Item type:Item, 4G Mobile Phone Consumer Preference Predictions by Using the Rough Set Theory and Flow Graphs(2010) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Yang, Ya-Lan ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Cheng, Shih-TsungLee, Hong-YuhAt the moment, when mobile phone users are demanding more handset features as well as broader bandwidth, the fourth generation (4G) wireless telecommunication standard is emerging. However, how to define appropriate handset features toward various market segmentations to fulfill customers\' needs and minimize the manufacturing cost has become one of the most important issues for the 4G handset manufacturers. Thus, a rule based consumer behavior forecast mechanism will be very helpful for marketers and designers of the handset manufacturers to understand and realize. Moreover, precise prediction rules for consumer behavior being derived by the forecast mechanism can be very useful for marketers and designers to define the features of the next generation handsets. Therefore, this research intends to define a Rough Set Theory (RST) based forecast mechanism for the 4G handset feature definitions. Possible handset features will first be summarized by literature reviews. After that, rules of consumers\' preferences toward the 4G handsets will be summarized by the RST. To analyze the data and uncover the knowledge inside the rules further, the flow graph will further be introduced for analyzing the information flow distribution. An empirical study on Taiwanese mobile phone users will be leveraged for verifying the feasibility and demonstrate the usability of the proposed forecast mechanism. Meanwhile, the proposed consumer behavior forecast mechanism can be leveraged on defining features of other high technology products/services.Item type:Item, A Hybrid MADM Based Competence Set Expansion for Marketing Imagination Capabilities(2010) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Hor, Shu ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyCreativity and marketing imagination capabilities are the most important factors for achieving marketing success and thus, firms\' profitability. However, a lot of marketing programs of new products are in lack of creativity. Further, albeit scholars found decision support systems to be useful for enhancing creativity, few past researches tried to uncover this issue in detail. To resolve the above mentioned problems and propose a decision making framework to derive the factors which affect the creativity of marketing programs, relationships between the factors and finally, define appropriate strategies to maximize the performance of marketing imagination, a hybrid multiple attribute decision making (MADM) method based decision support system by introducing the (creativity) competence set expansion concept will be proposed. A case study for expanding the creativity and thus, marketing imagination capabilities of a system vendor of telematic products was provided to demonstrate the feasibility of this MADM framework.Item type:Item, A Novel Hybrid MADM Based Competence Set Expansions of a SOC Design Service Firm(2009) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Lue, Yeou-Feng ;Chuang, Hsiu-Tyan科技管理研究所As the IC (integrated circuit) industry migrates to the System-on-Chip (SOC) era, a novel business model, the SOC design service (DS), is emerging. However, how to expand a firm\'s innovation competences while satisfying multiple objectives including highest quality, lowest cost, and fastest time to market as well as most revenues for economics of scale are always problems for a design service firm. Therefore, attempts to expand the innovation competences, and thus the competitiveness, of latecomers in the SOC DS industry have already become the most critical issue facing the top managers of SOC design service firms. In this paper, a novel multiple attribute decision making (MADM) analytic framework based on the concept of competence set expansion, as well as MADM methods consisting with DEMATEL, ANP and multiple objective decision making (MODM) will be proposed in order to define a path for expanding a late-coining SOC DS firm\'s innovation capabilities. An empirical study on expanding innovation competence sets, of a late-coming Taiwanese DS firm then will be presented.Item type:Item, A Novel Massive Deployment Solution Based on the Peer-to-Peer Protocol(2019-01-02) ;Shiau, Steven J. H. ;Huang, Yu-Chiang ;Yen, Ching-Hsuan ;Tsai, Yu-ChinSun, Chen-KaiThe BitTorrent (BT) is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol that was developed approximately 20 years ago, is becoming increasingly popular, and has been widely accepted. The BT-based mass deployment system can be used to improve performance and scalability that cannot be achieved by the unicasting, broadcasting, and multicasting protocols. However, when the BT-based system is applied in massive deployments, a major issue related to insufficient temporary storage space to store the whole system image before deploying needs to be resolved. Such problems arose because the system is deployed to the disk space, meaning that it cannot be used for temporary storage. Therefore, a novel BT-based solution that can remove the limitations caused by the insufficient temporary storage issue is proposed. The BT-based mass deployment system was designed by using the file system blocks transferring (FSBT) mechanism. The receiver of the FSBT mechanism can obtain the blocks of the file system from other peers. Then, those blocks will be written directly to raw disks or partitions. The sender of the FSBT mechanism can read the blocks of file systems