Numerous signal processing questions regarding the negative consequences and characteristic respiration in a long-term sitting posture remain unanswered. This study recruited 50 individuals with high-risk and low-risk IGD (HIGD and LIGD); these participants were taught to perform a specific respiration during game-film stimuli. The instantaneous frequencies on abdominal movement (f(DF)) were calculated with ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). The difference value (f(DF)) between rest and stimulus statuses was calculated and found that HIGD showed f(DF) values of 0.060 during positive stimuli and 0.055 during negative stimuli before the exercise but 0.020 and 0.016, respectively, after the exercise. However, the f(DF) value for those with LIGD during negative stimuli before the exercise was 0.013, and it increased to 0.025 after the exercise. This is the first approach to IGD discrimination toward abdominal response with EEMD.Item type:Item, A NOVEL INDEX OF PHOTOPLETHYSMOGRAPHY BY USING INSTANTANEOUS PULSE RATE VARIABILITY DURING NON-STATIONARY CONDITION(2015) ;Lin, Pei-Chen ;Huang, Po-Hsun ;Chang, Chia-Chi ;Hsu, Hung-YiHsiao, Tzu-ChienHeart rate variability (HRV) and pulse rate variability (PRV) have been widely used as an automatic nervous system (ANS) activities observation. Based on the timescale limitation of heart beat (for HRV) and pulse waveform (for PRV), one method of instantaneous pulse rate variability (iPRV) with photoplethysmography (PPG) had been proposed as a HRV and PRV surrogate during non-stationary condition in frequency domain. In this paper, the examination in time-domain PPG during passive leg raise (PLR) trial was studied. The 24 subjects pre-experiment resulted that iPRV and HRV are positive correlation (r-value = 0.680 +/- 0.099 in baseline; r-value = 0.688 +/- 0.096 in PLR). Furthermore, the iPRV containing much complex intrinsic components on higher frequency bands provides more intrinsic cardiovascular information for further assessment. This proposed examination in time-domain PPG is the possible leading way to more useful indicator for healthcare application.Item type:Item, A Novel Multivariate Analysis Method with Noise Reduction(2009) ;Chang, Shu-Hao ;Chiou, Yu-Jen ;Yu, Chun ;Lin, Chii-WannHsiao, Tzu-ChienIn this paper, we develop a novel Partial Regularized Least Squares (PRLS) method which combined regularization algorithm with Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis for noise reduction application. In general, Least Squares and PLS fall into an overfitting problem with ill-posed condition. It means that some feature selections make the training data to have better adaptability to the model, but the quality of prediction would be poorly compared to the training data for the testing information. We usually expected that the selected model should have consistent predicted result between the training data and testing data. In order to evaluate the performance of PRLS method, we generate two simulation data, i.e. cosine waveform and 8th polynomial waveform with Gaussian distribution noisy for calculating two values, i.e. Correlation Coefficient value (RR value) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for testing. The results show that the RR value of PRLS is higher than PLS's at increasing noise-to-signal ratio. As well the RMSE of PRLS is lower than PLS's at same S/N ratio. We also show that the PRLS approximates to the desired output at calibration. It can be applied in real-world noise reduction in the future.Item type:Item, Abdominal Breathing by Using an Intelligent Tutoring System(2015-01-01) ;Chen, Ya-Chen ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceWith the growing number of aging population, abdominal breathing (AB) as a health-promoting exercise has claimed wide human interest. Especially in Asia, AB becomes a friendly practice in traditional medicine, for instance, a gentle spiritual exercise of Tai Chi Chuan (), a combination of breathing exercise, relaxation and meditation of Chi Kung (), and different yoga-type breathing patterns. Most of experienced mentors advise learners memorizing AB step by step. However, it is hard to retrieve for learners to practice AB by themselves. Within this paper, we present an iso-volume maneuver (IVM) tutoring system based on learning by doing for subjects to learn AB. During the IVM, subjects focus on the abdominal wall movement, and remember the AB pattern by observing respiratory signals in this system. The IVM tutoring system also measures the respiratory signals by respiratory inductive plethysmography and calculates the energy proportion of abdominal wall movement signals (E-awm) to evaluate