Item type:Item, A cost effective approach to establish benchmark for automatic workpiece classification systems(2002-06-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Hsia, TC ;Wu, MC ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe utility of an automatic workpiece classification system depends primarily on the extent to which its classification results are consistent with users' judgments. Thus to evaluate the effectiveness of an automatic classification system it is necessary to establish classification benchmarks based on users' judgments. Such benchmarks are typically established by having subjects perform pair comparisons of all workpieces in a set of sample workpieces. The result of such comparisons is called a full-data classification. However, when the number of sample workpieces is very large, such exhaustive comparisons become impractical. This paper proposes a more efficient method, called lean-data classification, in which data on some pair comparison are used to infer the complete pair comparison results. The proposed method has been verified by using a set of 36 sample workpieces. The results revealed that the method could produce a classification that was 78% consistent with the full-data classification while using only 40% of the total data.Item type:Item, A flexible classification method for evaluating the utility of automated workpiece classification system(1997) ;Hsu, SH ;Hsia, TC ;Wu, MC ;交大名義發表工業工程與管理學系In group technology, workpieces are categorised into families according to their similarity in design or manufacturing, attributes. This categorisation can eliminate design duplication and facilitate the production of workpieces. Much effort has been focused on the development of automated workpiece classification systems. However it is difficult to evaluate the utility of such systems. The objective of this study was to develop a benchmark classification system based on global shape information for. use in evaluating the utility of workpiece classification systems. A classification system has a high level of utility if its classification scheme is consistent with users perceptual judgement of the similarity between workpiece shapes. Hence, in the proposed method, the consistency between a classification system and users' perceptual judgements is used as an index of the utility of the system. The proposed benchmark classification has two salient characteristics: 1. It is user-oriented, because it is based or? users' judgements concerning the similarity of the global shape of workpieces. 2. It is flexible, allowing users to adjust the criteria of similarity applied in the automated workpiece classification. The development of this classification consisted of three steps. 1. Gathering row data on global shape similarity from a group of representative users and modelling the data by fuzzy numbers. 2. Developing benchmark classification for various similarity criteria by rising fuzzy, clustering analysis. 3. Developing indices for evaluating the appropriate number of workpiece categories and homogeneity within each group. The applicability of the benchmark classification system in evaluating the utility of automated workpiece classification systems was examined.Item type:Item, A hierarchical case knowledge acquisition method for troubleshooting(2003) ;Wang, SL ;Hsu, SH ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe authors propose a Hierarchical Case-based Knowledge Acquisition Method (HCBKA) based on Case-based Reasoning (CBR). The proposed KA method is made LIP of two components: a knowledge elicitation part in which Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) techniques are applied to extract application-specific knowledge, and a knowledge organization part in which a case-based algorithm, hierarchical clustering, and ontology techniques are integrated to classify and encode case knowledge.Item type:Item, A novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on dual-ARROW structures for sensing applications(2005-12-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Huang, YT ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsA novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on dual antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs) for sensing is proposed. By adjusting the degree of structural symmetry to control the coupling behavior of the dual ARROW, an interferometric sensor without any bending structure can be realized. Operating principles and simulation characteristics of the device are discussed in detail. The refractive-index detection limit of the order of 10(-5) is achieved.Item type:Item, A semantic differential study of designers' and users' product form perception(2000-04-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Chuang, MC ;Chang, CC ;應用藝術研究所工業工程與管理學系This study investigated the differences in the product form perception of designers and users. The semantic differential (SD) method was employed to examine the relationship between the subjects' evaluation of telephone samples and form design elements. The authors used 14 image-word pairs for the evaluation of telephone design. The format for a measurement scale was constructed by a projection method in order to extract design attributes for an SD test. Twenty-four real telephone samples were presented to 40 subjects (20 designers and 20 users) for subjective evaluation. Multivariate analyses were performed to analyze the subject's perceptions and to build conceptual models for telephone design. The result revealed that many differences exist between designers' and users' perceptions of the same real objects and their interpretations of the same image-words. Users are not clear regarding the meaning of the image-words. Moreover, they are very concerned about whether a telephone looks new. Designers tend to value telephone samples with