The display design was augmented with the knowledge that there is an invariant flight trajectory (formed by the relationship between altitude and velocity) for every flight, from takeoff to landing. 56 participants were randomly assigned to the situation-augmented display or a conventional display condition to work on 4 (number of abnormalities) x 2 (noise level) UAV monitoring tasks three times. Results showed that the effects of situation-augmented display on flight completion time and time to detect abnormalities were robust under various workload conditions, but error rate and perceived mental workload were unaffected by the display type. Results suggest that the UAV monitoring task is extremely difficult, and that display devices providing high-level situation-awareness may improve operator monitoring performance.Item type:Item, Effects of Argument Scaffolding and Source Credibility on Science Text Comprehension(2014-04-03) ;Lin, Tzu-Jung ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Anderson, Richard C. ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThis study investigated the effects of argument scaffolding and source credibility on science text comprehension. Eighty-seven college students were randomly assigned to an argument scaffolding activity, or no scaffolding, and read 2 science texts, attributed to a high- or a low-credibility source. The argument-scaffolding group recalled less text-based information but generated more knowledge-based inferences than did the no-scaffolding group. High source credibility enhanced readers' text-based recall but had little effect on knowledge-based inferences or situation models. Overall, results suggest that argumentation facilitates deeper text comprehension and better argument understanding, while at the same time reducing the effect of source credibility on text processing.Item type:Item, Effects of Argumentation method and Argument stance on knowledge enquiry skills(2012) ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityItem type:Item, Effects of conceptual combination training on technological imagination(2016-07-01) ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Hung, Yu-Chuan ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityItem type:Item, Effects of location and presentation format of the secondary task on attentional boost effect(2016-07-01) ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Fan, Ying-Fang ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityItem type:Item, Learning and innovation in small and medium enterprises(2010) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Wang, Yau-De ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;管理科學系工業工程與管理學系Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between knowledge acquisition, knowledge absorptive capacity, and innovation performance in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach - Questionnaire data were collected from research and development (R&D) managers or owners of 49 SMEs of the bicycle industry in Taiwan. The questionnaire was designed to measure variables including knowledge absorptive capacity, knowledge acquisition of company, technical and industrial experiences of owner's and the R&D staff, innovation performance measures, and control variables. Findings - The results show that the depth and the breadth of its owner's technical and industrial experiences best explained absorptive capacity of an SME. In turn, the absorptive capacity and the knowledge acquisition activities of an SME affect its innovation performance. Research limitations/implications - The findings show that, first, SME owners' technical and industrial experiences are contributing factors to their companies' knowledge absorptive capacity; second, instead of R&D investment, SME personnel's scientific knowledge collection and diversity of knowledge sources contribute to innovation performance of companies. Because the data were limited to bicycle industry, future studies need to validate these findings in the SMEs of other industries. Originality/value - The value of the paper lies in the fact that SME owner's and its personnel's contributions to company's knowledge absorptive capacity and the concomitant effects of knowledge acquisition and knowledge absorption capacity on a firm's innovation performance are two issues seldom addressed in previous studies.Item type:Item, Person-project fit and R&D performance: A case study of industrial technology research institute of Taiwan(2007-06-01) ;Cheng, Sen-Hao ;Wang, Yau-De ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Huang, Yung-Chang管理科學系This study examined the relation between the research and development (R&D) performance and the fit between a researcher's cognitive type and the task demand of the project that was implied in Wang, Wu & Horng's (1999) study. Three hundred and eighteen research projects completed by 205 project leaders in the 3 years were classified into Unsworth's four creativity types along two dimensions: (1) whether the research addressed an open- or closed-ended problem and (2) whether the project was assigned or actively sought by the researcher. Each researcher's personal traits were assessed using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Kirton's Adaptor-Innovator Scale (KAI). Results show that researchers with a conforming, feeling, or judging-type cognition performed better with assigned projects for solving closed problems. Those with an originality and intuitive-type cognition performed better on self-initiated projects for solving open-ended problems. Researchers with sensing-type cognition performed better with assigned projects for solving open-ended questions. Thus, a careful match between a researcher's cognitive type and the task demand of project is important for R&D management.Item type:Item, THE EFFECT OF AMOUNT AND TANGIBILITY OF ENDOWMENT AND CERTAINTY OF RECIPIENTS ON SELFISHNESS IN A MODIFIED DICTATOR GAME(2014-06-01) ;Chang, Shao-Chuan ;Lin, Li-Yun ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Wang, Yau-De交大名義發表Taiwanese college students (N = 101) participated in the study to examine the effects of the amount of an endowment, the tangibility of an endowment, and the certainty of the recipient on selfishness in a modified dictator game. Results showed that dictators were more selfish when allocating tangible (money) than less tangible (honor credits) endowments. Selfishness was higher when large amounts of money were involved. The certainty of the recipient was manipulated by whether the recipient was chosen and announced before or after the decision. Unexpectedly, participants were more self-interested in the certain-recipient condition than in the uncertain-recipient condition. In the honor condition, the amount of an endowment and the certainty of the recipient did not affect participants\' allocations.Item type:Item, The Effects of Argument Stance on Scientific Knowledge Inquiry Skills(2013-11-01) ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Lu, Po-Hui ;Chen, Pei-Hua ;Hou, Shih-Huan管理科學系This study investigates the effects of argument stance on knowledge inquiry skills. Sixty-two participants were assigned to three argument stance conditions (proponent, opponent, or control) to receive scaffolded argumentation practice on two science issues in random order. After the argumentation treatment, participants were asked to write down their own opinions regarding the claim. Their responses were analysed according to argument structure, argument content, methods of refutation, and number of new propositions. Results revealed that taking a proponent's stance increased the use of evidence in argumentation, while taking an opponent's stance enhanced both the use of evidence and alternative-based refutations to the claim, number of falsifications, and number of new propositions. This implies that arguing from an opponent's stance may increase the search for multiple causes behind observed phenomena and the need for evidence, thereby alleviating the confirmation bias in thinking.Item type:Item, The effects of the increment asymmetry in payoff, and risk cost on the centipede game(2012-01-01) ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Chou, Shih-Pao ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityItem type:Item, "The effects of the increment asymmetry in payoff, and risk cost on the centipede game"(2012-01-01) ;Horng, Ruey-Yun ;Chou, Shih-Pao ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung University