the performance of AB learning. The higher E-awm represents the more correct practicing AB. A 50 subjects\' experiment which divided subjects into IVM and non-IVM groups (learning AB with step by step instructions) is introduced in this study. Results indicate that IVM group has significant higher E-awm (59.5 +/- 6.0%) than the non-IVM group (51.6 +/- 10.4%). Therefore, the IVM group performs better AB than the non-IVM group. We conclude that the IVM tutoring system is efficient for individual to learn AB.Item type:Item, Advanced Plasmonic Biosensing Devices and Automation Systems for Disease Diagnostic and Drug Screening Applications(2008-01-01) ;Chiu, Nan-Fu ;Wey, Tzuu-Shaang ;Yu, Chun ;Hsiao, Tzu-ChienLin, Chii-WannBio-plasmonics is proposed for the research and development of novel devices, which use biomolecules as a part of the plasmon oscillation system to actively interact with nano/micro structure. We have reported a novel design of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) device and system, which uses alternative dielectric layers to enhance the SPR signal quality and modulate its resonant position. The use of biomolecular thin film, such as DNAs or Proteins, in this design can result in resonant condition of wavelength changes and thus can be detected by using nano-grating in the scattering mode with ehanced feature due to resonance. According to our calculation, it can provide ultra sensitivity system (dLx/dn) of 10(8) for biosensor applications. The fundamental SPR principle and extended application of these fundamental principles and novel devices, including screening and diagnosis, will be discussed SPR-system to control is the ability. SPR-system has the ability to detect, in near real-time, the concentration of a target analyte and biosensing is viewed as a key application domain for this new technology.Item type:Item, Affective Pattern Analysis of Image in Frequency Domain Using the Hilbert-Huang Transform(2012) ;Lee, Poming ;Tsui, Wei-Hsuan ;Teng, Yun ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien資訊工程學系This study applied Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) on spatial-frequency analysis on affective picture classification. The obtained results demonstrate the existence of affective characteristics in spatial-frequency domain of an image, and also found the horizontal visual stimulations are slightly more effective than vertical visual stimulation on emotion elicitation in regard to valence. Affective image classification is a task aims on classifying images based on their affective characteristics of inducing human emotions. This study achieves the task by using Learning Classifier System (LCS) and spatial-frequency features. The model built by using LCS achieves Area Under Curve (AUC) = 0.91 and accuracy rate over 86%. The result of the LCS is compared with other traditional machine-learning algorithms (e.g., Radial-Basis Function Network (RBF Network)) that are normally used in classification tasks. The study presents user-independent results which indicate that the horizontal visual stimulations contribute more to the emotion elicitation than the vertical visual stimulation.Item type:Item, Better Thoracoabdominal Synchrony in Abdominal Breathing: Evidence From Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition-Based Lissajous Figure Analysis(2015-04-01) ;Chen, Ya-Chen ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Chen, Jin-Long ;分子醫學與生物工程研究所資訊工程學系Abdominal breathing (AB) is believed to be a healthier pattern of breathing than thoracic breathing (TB). However, the objective evidence is scanty. Thoracoabdominal synchrony could be evaluated by calculating the phase angle between rib cage and abdomen motion in the Lissajous figure. A lesser phase angle indicates a better thoracoabdominal synchrony. Complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) was recently developed to extract the main component in the nonlinear and non-stationary signals. This study was designed to compare the thoracoabdominal synchrony between AB and TB via a CEEMD-based Lissajous figure analysis. Twenty-nine healthy subjects [24 males and 5 females; age 22 (21-23) years, median (interquartile range)] were recruited to receive simultaneous respiratory inductive plethysmography recording of rib cage and abdomen motion during AB and TB respectively. The main components of rib cage and abdomen motion were extracted by CEEMD. These main components were used to plot the Lissajous figure and calculate the phase angle. Compared with TB, AB revealed a significant decrease (P < 0.001) in phase angle [AB 12.13 (8.70-15.76)degrees vs. TB 22.56 (17.59-26.35)degrees]. In conclusion, AB