Item type:Item, A 1-V, 16.9 ppm/degrees C, 250 nA Switched-Capacitor CMOS Voltage Reference(2011-04-01) ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Huang, Hong-Wei ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringAn ultra low-power, precise voltage reference using a switched-capacitor technique in 0.35-mu m CMOS is presented in this paper. The temperature dependence of the carrier mobility and channel length modulation effect can be effectively minimized by using 3.3 and 5V N-type transistors to operate in the saturation and subthreshold regions, respectively. In place of resistors, a precise reference voltage with flexible trimming capability is achieved by using capacitors. When the supply voltage is 1 V and the temperature is 80 degrees C, the supply current is 250 nA. The line sensitivity is 0.76%/V; the PSRR is -41 dB at 100 Hz and -17 dB at 10 MHz. Moreover, the occupied die area is 0.049 mm(2).Item type:Item, A 80V Output Voltage Boost Converter with Low Voltage Ripple for Avalanche Photodiode(APD)(2011) ;Yang, Yao-Yi ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Huang, Tzu-Chi ;Lee, Yu-HueiWang, Shih-WeiThe Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) are widely used in a variety of optical application requiring high sensitivity, such as long-distance optical communication and optical distance measurement, because the APDs can detect the low level light. APDs accompanied with the Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA) are utilized on the receiver side in the communication system. The trend of integrating the active optical components faces the challenge of integrating different voltage levels. In general, the operation voltage of TIA is usually 1.8 V or 3.3 V. However, the APD requires a high reverse-biasing voltage of 40 V - 80 V. Therefore, a high conversation-ratio boost converter must be included to provide the high voltage to bias the APD. Besides, output voltage ripple must be minimized to decrease the influence on communication signals. Experimental results show the 80 V output voltage boosted from the input voltage of 2.5 V. The output voltage ripple is 2 mV under the condition of 1 mA load current.Item type:Item, A Battery-Free 217 nW Static Control Power Buck Converter for Wireless RF Energy Harvesting With alpha-Calibrated Dynamic On/Off Time and Adaptive Phase Lead Control(2012-04-01) ;Huang, Tzu-Chi ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Yang, Yao-Yi ;Lee, Yu-HueiKang, Yu-ChaiAbattery-free nano-power buck converter with a proposed dynamic on/off time (DOOT) control can achieve high conversion efficiency over a wide load range. The DOOT control can predict the on/off time at different input voltages without a power consuming zero current detection (ZCD) circuit, as well as suppress static power in idle periods. A smooth control circuit (SCC) is proposed to ensure the stable transition from the constant-current (CC) to the constant-voltage (CV) stage. Due to the external parasitic resistance of the Li-ion battery-pack system, the charger circuit switches from the CC to the CV stage without fully charging the cell. The BRC technique dynamically estimates the external resistance to extend the CC stage. The experimental results show that the period of the CC stage can be extended to 40% of that of the original design. The charging time is effectively reduced.Item type:Item, A Low-Dropout Regulator With Smooth Peak Current Control Topology for Overcurrent Protection(2010-06-01) ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Yang, Chih-Yu ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThe proposed low-dropout (LDO) regulator with a smooth peak current control (SPCC) circuit can be simultaneously controlled by using an error amplifier to regulate output voltage and a peak current controller as a means to limit its current level. The SPCC circuit can be switched smoothly between these two control mechanisms by detecting the information of load current and the dropout voltage. Measured results show that overcurrent protection can make the pass device operate as a current source while the load current exceed the peak current level. Moreover, the control mechanism can return to error amplifier control when load current becomes smaller than the limiting current, thus ensuring output voltage to be close to the rated value. Output voltage is stable and varies smaller than 15 mV when a 160 mA load current step or a 2 V supply voltage step is placed on this LDO regulator.Item type:Item, A novel precise step-shaped soft-start technique for integrated DC-DC converter(2007) ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Chuang, Yung-Chun ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringThe advantages of this novel precise step-shaped soft-start technique for integrated dc-dc converter are not only owning excellent constant peak current limiting capacity for any load conditions to diminish initial inrush current powerfully but also solving the over-voltage or drop-voltage problem during the changing between the start-up mode and normal operation. The negative voltage is generated by the inverting buck-boost converter, which is regulated by the high signal-to-noise ratio