directly from raw disks or partitions. Then, the blocks can be sent to other peers. This approach solves the insufficient temporary storage issue. The novel BT-based mass deployment system was tested and verified for the configuration consisting of at most 32 personal computers (PCs). To demonstrate the achievable performance of the novel BT-based system, comparisons were made between the novel program and the traditional multicast solutions, as well as other solutions for mass deployment. The proposed BT solution can be much faster than the multicast solution when deploying 11 machines or more. The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility and superior performance of the proposed system. Furthermore, performance comparisons of the proposed BT-based mass deployment system versus other solutions demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed solution. In the future, the BT parameters can be further optimized, and the simultaneous read and write features can be implemented to improve the deployment performance. In addition, the BT-based mass deployment system can serve as the basis for the development of other mass deployment systems.Item type:Item, A Novel Method for Fuzzy Measure Identification(2011-03-01) ;Larbani, Moussa ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityFuzzy measure and Choquet integral are effective tools for handling complex multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problems in which criteria are inter-dependent. The identification of a fuzzy measure requires the determination of 2(n) - 2 values when the number of criteria is n. The complexity of this problem increases exponentially, which makes it practically very difficult to solve. Many methods have been proposed to reduce the number of values to be determined including the introduction of new special fuzzy measures like the lambda -fuzzy measures. However, manipulations of the proposed methods are difficult from the aspects of high data complexity as well as low computation efficiency. Thus, this paper proposed a novel fuzzy measure identification method by reducing the data complexity to n(n - 1)/2 and enhancing the computation efficiency by leveraging a relatively small number of variables and constraints for linear programming. The proposed method was developed based on the evaluation of pair-wise additivity degrees or interdependence coefficients between the criteria. Depending on the information being provided by decision-makers on the individual density of each criterion, the fuzzy measure can be constructed by solving a simple system of linear inequalities or a linear programming problem. This novel method is validated through a supplier selection problem which occurs frequently in real-world decision-making problems. Validation results demonstrate that the newly-proposed method can model real-world MCDM problems successfully.Item type:Item, An Emotional Designed Based Hybrid MCDM Framework for the Next Generation Embedded System Configurations(2010) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Lin, Hsiang-Chun ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyEmotions play a critical role in human\'s ability to understanding and learning about the world and new things. Furthermore, the concept of user-centered system design (UCSD), which emphasizes the importance of having a good understanding of the users, is emerging as a core of modern design methods. Traditionally, new product development team defined high technology products in general and embedded systems in special, based on their intuition. However, this kind of design methodology can be subjective and misleading. Users\' emotions and requirements were not really considered. Thus, this paper aims to resolve this issue by introducing a hybrid fuzzy multiple criteria decision making (FMCDM) based design methodology consisting of Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM), Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchical Process (FAHP) and Fuzzy Integral by introducing the concept of emotional design. Thirteen senior managers from world\'s leading IT system companies as well as IC design houses were invited for configuring a FMCDM framework for the next generation handset designs and verified the feasibility. In the future, the proposed framework can be used to configure any embedded system to be embedded in consumer electronics products.Item type:Item, Combined DEMATEL technique with hybrid MCDM methods for creating the aspired intelligent global manufacturing & logistics systems(2012-08-01) ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of Technology"The concept of globalization has been prosperous in the past decades while manufacturing as well as logistics have already become one of the most significant issues in the globalization era. However, while modern globalized firms are leveraging both global manufacturing resources as well as logistics systems for pursuing higher quality, lower cost as well as product differentiation, how to evaluate, selecting an appropriate global manufacturing strategy by considering issues from both aspects of global manufacturing as well as logistics has become one of the most critical and difficult issues. Moreover, how the chosen intertwined global manufacturing as well as logistics system is to be optimized so that the aspired level of the global manufacturing system can be achieved have few been addressed. Thus, this research aims to resolve the above mentioned global manufacturing and logistics strategy selection as well as system reconfiguration issue. A Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique based novel multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) method with Analytic Network Process (ANP), Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) as well as VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) will be proposed for selecting and re-configuring the aspired global manufacturing and logistics system. An empirical study based on the global manufacturing and logistics system design of a semiconductor company will be provided for verifying the effectiveness of this proposed methodology."Item type:Item, Configuring an Embedded System by the Concepts of Emotional Design by Using a Non-additive Fuzzy Integral Based FMCDM Framework(2010) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Lin, Hsiang-Chun ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Lee, Hong-Yuh科技管理研究所An embedded system, a digital electronic system being embedded in a larger device, is the system to be configured to fulfill specific demands of customers from some market segmentations. This nature complicates the design of an embedded system itself. Traditional embedded system marketers usually defined the systems based on their intuition, which could be subjective and misleading. To fulfill different customers\' demands from various market segmentations, the concept of "user-centered design" can be leveraged. Thus, this research aims to resolve this issue by introducing a novel fuzzy multiple criteria decision making (FMCDM) based embedded system design method by introducing the concept of "emotional design". By using this method, customer needs can be elicited through explorations of their emotions. The fuzzy analytic hierarchical process (FAHP) will be leveraged for deriving the relative weights. Further, considering the characteristic of inter-dependences between criteria, the non-additive fuzzy integral method will be introduced to aggregate the performance scores on each component of the embedded system platform. In this paper, an empirical study on an embedded system design of a handset being designed by one of the world\'s largest IT (information technology) manufacturers will be leveraged for demonstrating the feasibility of this framework. A satisfying mobile phone can be designed based on the newly proposed FMCDM framework. And this methodology can be used to configure any embedded system to be embedded in other consumer electronics products.Item type:Item, Configuring the Knowledge Diffusion Policy Portfolio of Higher Education Institutes(2017-08-01) ;Chen, Jou-Chen ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThe research proposes an analytic framework to configure the policy portfolio for diffusing knowledge embedded in higher-education institutes. A modified Delphi method was first proposed to derive the key factors for enabling and enhancing the diffusion mechanism. The influence relationships between these factors were derived using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL). The analytic network process (ANP) derived weights associated with the key factors. Finally, the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) was used to derive the policy instruments based on the Grey Relationships between the key factors and the policy instruments. An empirical study based on Taiwanese higher-education institutes also/then verified the feasibility of the proposed analytic framework. These findings suggest that research and development activities, publications, and networks of academic exchange play primary roles in knowledge diffusion in higher-education institutions. Motivation, human resources, and investment are the most important policy instruments to use for improving knowledge diffusion in the higher-education system.Item type:Item, Derivations of Factors Influencing Segmental Consumer Behaviors Using the RST Combined with Flow Graph and FCA(2010) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Yang, Ya-Lan ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Yu, Hsiao-ChengLee, Hong-YuhConsumer behavior analysis and prediction are both important for marketers in general and high technology marketers in special. At the moment of fast evolutions of high technology products, precise predictions of consumer behaviors can serve as the foundation of product/specification definitions. Traditionally, qualitative approaches (e.g. brain storming) or multivariate statistical (e.g. principal component analysis, factor analysis, etc.) were applied widely on consumer behavior analysis. However, the qualitative methods can be objective while the statistical approaches could be hard to be manipulated. Thus, a rule-based prediction method can be very helpful for analyzing and predicting consumer behavior. Moreover, precise prediction rules for consumer behavior being derived by the forecast mechanism can be very useful for marketers and designers to define the features of the products. Therefore, this research intends to define a Cluster Analysis (CA), Rough Set Theory (RST), flow graph (FG) and formal concept analysis (FCA) based forecast mechanism for predicting segmental consumer behavior. An empirical study on 124 Taiwanese 4G handset users was leveraged for verifying the feasibility of the proposed forecast mechanism. The empirical study results demonstrate the feasibility of this proposed framework. Meanwhile, the proposed consumer behavior forecast mechanism can be leveraged on defining features of other high technology products/services.Item type:Item, Derivations of Factors Influencing the Technology Acceptance of Smart TV by Using the DEMATEL Based Network Process(2012) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Liu, Yu-Wei ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyInformation technology (IT) products have played significant roles from both aspects of market development as well as technology growth. However, predicting technology acceptance toward the IT products is always challenging for marketers and designers. Also, the characteristics of and strategies for IT products at different stages of product life cycle are different. Therefore, the customers\' preference and needs change rapidly at different stages in product life cycle. However, very few scholars tried to explore how the technology can be accepted at various stages of a product life cycle was seldom discussed. But the issue is very important. Thus, this research aims to propose DEMATEL based Network Process for discovering the influential factors of the technology acceptance for introduction stage IT product. An empirical study based on the Smart TV for introduction stage will be used to verify the feasibility of this framework. Further, the Lead User Method will be applied to predict the preference and the purchase behavior of mass user and the result could be a reference for industrial marketing activities and design process.Item type:Item, Evaluating Cloud Computing Based Telecommunications Service Quality Enhancement by Using a New Hybrid MCDM Model(2012) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Hsu, Pei-Chu ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThe fast emergence of the cloud based computation fulfills modern telecommunication serve firms\' requirements for massive computation and storage space with very low costs. However, how the cloud-based service quality can be enhanced, how customers\' needs can be fulfilled, and how firms\' profits can be maximized were seldom discussed. Thus, this research aims to provide a new hybrid MCDM model combining DEMATEL and ANP based framework and Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) for improving to close the service quality gap, fulfill customers\' satisfactory and maximize profits in interdependence and feedback problems among dimensions/criteria. An empirical case study bases on enhancing the service quality of a Taiwanese mobile telecommunication firm\'s application of cloud computation as the billing system. In results of this case study, the expertise in dynamic capacity management and new education and training should be the most important strategies for service quality enhancement to be introduced.Item type:Item, Evaluating Top Services-Prepackaged Software Firms in Standard and Poor\'s 500 Index by Using a Multiple Objective Programming Based Data Envelopment Analysis(2012) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Wang, Po-Yen ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyServices-prepackaged software firms are a field of Information technology (IT). IT is defined as the obtainment, procedure, storage and propagation of sounding, drawing, and textual information by combining microelectronics-based computing and telecommunications. Nowadays, IT has penetrated in daily life of human beings and become one part of the whole society. The importance of IT has become momentous. Therefore, to understand the performance of efficiency and productivity of the IT firms is critical for managers as well as for personal investors. Until now, there are very few researches tried to analyze final performance of the services-prepackaged software firms in IT sector. As a result, this research intends to use traditional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) CCR or BCC models to evaluate the performance of the services-prepackaged software firms. However, the traditional DEA models are not fair models from the aspect of improper weight derivations. Thus, this paper intends to analyze the efficiency of the services-prepackaged software firms by using multiple objective programming (MOP) based DEA. The Decision Making Units (DMUs) on this research are chosen from the services-prepackaged software firms in S&P 500 based on publicly available financial reports of the fiscal year 2010. In a MOP based DEA approach, DMUs will be evaluated based on an equal standard and the results will be evaluated more fairly. In the empirical study, the MOP based DEA demonstrated that Autodesk Inc., BMC Software, and Citrix Systems should be the services-prepackaged software firms worthwhile to be invested. In the future, performance evaluation results can be served as foundations for investment strategies definition.Item type:Item, Evaluation and Selection of Materials for Particulate Matter MEMS Sensors by Using Hybrid MCDM Methods(2018-10-01) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Chung, Pei-Han ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;Ho, Yao-HuaWu, Chao-HsinAir pollution poses serious problems as global industrialization continues to thrive. Since air pollution has grave impacts on human health, industry experts are starting to fathom how to integrate particulate matter (PM) sensors into portable devices; however, traditional micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) gas sensors are too large. To overcome this challenge, experts from industry and academia have recently begun to investigate replacing the traditional etching techniques used on MEMS with semiconductor-based manufacturing processes and materials, such as gallium nitride (GaN), gallium arsenide (GaAs), and silicon. However, studies showing how to systematically evaluate and select suitable materials are rare in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to propose an analytic framework based on multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) to evaluate and