Item type:Item, Determinants of the valuation of intangible assets - a contrast between Taiwanese and American IC design houses(2008) ;Chu, Po-Young ;Hsiung, Hsing-Hwa ;Huang, Chi-Hung ;Yang, Chuan-Yi管理科學系The industry of IC design is asset-light but knowledge intensive and high value added. We undertook research to understand how US and Taiwan IC design houses evaluate their intangible assets, and what factors drive the value. The results show that the values of US IC design houses are higher than those of Taiwan by market capital methods. By contrast, the values of Taiwanese IC design houses are more consistent those of US firms using asset return methods. We then constructed 26 items from financial and intellectual capital aspects, and ran a factor analysis that returned eight main attributes of intangible value. Results of stepwise regression indicated that current profitability is the most important predictor of intangible value for Taiwan companies, whereas R&D productivity is the most important driver for US firms. These findings suggest that US design houses are more long-term focused in their operations than their Taiwanese counterparts.Item type:Item, Externality evaluation: an empirical study of ITRI(2009) ;Chu, Po-Young ;Lin, Yu-Ling ;Huang, Chi-Hung ;Liu, Tzu-Yar管理科學系This study proposes a framework for exploring technology transfer externality of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a national industry technology development research institution in Taiwan over the past three decades. The specific diffusion effects and external impact were quantitatively assessed. High multiplier effects derived from ITRI's spin-off activities are concluded profound. Finally, being a non-profit R&D institution inherited with common properties of public goods, ITRI has created a unique and valuable role to foster Taiwan's high-tech sector. The innovative ITRI model should provide important managerial implications for large R&D institutes as well as emergent countries to initiate and operate projects with unavoidable high risk but desirable enormous externalities.Item type:Item, Study of chemical supply system of high-tech process using inherently safer design strategies in Taiwan(2014-05-01) ;Chen, Chun-Yu ;Chang, Kuo-Chi ;Huang, Chi-Hung ;Lu, Chih-Cheng工學院The photoelectric, semiconductor and other high-tech industries are Taiwan\'s most important economic activities. High-tech plant incidents are caused by hazardous energy, even when that energy is confined to the inside of the process machine. During daily maintenance procedures, overhauling or troubleshooting, engineers entering the interior of the machines are in direct contact with the source of the energy or hazardous substances, which can cause serious injury. The best method for preventing such incidents is to use inherently safer design strategies (ISDs); this approach can fully eliminate the dangers from the sources of hazardous energy at a facility. This study first conducts a lithography process hazard analysis and compiles a statistical analysis of the causes of the fires and losses at high-tech plants in Taiwan since 1996, the aim being to establish the necessary improvement measures by using the Fire Dynamics Simulation (FDS) to solve relevant problems. The researchers also investigate the lithography process machine in order to explore carriage improvement measures, and analyse the fires\' causes and reactive materials hazardous properties, from 1996 to 2012. The effective improvement measures are established based on the accident statistics. The study site is a 300 mm wafer fabrication plant located in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan. After the completion of the annual maintenance jobs improvement from September 2011 to December 2012, the number of lithography process accidents was reduced from 6 to 1. The accident rate was significantly reduced and there were no staff time losses for a continuous 6882 h. It is confirmed that the plant safety level has been effectively enhanced. The researchers offer safety design recommendations regarding transport process appliances, chemical storage tanks, fume cupboard devices, chemical rooms, pumping equipment, transportation pipelines, valve manual box (VMB) process machines and liquid waste discharge lines. These recommendations can be applied in these industries to enhance the safety level of high-tech plants, facilities or process systems. (c) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. However, because 1 has relatively low hydrophilicity, it was evaluated only via ip administration, which is not clinically acceptable. In this study, we synthesized the monosodium phosphate salt (CHM-1-P-Na, 4) of 1 as a hydrophilic prodrug. Compound 4 was rapidly converted into 1 following iv and po administration and also possessed excellent antitumor activity in a SKOV-3 xenograft nude mice model. Compound 4 also had clear-cut pharmacological effects oil enzymes related with tumor cells. Neither 4 not 1 significantly affected normal biological function in a safety pharmacology profiling study. Compound 1 caused apoptotic effects in breast carcinoma cells via accumulation of cyclin B1, and importantly, the endogenous levels of the mitotic spindle checkpoint proteins BubR1 directly correlated with cellular response to microtubule disruption. With excellent antitumor activity profiles, 4 is highly promising for development as all anticancer clinical trials candidate.