assumes a better thoracoabdominal synchrony than TB. This finding might help to explain why AB is a healthier pattern of breathing. In addition, the CEEMD-based Lissajous figure analysis could be an effective method for the evaluation of thoracoabdominal synchrony.Item type:Item, Coefficient of Variation of Electrocardiographic R-R Intervals in Healthy Subjects and Stroke Patients(2012) ;Hsu, Hung-Yi ;Chang, Chia-Chi ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Chiang, Yi-Ying資訊工程學系Item type:Item, Concurrent sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal in hyperthyroidism: Evidence from detrended fluctuation analysis of heart rate variability(2010-05-01) ;Chen, Jin-Long ;Shiau, Yuo-Hsien ;Tseng, Yin-Jiun ;Chiu, Hung-WenHsiao, Tzu-ChienDespite many previous Studies on the association between hyperthyroidism and the hyperadrenergic state, controversies still exist. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is a well recognized method in the nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), and it has physiological significance related to the autonomic nervous system. In particular, an increased short-term scaling exponent alpha 1 calculated from DFA is associated with both increased sympathetic activity and decreased vagal activity. No study has investigated the DFA of HRV in hyperthyroidism. This study was designed to assess the sympathovagal balance in hyperthyroidism. We performed the DFA along with the linear analysis of HRV in 36 hyperthyroid Graves' disease patients (32 females and 4 males; age 30 +/- 1 years, means +/- SE) and 36 normal controls matched by sex, age and body mass index. Compared with the normal controls, the hyperthyroid patients revealed a significant increase (P < 0.001) in alpha 1 (hyperthyroid 1.28 +/- 0.04 versus control 0.91 +/- 0.02), long-term scaling exponent alpha 2 (1.05 +/- 0.02 versus 0.90 +/- 0.01), overall scaling exponent alpha (1.11 +/- 0.02 versus 0.89 +/- 0.01), low frequency power in normalized units (LF%) and the ratio of low frequency power to high frequency power (LF/HF); and a significant decrease (P < 0.001) in the standard deviation of the R-R intervals (SDNN) and high frequency power (HF). In conclusion, hyperthyroidism is characterized by concurrent sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal. This sympathovagal imbalance state in hyperthyroidism helps to explain the higher prevalence of atrial fibrillation and exercise intolerance among hyperthyroid patients. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. For the need of exploring and investigating a novel computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction method, custom-built micro-CT system offers a corresponding laboratory research environment. To develop a controllable program capable of incorporating with different devices efficiently, we use Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW), a graphical programming language, as our programming environment to implement micro-CT system on vertical rotary gantry. We scanned and reconstructed the 360 projections derived from full 360 degrees scan with angular stepping of 1 degrees. Total scan time is about 9.1 minutes. We will combine micro fluorescence tomography (micro-FT) and micro-CT on uni-platform in the future.Item type:Item, Development of Limited-Angle Iterative Reconstruction Algorithms with Context Encoder-Based Sinogram Completion for Micro-CT Applications(2018-12-01) ;Jin, Shih-Chun ;Hsieh, Chia-Jui ;Chen, Jyh-Cheng ;Tu, Shih-HuanChen, Ya-ChenLimited-angle iterative reconstruction (LAIR) reduces the radiation dose required for computed tomography (CT) imaging by decreasing the range of the projection angle. We developed an image-quality-based stopping-criteria method with a flexible and innovative instrument design that, when combined with LAIR, provides the image quality of a conventional CT system. This study describes the construction of different scan acquisition protocols for micro-CT system applications. Fully-sampled Feldkamp (FDK)-reconstructed images were used as references for comparison to assess the image quality produced by these tested protocols. The insufficient portions of a sinogram were inpainted by applying a context encoder (CE), a type of generative adversarial network, to the LAIR process. The context image was passed through an encoder to identify features that were connected to the decoder using a channel-wise fully-connected layer. Our results evidence the excellent performance of this novel approach. Even when we reduce the radiation dose by 1/4, the iterative-based LAIR improved the full-width half-maximum, contrast-to-noise and signal-to-noise ratios by 20% to 