select the most suitable materials for fabricating PM sensors. An empirical study based on recent research was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of our analytic framework. The results provide an invaluable future reference for research institutes and providers.Item type:Item, High Technology Service Value Maximization through an MCDM-Based Innovative e-Business Model(2009) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Ho, Wen-Rong ;Chuang, Hsiu-TyanLue, Yeou-FengThe emergence of the Internet has changed the high technology marketing channels thoroughly in the past decade while E-commerce has already become one of the most efficient channels which high technology firms may skip the intermediaries and reach end customers directly. However, defining appropriate e-business models for commercializing new high technology products or services through Internet are not that easy. To overcome the above mentioned problems, a novel analytic framework based oil the concept of high technology Customers\' competence set expansion by leveraging high technology service firms\' capabilities and resources as well as novel multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques, will be proposed in order to define an appropriate e-business model. An empirical example study of a silicon intellectual property (SIP) commercialization e-business model based on MCDM techniques will be provided for verifying the effectiveness of this novel analytic framework. The analysis successful assisted a Taiwanese IC design service firm to define an e-business model for maximizing its Customer\'s SIP transactions. In the future, the novel MCDM framework can be applied successful to novel business model definitions in the high technology industry.Item type:Item, Key Determinant Derivations for Information Technology Disaster Recovery Site Selection by the Multi-Criterion Decision Making Method(2015-05-01) ;Yang, Chia-Lee ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyDisaster recovery sites are an important mechanism in continuous IT system operations. Such mechanisms can sustain IT availability and reduce business losses during natural or human-made disasters. Concerning the cost and risk aspects, the IT disaster-recovery site selection problems are multi-criterion decision making (MCDM) problems in nature. For such problems, the decision aspects include the availability of the service, recovery time requirements, service performance, and more. The importance and complexities of IT disaster recovery sites increases with advances in IT and the categories of possible disasters. The modern IT disaster recovery site selection process requires further investigation. However, very few researchers tried to study related issues during past years based on the authors' extremely limited knowledge. Thus, this paper aims to derive the aspects and criteria for evaluating and selecting a modern IT disaster recovery site. A hybrid MCDM framework consisting of the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and the Analytic Network Process (ANP) will be proposed to construct the complex influence relations between aspects as well as criteria and further, derive weight associated with each aspect and criteria. The criteria with higher weight can be used for evaluating and selecting the most suitable IT disaster recovery sites. In the future, the proposed analytic framework can be used for evaluating and selecting a disaster recovery site for data centers by public institutes or private firms.Item type:Item, Multiple generation product life cycle predictions using a novel two-stage fuzzy piecewise regression analysis method(2008-01-01) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyProduct life cycle (PLC) prediction plays a crucial role in strategic planning and policy definition for high-technology products. Forecast methodologies which can predict PLCs accurately can help to achieve successful strategic decision-making, forecasting, and foresight activities in high-technology firms, research institutes, governments, and universities. Over the past few decades, even though analytic framework strategies have been proposed for production, marketing, R&D (research and development), and finance, aiming at each stage of PLCs, forecast methodologies with which to predict PLCs are few. The purpose of this research is to develop a novel forecast methodology to allow for predictions of product life time (PLT) and the annual shipment of products during the entire PLC of multiple generation products. A novel two-stage fuzzy piecewise regression analysis method is proposed in this paper. In the first stage, the product life-time of the specific generation to be analyzed will be predicted by the fuzzy piecewise regression line that is derived based upon the product life-time of earlier generations. In the second stage of the forecast methodology, the annual shipment of products of the specified generation will be predicted by deriving annual fuzzy regression lines for each generation, based upon the historical data on the earlier generations' products. An empirical study predicting the life-time and the annual shipment of the 16 Mb (Mega bit) DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) PLC is illustrated to validate the analytical process. The results demonstrate that two-stake fuzzy piecewise regression analysis can predict multiple generation PLT and PLC precisely, thereby serving as a foundation for future strategic planning, policy definitions and foresights. Although SIP is very important for IC industry development, complicated business, technical as well as legal issues inside SIP transactions