studied at different annealing temperatures. The morphology of the films seems to be a strong function of the processing conditions. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the photovoltaic devices has improved significantly from 0.34% to 2.14% under air mass 1.5 simulated solar illumination (100 mW cm(-2)), which could be attributed to the nanomorphological changes in the films.Item type:Item, Efficient bilayer polymer solar cells possessing planar mixed-heterojunction structures(2010) ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Li, Kuang-Chieh ;Kekuda, Dhananjay ;Padhy, Hari HaraLin, Hong-CheuWe have investigated the influence of thermal annealing on the performance of polymer bilayer solar cell devices incorporating poly{2,6-(4,4-bis[2-ethylhexyl]-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b'] dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)} (PCPDTTBT) as the donor and two kinds of fullerenes (C(60), C(70)) as acceptors. The higher absorption of C(70) increased the external quantum efficiency in the spectral range 400-600 nm. We observed morphological changes of the polymer films when the pre-annealing temperature was near the crystalline temperature (T(c), 207 degrees C). These nanostructural transformations resulted in a modified interfacial morphology of the donor phases and, therefore, greatly influenced the device performance. Post-annealing treatment reorganized the interface between the donor and acceptor phases, leading to better contact. The highest power conversion efficiency (2.85%) was obtained when we performed device pre- and post-annealing both at 200 degrees C for 30 min; the open-circuit voltage was 0.69 V and the short-circuit current was 8.42 mA cm(-2).Item type:Item, Efficient bulk heterojunction solar cells based on a low-bandgap polyfluorene copolymers and fullerene derivatives(2009-09-01) ;Huang, Jen-Hsien ;Li, Kuang-Chieh ;Wei, Hung-Yu ;Chen, Po-YenLin, Lu-YinA low-bandgap polymer (PF-PThCVPTZ) consisted of fluorene and phenothiazine was designed and synthesized. With the donor-acceptor segment, the partial charge transfer can be built in the polymer backbone leading to a wide absorbance. The absorption spectrum of PF-PThCVPTZ exhibits a peak at 510 nm and an absorption onset at 645 nm in the visible range. As blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as an electron acceptor, narrow bandgap PF-PThCVPTZ as electron donor shows significant solar cell performance. Under AM 1.5 G, 100 mA/cm(2) illumination, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.85% was recorded, with a short circuit current (J(SC)) of 5.37 mA/cm(2), an open circuit voltage (V(OC)) of 0.80 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 43.0%.