comparator. Moreover, the boost converter is utilized to provide the positive output voltage. The proposed switching converter uses the switch sequential to reduce the positive voltage ripple to about 5 mV with the proportional-integral (PI) compensator to guarantee good line and load-regulation. Simulation results show the positive output voltage is regulated to 5V and the negative output voltage is -7V for driving the AMOLED. When the load current is 25 mA and the ESR is 30m Omega, the output voltage ripples are equal to 5 mV and 11 mV for positive and negative voltages, respectively. Besides, the load and line regulations of positive output voltage are 0.24 mV/mA and 5 mV/V, respectively. The maximum efficiency is 88.5% when the input voltage is 4.5 V and the load current is 50mAItem type:Item, Adaptive frequency control technique for enhancing transient performance of DC-DC converters(2007) ;Huang, Hong-Wei ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;Kuo, Sy-Yen電控工程研究所An adaptive frequency control (AFC) technique is proposed for minimizing transient dropout voltage and response time of switching DC-DC converters. As we know, nonlinear fast-transient techniques with fixed switching frequency can effectively regulate the unstable output voltage back to steady-state within a short time. However, they suffer from oscillation problem because of large sourcing or sinking recovery current at output of error amplifier by fast transient circuit. Therefore, linear operation provided by AFC technique can dynamically and smoothly adjust the switching frequency, which is proportional to the output voltage variation, to regulate output voltage back to its steady-state value. In other words, AFC technique eliminates system and sub-harmonic oscillation scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate the transient dropout voltage is improved 37.8% when load current changes from 100 mA to 500 mA.Item type:Item, Adaptive Pole-Zero Position (APZP) Technique of Regulated Power Supply for Improving SNR(2008-11-01) ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThis paper proposes an adaptive pole-zero position (APZP) technique to achieve excellent transient response of de-de converters. The APZP technique triggers the two-step nonlinear control mechanism to speed up the transient response at the beginning of load variations. Before the output voltage is regulated back to its voltage level, the APZP technique merely functions as a linear control method to regulate output voltage in order to ensure the stability of the system. Fast transient response time, low output ripples, and stable transient operation are achieved at the same time by the proposed APZP technique. Experimental results in the UMC 0.18-mu m, process show that the transient undershoot/overshoot voltage and the recovery time do not exceed 48 mV and 10 mu s, respectively. Compared with conventional design without any fast: transient technique, the performances of overshoot voltage and recovery time are enhanced by 37.2% and 77.8%. With the APZP technique, the performance of dc-dc converters is improved significantly.Item type:Item, An Energy-Recycling (ER) Technique for Field Color Sequential LCD Backlight Driving(2009) ;Huang, Ming-Hsin ;Tsai, Yueh-Chang ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Chen, Ke-Horng電控工程研究所An energy-recycling (ER) technique has been proposed to implement high power conversion efficiency and low cost solution of field color sequential (FCS) LEDs backlight driving. One recycling capacitor C(R) and one power-transistor M(R) are added to synchronous boost converter to compose the ER function. When the output voltage of FCS-LEDs backlight driver switches from 40V to 26V for driving RGB LEDs during related time interval, ER technique stops to boost input voltage and switches to recycle energy from output terminal to the recycling capacitor CR. Thus, the output voltage can be rapidly switched between two different voltage levels with minimum power losses. The proposed ER technique has been fabricated by TSMC 40V BCD process. The experimental results demonstrate fast and efficient output voltage tracking performance is achieved by the proposed ER technique.Item type:Item, Boost DC-DC Converter with Charge-Recycling (CR) and Fast Reference Tracking (FRT) Techniques for High-Efficiency and Low-Cost LED Driver(2008) ;Hsieh, Chun-Yu ;Chen, Ke-Horng ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringA charge-recycling (CR) technique and fast reference tracking (DRT) are proposed for implementing a high efficiency and low cost RGB backlight module in color sequential notebook computers' display. A RGB LED driver composed of an asynchronous 1.5MHz DC/DC boost converter with FRT and CR techniques was fabricated in TSMC 0.25 mu m BCD 40V to generate 17V for 6-series red LEDs or 21V for 6-series green, or blue LEDs. The CR technique stores extra energy at the output node when the output voltage is switched from low to high voltage level and releases the reserved energy back to the output node at next period. Furthermore, the output voltage can be rapidly switched between two different voltage levels by FRT technique without wasting much power owing to the CR technique.