an elegant style while users prefer modern and sleek designs. The conceptual models of the two subject groups are made up of different components. Creative, mature, delicate design images play a greater role in affecting the designers' preference while the users' preference is affected mainly by images of delicacy. The implications of differences in preference and the relationship between image-word and actual design elements for the two subject groups are discussed. Relevance to industry It is the users' needs and preferences, not those of the designers, that should be taken into consideration during the product design process. Due to the fact that many differences exist between designers and users, it is a challenge for designers to transfer the consumer's needs into technical and design specifications. Quantitative data on the relationship between design elements and user evaluations is useful to product designers and managers in formulating design strategies. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. In classifying parts based on their global shapes, the similarity of parts has to be manually measured by performing pair comparison. The cost of exhaustively performing pair comparison is quite high when the number of parts to be grouped is large. This paper proposes interval intersection, a novel similarity inference method that effectively infers the pair-comparison data from a set of known data. Justified by empirical experiments, the proposed method outperforms the previous methods when 31% or more of data is known.Item type:Item, A Web-based CBR knowledge management system for PC troubleshooting(2004-04-01) ;Wang, SL ;Hsu, SH ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementUsing case-based reasoning (CBR), the authors integrate the techniques of cognitive task analysis (CTA), hierarchical clustering and ontology and propose a Web-based CBR knowledge management (KM) system for investigating the construction of a KM system with multiple information techniques to support KM activity in industry. The maintenance service centres of a computer company are used as an example to illustrate extracting the maintenance knowledge necessary to construct a PC troubleshooting KM system. The effectiveness of applying a Web-based CBR KM system to support KM activities in the KM life cycle is subjected to practical verification.Item type:Item, Age differences in remote pointing performance(1997-10-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Huang, CC ;Tsuang, YH ;Sun, JS工業工程與管理學系The purpose of this study was to investigate age differences in remote pointing movements. The subjects were recruited from three age groups (ages 18-22 yr., 40-50 yr., and 60-70 yr., with 9 men and 9 women in each group). They were required to perform cursor-positioning tasks using a remote pointing device, in which the dependent measures were the time taken to reposition the cursor and the accuracy of subjects' movement trajectories. The movement time was further separated into two components, First Submovement duration and Adjustment Submovement duration. Analysis indicated that age groups showed reduced performance on remote pointing. Moreover, remote positioning movement for the young-adult group was mostly completed in their First Submovement phase, while the elderly subjects spent most of their movement time on the Adjustment Submovement phase. These results support the proposition that different age groups exhibit different kinds of movement patterns.Item type:Item, Age-related differences in remote pointing performance(1997) ;Hsu, SH ;Huang, CC ;Tsuang, YH ;Sun, JS交大名義發表The present study investigated age-related differences in remote pointing performance. Three age groups (i.e., the Young adult, Middle-aged, and Elderly) performed cursor positioning tasks by using a remote pointing device. The time taken to reposition the cursor was collected. The result showed that age groups had differences in movement time. Further analysis on the submovement duration times showed that movement time for the Young-adult group was mostly travel time, while the Elderly subjects spent most of their movement time on fine adjustment. This study supports the proposition that different age groups exhibit different kinds of movement patterns.Item type:Item, An efficient method for creating benchmark classifications for automatic workpiece classification systems(1998) ;Hsu, SH ;Hsia, TC ;Wu, MC ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe usefulness of an automatic workpiece classification system depends primarily on the extent to tt which its classification results are consistent with users judgements. For each feature, there are several levels of implementation, which is corresponded to different levels of benefit as well as cost. Therefore, a trade-off decision for determining appropriate levels of implementation is very important, yet has been rarely studied in literature. This paper presents an approach to solve the trade-off decision problem. This approach applies the neural network technique and develops a genetic algorithm to optimize the design of computer games. By this approach, a near-optimal design alternative can be identified in a timely fashion. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Sixteen frequent-buyers of computer games identified 39 design features that appeal to buyers by contrasting different versions of Pacman games. Twenty-eight versions of Pacman were then evaluated in terms of the identified design features by 45 participants ( 27 male and 18 female college students). Qnet2000 neural network software was used to determine the relative importance of these design features. The results indicated that the top 10 most important design features could account for more than 50% of "perceived fun" among these 39 design features. The feature of avatar is important to game-buyers, yet not revealed in previous player-oriented studies. Moreover, six design factors underlying the 39 features were identified through factor analysis. These factors included "novelty and powerfulness," "appealing presentation," "interactivity," "challenging," "sense of control," and " rewarding," and could account for 54% of total variance. Among these six factors, appealing presentation has not been emphasized by player-oriented research. Implications of the findings were discussed.Item type:Item, Differential gain and buildup dynamics of self-starting Kerr lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser without an internal aperture(1997-08-01) ;Juang, DG ;Chen, YC ;Hsu, SH ;Lin, KHHsieh, WFThe small-signal differential gain was calculated from the measured average cw and Kerr lens mode-locked (KLM) output powers over the least-misalignment-sensitive region of a completely soft-aperturing, self-starting KLM Ti:sapphire laser. The results indicate that the self-starting condition is reached with this laser operating near the center of the stable range. The higher-plant vacuole contains two types of proton-translocating pumps, H+-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.3) and H+-pyrophosphatase (EC 3.6.1.1), residing on the same membrane. These two enzymes generate roughly equal proton gradients across the vacuolar membrane for the secondary transport of ions and metabolites. However, the pumps respond differentially to stress in order to maintain critical functions of the vacuole. In this work, tonoplasts from etiolated mung bean seedlings ( Vigna radiata L.) were used to investigate the function of these two enzymes under high osmotic pressure. At high concentrations of sucrose or sorbitol, the light scattering and volume of isolated vesicles were progressively changed. Concomitantly, enzymatic activities, proton translocation, and coupling efficiencies of these two proton-pumping enzymes were inhibited to various extents under high osmotic pressure. No significant change in enzymatic activities of purified vacuolar H+-PPase and H+-ATPase under similar conditions was observed. We thus believe that the membrane structure is an important determinant for proper function of proton pumping systems of plant vacuoles. Furthermore, kinetic analysis shows different variation in apparent V-max but not in K-M values of vacuolar H+-PPase and H+-ATPase at high osmolarity of sucrose and sorbitol, respectively, suggesting probable alterations in substrate hydrolysis reactions but not substrate-binding affinity of the enzymes. A working model is proposed to interpret supplemental roles of vacuolar H+-PPase and H+-ATPase to maintain appropriate functions of plant tonoplasts.Item type:Item, Effects of age and gender on remote pointing performance and their design implications(1999-03-20) ;Hsu, SH ;Huang, CC ;Tsuang, YH ;Sun, JS工業工程與管理學系The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of age and sex on remote pointing movements. In addition, an attempt was made to incorporate possible age-related or sex differences into the design of a remote pointing user interface. The subjects were recruited from three age groups (elderly, middle-aged, and young) with equal number of both sexes. The participants were required to perform cursor positioning tasks using a remote pointing device. Their static hand stability and remote positioning time were recorded and analyzed. The remote positioning time was further separated into two components: initial submovement duration and adjustment submovement duration. The results reveal that age-related effects reduced the subjects' ability to perform remote pointing tasks and also maintained hand stability. However, sex differences had no significant effect on either performance. Moreover, the results also reveal that remote positioning movements for the young group were mostly completed in their initial submovement phase, while the elderly subjects spent most of their movement time on the fine adjustment phase. In light of the fact that different age groups exhibit different kinds of movement behavior patterns, suggestions for the design of signal sensitivity, target features, and display/control gain in remote pointing user interface were outlined.Item type:Item, Effects of geometric form features on three-dimensional object categorization(2005-06-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Chang, WF ;Chuang, MC ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementThe purpose was to investigate the effects of 3-D form features on the object-categorization process. 30 subjects [17 male and 13 female undergraduate industrial design students whose mean age was 20.7 yr. (SD= 1.5)] were asked to classify 32 3-D prismatic images according to their similarity. Multidimensional scaling and cluster analyses indicated that the classification process was strongly related to the prisms' compounded features. The attention-weighting of each individual form feature was calculated by regression analysis which further indicated that each feature had a different effect on the categorizing process.Item type:Item, Modal analysis of rib antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides by mode matching method(2005) ;Yang, CE ;Hsu, SH ;Huang, YT ;Kwei, CM電子工程學系及電子研究所In this presentation, a simple patchwork to the classical mode matching method (MMM) is proposed to analyze rib ARROWs. MMM gives the modal effective index and the lateral part of modal power loss, and the total modal loss is obtained by including the vertical part which is estimated by a simple yet physical method described here. The simplified MMM (SMMM) is also presented to analyze the effect of TE-TM couplings. Simulation results of selected rib ARROW structures are discussed and compared with those obtained by the Effective Index Method (EIM).