have hindered successful transactions and the integration of SIPS into SOCs. Thus, web-based SIP e-Commerce mechanisms, called SIP Malls, have emerged, aiming to resolve complex SIP issues. To maintain its leading position and competitiveness in the World's IC industry, as well as the value added by SOC products in Taiwanese IC firms, the Taiwanese government has developed SIP Malls, using innovation policy tools. However, the Taiwanese SIP Mall industry remains immature. No existing Taiwanese SIP Malls generate a profit or account for a significant share of worldwide SIP transactions. This research will develop an analytical framework for defining an innovation policy portfolio that aims to develop Taiwan's SIP Mall industry, so that it will enhance the value added of SIP Malls and, thus, the nation's competitiveness in the SIP and IC industries, something which already has become one of the Taiwanese government's major concerns. The industry innovation requirements (IIRs) are summarized using the Delphi method. Meanwhile, the major IIRs identified by Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) are introduced. After the IIRs are derived, the relationships between the IIRs and innovation policy tools are derived by Grey relational analysis (GRA). Then, the innovation policy tools are clustered, based upon the Grey grades derived by GRA. Finally, reconfigured innovation policy portfolios are presented for the Taiwanese government's policy definition. The results demonstrate that developing an innovative policy portfolio that includes scientific, technical, educational, public enterprise, information, legal and regulatory, financial, and taxation policy tools will be the most necessary step towards developing Taiwan's SIP Mall industry. Thus, appropriate semiconductor foundry strategies are critical for the fables IC design firms\' profitability. Further, due to the various characteristics of the semiconductor wafer foundry industry versus each stage of a technology life cycle (TLC), the foundry strategies of the fabless IC design firms should further be defined based on the characteristics of each stage of a TLC. Albeit important, very few past researches tried to illustrate the foundry strategies of fabless IC design firms, not to mention the considerations about foundry strategy portfolios definition versus the concept of TLC. Thus, this research aims to develop a fuzzy integral based fuzzy multiple criteria decision making (FMCDM) framework for defining foundry strategies versus each stage of a TLC by using the interpretive structure modeling (ISM), fuzzy analytic hierarchical process (FAHP) and the non-additive fuzzy integral method. By inviting twenty one industry experts from leading semiconductor foundries, fabless IC design firms as well as IC design service companies, strategy portfolios versus each stage of a TLC were developed.Item type:Item, SEMICONDUCTOR MARKET FLUCTUATION INDICATORS AND RULE DERIVATIONS USING THE ROUGH SET THEORY(2009-06-01) ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;Tzeng, Gwo-Hshiung ;Chan, Chien-Chung ;Wu, Hong-Chun科技管理研究所Semiconductors are the most important components in most electronic systems. The semiconductor market exhibits highly cyclical behavior, which has become one of the major impact factors for world economic performance. Meanwhile, the wealth of the leading countries in the semiconductor industry, e.g. South Korea and Taiwan, depends highly on the semiconductor market situation. Although important, very few studies have focused on deriving general indicators or rules for predicting semiconductor market fluctuations. Instead, existing research focuses mainly on discussing specific reasons for explaining one or a few past semiconductor industry business cycle(s). Such rules of thumb, which are intended to serve as foundations for policy definitions, strategic planning and investment decisions, are complex and cannot be easily followed to predict future semiconductor market fluctuations. On the other hand, a rule-based forecasting (RBF) framework will be very helpful for real world managers' and policy makers' applications. Thus, the purpose of this research is to derive a set of general rules for predicting future semiconductor market fluctuations. Based on historical data, a set of basic indicators serving as inputs for algorithms developed based on the rough set theory (RST) will first be summarized using the brainstorming approach followed by semiconductor industry experts. Then the fluctuations of the basic indicators from 1978 to 2004 will be transformed into seven levels of linguistic variables from high growth (HG) to high recession (HR). After the transformation of growth rates into linguistic variables, a set of general rules for predicting future semiconductor market industry fluctuations will be derived using RST. Finally, general rules and a set of indicators are presented for government policy definition, industry strategic planning, investment analysis and so on. As a result, 18 indicators and 12 rules are derived. The results demonstrate that when the semiconductor capital spending grows strongly or the European Union (EU) Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grows strongly when the crude oil price remains unchanged, the semiconductor market will grow strongly. Meanwhile, when the electronic system production. declines severely, the semiconductor market will also be in a severe recession. By applying the decision rules derived using RST on 2005 semiconductor market fluctuations, we found the proposed RBF framework feasible and can predict the 2005 semiconductor market fluctuation precisely.
