Item type:Item, Numerical Investigation of the Thermal Management Performance of MEPCM Modules for PV Applications(2013-08-01) ;Tanuwijava, Abednego Oscar ;Ho, Ching Jenq ;Lai, Chi-Ming ;Huang, Chao-Yang機械工程學系The efficiency of photovoltaic modules decreases as the cell temperature increases. It is necessary to have an adequate thermal management mechanism for a photovoltaic module, especially when combined with a building construction system. This study aims to investigate via computational fluid dynamics simulations the heat transfer characteristics and thermal management performance of microencapsulated phase change material modules for photovoltaic applications under temporal variations of daily solar irradiation. The results show that the aspect ratio of the microencapsulated phase change material layer has significant effects on the heat transfer characteristics and the overall thermal performance of the two cases examined with different melting points (26 degrees C and 34 degrees C) are approximately the same.Item type:Item, Optimization and practical verification of system configuration parameter design for a photovoltaic thermal system combined with a reflector(2017-04-01) ;Kuo, Chung-Feng Jeffrey ;Syu, Sheng-Siang ;Shih, Chung-Yang ;Lan, Wei-LunHuang, Chao-YangThis study designed and optimized the system parameters for a photovoltaic thermal system (PV/thermal system) combined with reflectors. Moreover, it discussed the gain of electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency on the system after adding two reflectors on each of the south and north sides, and adjusting the water circulation system. As the rising angle and position of the sun varies each season, in order to make this study more rigorous, experiments were conducted in four seasons of a year. The Taguchi orthogonal array was used for experimental planning, and the optimal parameters were analyzed for electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency. The analysis of variance was conducted to examine the influential parameters, and principal component analysis was used to calculate the principal component point of each experiment. The results were employed to construct a response surface methodology model. Finally, the steepest descent method was applied to obtain the optimal parameters. The reflector theory was applied to calculate the gain of solar radiation amount after installing the reflector. Moreover, the gain was inputted into the simulation software TRNSYS to simulate the electrical power output and the water temperature in the water storage tank. The confirmatory experiments of the four seasons found that the electrical energy after installing the reflector increased by 0.117-0.183 kWh, and the thermal energy increased by 1.7-2.6 . The experiment confirmed that the prediction error was < 4 %.Item type:Item, Performance assessment of a BIPV integrated with a layer of water-saturated MEPCM(2013-12-01) ;Ho, C. J. ;Jou, Bor-Tyng ;Lai, Chi-Ming ;Huang, Chao-Yang機械工程學系The use of a water-saturated microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) layer as a passive thermal management medium for a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) was modeled by CFD numerical simulation to explore the effects of different MEPCM melting points and MEPCM layer thicknesses on the thermal and electrical performance. The well-designed BIPV can hopefully remain at a relatively low temperature during peak sunshine hours due to the absorption of latent heat during the phase change of the MEPCM layer, which reduces the decrease in electric generation efficiency caused by the increase in temperature due to solar radiation, thereby enhancing the electric generation efficiency. The results showed that a BIPV integrated with a MEPCM layer produced a significant improvement in the thermal and electrical performance compared to an untreated PV module. Under local summer climatic conditions, a melting point of 30 C and a 3-cm-thick MEPCM (using paraffin as the core material) layer are recommended for the thermal management medium. In this study, silicone resin was designed to have a low molecular weight and a highly nonpolar chemical structure. The silicone resin was applied to silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives. The molecular structure of silicone resin was characterized by FT-IR, GPC, H-1-NMR, and Si-29-NMR spectroscopic techniques. Properties such as thermal stability, solubility, hydrophobic, and transparent properties were researched and compared. When the chlorotrimethylsilane increased, it appeared that the amount of silanol groups, molecular weight and thermal stability decreased, while the hydrophobic and transparent properties increased. The silicone resin was completely soluble in toluene and xylene. It was also applied to silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives, resulting in good peel adhesion. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The control parameters for PV/T design including the collector plate material, collector azimuth, number of collector tubes, mass flow rate, collector angle, and storage tank volume to area (V/A) ratio are crucial factors affecting the performance of the PV/T. First, Taguchi method coupled with main effect analysis (MEA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to obtain the best parameters combination on each single quality characteristic of electricity and thermal efficiency. In order to achieve the maximum total efficiency of the PV/T system, multi-quality analysis AHP was used to obtain the optimal control parameters combination according to the contribution degrees of quality weight. Then, the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software used to simulate the PV/T module thermal distribution before and after optimization. The optimization control parameters combination are: collector plate material is copper, collector azimuth is due south, number of collector tubes is 12, mass flow rate is 0.01 kg/s-m(2), collector angle is 25 degrees, and V/A ratio is 123. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by the confirmation experiments. The optimization properties under these parameters are electrical efficiency 14.29% and thermal efficiency 44.96% which is improved than traditional PV/T system (electrical efficiency 12.74% and thermal efficiency 34.06%). The findings of CFD showed that the temperature of the PV/T module decreased by about 10 degrees C after optimality analysis, and the coefficient of correlation between the simulated and actual PV/T water temperatures was 0.991 (very close to 1). The CFD simulated performance testing proposed in this study has a good verification effect.