40% compared to a fully-sampled FDK-based reconstruction. Our data support that this CE-based sinogram completion method enhances the efficacy and efficiency of LAIR and that would allow feasibility of limited angle reconstruction.Item type:Item, Education system integration in cross-disciplinary with colleges - Virtual biomedical instrument (VBI) for example(2008-06-01) ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Chang, Chia-Chi ;Liu, Chien-Sheng ;Lin, Chii-WannWang, Chih-YuDue to the rapid development of computer science, software, and biomedical engineering, many clinical diagnosis instruments and control system improved accordingly. The minimization and practicality of sensors, as well as the efficiency and stability of computers make simulation control system in medical instruments become the most important part of developing items. The relevant subject of course, virtual biomedical instrumentations (VBI), which combined with computer science, electrical engineering, and medical science, has become a major developing course in biomedical education. Cross-disciplinary research needs experts in different areas and most cross-disciplinary schools cannot afford it. So it requires integration and cooperation between schools. To address this issue, a graduated course has been designed to provide an opportunity for all professions in each field to discuss and share their resources on an e-learning platform. With the progress of the project, VBI course integrates biomedical education resources from north to south colleges to reduce the request of manpower for cross-disciplinary course of biomedical. In addition, VBI courses initiate the cooperation between academic community and industry.Item type:Item, Electrical properties of single and multiple poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) nanowires for sensing nitric oxide gas(2009-04-27) ;Lu, Hui-Hsin ;Lin, Chia-Yu ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Fang, Yueh-YuanHo, Kuo-ChuanThe electrical properties of conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), nanowires were studied to develop nitric oxide (NO) gas sensors with low working temperatures. A nanowire with a diameter of 300 nm was fabricated using dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) across a 55 mu m gap between a pair of electrodes. The electrical properties of single or multiple PEDOT nanowires were examined by plotting the current-voltage (I-V) curves in the range -3 V to +3 V at temperatures between 298 K and 393 K. The conductance of parallel wires was normalized with respect to the dimensions of the fabricated nanowires. The single nanowire exhibited nonlinear conductance associated with hysteresis but multiple wires did not. The currents increased with the temperature and the I-V characteristics were consistent with the power lawG(T)alpha T(alpha) with alpha similar to 5.14 and 5.43. The responses to NO were highly linear and reproducible, indicating that sensing using PEDOT nanowires was reliable with a minimal concentration of NO of 10 ppm. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. People use internet for variety purposes, and over one billion users played computer games, but some of them addicted to internet or online game which was called Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). IGD was defined and suggested investigating through standard criteria proposed by DSM-5. The symptoms of IGD include preoccupation with online activity, withdrawal, tolerance, and escape or relief from a negative mood. Some studies and scales considered that emotion was one feature or assessment of internet addiction (IA). Emotion brings psychological and physiological information of IGD. This study aimed to investigate emotional responses of IGD. Fifty college subjects in Taiwan were recruited and participated in an emotional induced experiment. IGD gamers reported different emotional intensity and expressed different autonomic nervous activity (from HRV) than non-IGD gamers when watching online game films. The emotional feature of IGD is worthy to be further studied to assist the development of research and applications.Item type:Item, Fabrication of silicon dioxide nano array for bio-mimicking of molecular interactions(2008-01-01) ;Lu, Hui-Hsin ;Lin, Chii-Wann ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Lee, Chih-KungHsu, Su-MingWe employed atomic force microscopy (AFM) with bias control to fabricate oxided nanopatterns on silicon surface with feature size down to 50nm. The relationship of silicon dioxide nanopattems against humidity was studied and then the optimal parameter was used to make oxide nanoarry for interaction of biotin and streptavidin. The scanning function of AFM was utilized to verify the different height of biomolecules. According to our experimental results, using nano biochip of silicon dioxide can decrease the monitoring scale to nanometer and can be the nano-platform for monitoring the behavior of biomolecular interaction. We anticipate mimicking the correlation of single molecular behavior and an array of biomolecular behavior to understand the coincidence of them.Item type:Item, Fibreoptic fluorescence spectroscopy for monitoring fish freshness(2012) ;Wu, Chi-Wu ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Chu, Shou-Chia ;Hu, Hung-HsiChen, Jyh-ChengIn this study, a portable Y-type fibreoptic fluorescence spectroscopy measurement system was used to evaluate the freshness of eight cobias (Rachycentron canadum). The results showed that the ratio of fluorescent intensity, which F-480 nm/Fexci+50 nm was belong with the range of collagen type I and type V characteristic spectra, was positive correlated to the frozen time by hours. It was a strong approach to be a potential index for differentiating the fish freshness during delivery process. Besides, the different pattern results of dorsum and abdomen were shown in this study. In further, fibreoptic fluorescence spectroscopy could be a way not only to measure and quantify the freshness of different fish body but also to verify the level of taste.Item type:Item, Fluorescence Intrinsic Characterization of Excitation-Emission Matrix Using Multi-Dimensional Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition(2013-11-01) ;Chang, Chi-Ying ;Chang, Chia-Chi ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;分子醫學與生物工程研究所資訊工程學系Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy is a noninvasive method for tissue diagnosis and has become important in clinical use. However, the intrinsic characterization of EEM fluorescence remains unclear. Photobleaching and the complexity of the chemical compounds make it difficult to distinguish individual compounds due to overlapping features. Conventional studies use principal component analysis (PCA) for EEM fluorescence analysis, and the relationship between the EEM features extracted by PCA and diseases has been examined. The spectral features of different tissue constituents are not fully separable or clearly defined. Recently, a non-stationary method called multi-dimensional ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) was introduced; this method can extract the intrinsic oscillations on multiple spatial scales without loss of information. The aim of this study was to propose a fluorescence spectroscopy system for EEM measurements and to describe a method for extracting the intrinsic characteristics of EEM by MEEMD. The results indicate that, although PCA provides the principal factor for the spectral features associated with chemical compounds, MEEMD can provide additional intrinsic features with more reliable mapping of the chemical compounds. MEEMD has the potential to extract intrinsic fluorescence features and improve the detection of biochemical changes.Item type:Item, Frequency range extension of spectral analysis of pulse rate variability based on Hilbert-Huang transform(2014-04-01) ;Chang, Chia-Chi ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;Hsu, Hung-Yi ;資訊工程學系友訊交大聯合研發中心Heart rate variability (HRV) is a well-accepted indicator for neural regulatory mechanisms in cardiovascular circulation. Its spectrum analysis provides the powerful means of observing the modulation between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The timescale of HRV is limited by discrete beat-to-beat time intervals; therefore, the exploration region of frequency band of HRV spectrum is relatively narrow. It had been proved that pulse rate variability (PRV) is a surrogate measurement of HRV in most of the circumstances. Moreover, arterial pulse wave contains small oscillations resulting from complex regulation of cardiac pumping function and vascular tone at higher frequency range. This study proposed a novel instantaneous PRV (iPRV) measurement based on Hilbert-Huang transform. Fifteen healthy subjects participated in this study and received continuous blood pressure wave recording in supine and passive head-up tilt. The result showed that the very-high-frequency band (0.4-0.9 Hz) varied during head-up tilt and had strong correlation (r = 0.77) with high-frequency band and medium correlation (r = 0.643) with baroreflex sensitivity. The very-high-frequency band of iPRV helps for the exploration of non-stationary autoregulation and provides the non-stationary spectral evaluation of HRV without distortion or information loss.
