Item type:Item, Electrochemical Photocatalytic Degradation of Orange G Using TiO2 Films Prepared by Cathodic Deposition(2014-01-01) ;Wu, Tsai-Fang ;Lin, Wei-Chieh ;Hsiao, Yu-Cheng ;Su, Chih-HaoHu, Chi-ChangHerein, we report that organic dyes with poor adsorption on photocatalysts (e. g., OG (orange G) on TiO2) can only be significantly degraded via the indirect oxidation process by the electrochemical photocatalytic (EPC) or photo-electro-Fenton (PEF) mechanisms because of their enhanced electron-hole separation for generating H2O2. The TiO2/Ti photo-anodes were prepared by cathodic deposition from a bath containing TiCl3, HCl, H2O2, and NaNO3 under a two-electrode mode for EPC dye degradation. Effects of the deposition cell voltage, deposition time, and annealing temperature on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 films, evaluated by the photocurrent density, are systematically investigated. The surface morphologies and crystalline structure of various TiO2 films were studied using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The EPC characteristics of TiO2/Ti photo-anodes combined with a graphite cathode toward the OG degradation have also been evaluated. The maximal photocatalytic activity is obtained for the TiO2/Ti photo-anode deposited at a cell voltage of 2.6 V for 20 min and annealed at 700 degrees C in air for 1 hr, which exhibits a photocurrent density of 22.86 mu Amg(-1). The order of degradation modes with respect to decreasing the degradation efficiency of OG is: PEF > EPC > PC (photocatalytic) > EC (electrocatalytic) oxidation. (C) 2014 The Electrochemical Society. A new hybrid system of photocatalytic oxidation and non-woven membrane separation was studied for treating secondary effluent. Initially, the foulant properties, such as polysaccharide, protein, and biopolymer, etc., were examined in a batch test. The experimental results revealed that foulants in secondary effluent could be photodegraded. Then, a continuous experiment with this new hybrid system, three applied fluxes of 16.6, 33.3, and 50.0 L/m(2) A (LMH), was applied to investigate the photodegradation ability and the filtration behavior. The results revealed that the concentration of foulants in permeate increased with increasing applied flux, due to the reduction of hydraulic retention time (HRT). In comparison with the system using microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) membrane, larger specific flux was obtained in our non-woven membrane system. In addition, a batch-stirred cell test using UF membrane was performed to compare filtration performance before and after photodegradation in secondary effluent. Such results proved that this new hybrid system was an effective treatment process for foulant removal in secondary effluent.Item type:Item, Grey forecasting model for CO(2) emissions: A Taiwan study(2011-11-01) ;Lin, Chiun-Sin ;Liou, Fen-May ;Huang, Chih-Pin ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceAmong the various greenhouse gases associated with climate change. CO(2) is the most frequently implicated in global warming. The latest data from Carbon Monitoring for Action (CARMA) shows that the coal-fired power plant in Taichung. Taiwan emitted 39.7 million tons of CO(2) in 2007 - the highest of any power plant in the world. Based on statistics from Energy International Administration, the annual CO(2) emissions in Taiwan have increased 42% from 1997 until 2006. Taiwan has limited natural resources and relies heavily on imports to meet its energy needs, and the government must take serious measures control energy consumption to reduce CO(2) emissions. Because the latest data was from 2009, this study applied the grey forecasting model to estimate future CO(2) emissions in Taiwan from 2010 until 2012. Forecasts of CO(2) emissions in this study show that the average residual error of the GM(1,1) was below 10%. Overall, the GM(1,1) predicted further increases in CO(2) emissions over the next 3 years. Although Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations and is not bound by the Kyoto Protocol, the findings of this study provide a valuable reference with which the Taiwanese government could formulate measures to reduce CO(2) emissions by curbing the unnecessary the consumption of energy. Three propositions are derived from the model: (1) firms emphasizing light assets over tangible assets, generate superior performance; (2) at a given level of synthetic normal returns, firms possessing more "light" assets have superior performance; and (3) to achieve a given book rate of return, firms with more light assets require fewer tangible assets as inputs. An empirical study of the global semiconductor industry significantly supports all three propositions. The results show that, the excess returns observed across an industry reflect heterogeneity in the "light assets" possessed by the firms, and provide an explanation for observed differences in performance.Item type:Item, Modeling Government Subsidies and Project Risk for Financially Non-Viable Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Projects(2012-03-01) ;Liou, Fen-May ;Huang, Chih-Pin ;Chen, Borliang ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceGovernments encourage private sector participation in building infrastructure through Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreements. Large projects may be financially non-viable despite their net economic benefits for the host society. Host governments might subsidize initial private investments to create financial feasibility. Small-scale subsidies might not sufficiently reduce project risks to attract private investment; however, large percentage subsidies might result in loose profit structures, discouraging the pursuit of efficiency. This article applies Monte Carlo techniques to data from the Taiwanese West Corridor High-Speed Rail Project to assess the subsidy-risk trade-off relationship. The results provide guidance for public-private negotiations.Item type:Item, Optimal Financing Mix of Financially Non-Viable Private-Participation Investment Project with Initial Subsidy(2012) ;Chen, Borliang ;Liou, Fen-May ;Huang, Chih-Pin ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityGovernments with limited fiscal budgets tend to encourage private sector participation in building economic and social infrastructure to meet the economic growth or social welfare through Private-participation (PPI) schemes. However, since large projects may be financially non-viable despite their net economic benefits for the society, host governments may choose to subsidize a portion of the initial cost to create financial feasibility for private participation so as to realize the expected net economic benefits. The private partners in a pure private-financed PPI scheme are expected to finance the original investment cost and recover it, with an acceptable return to compensate the project risk, from operating benefits under terms and conditions given in the concession agreement. The financial structure, that is, the financing mix between equity and debt, of the project determines the cost of capital and the value of the underlying project. An optimal financial structure minimizes the cost of capital and in turn, maximizes the project worth. Scientific problem - the government's role in PPI-led projects changes the traditional capital structure model in financial management, which includes only the financing mix of owners' equity and debt. It is necessary to develop a model into which the government's financial support is incorporated to identify the optimal financial structure of PPI projects. This paper develops a linear programming model based on discounted cash flow to determine the optimal financing mix of the project given governmental initial subsidy for non-financially viable PPI projects. The model takes a two-stage approach: first, a debt-free cash flow is developed to determine the government's initial subsidy; then, the optimal financing mix is determined based on the government's subsidy. We apply the proposed model to the Taiwan West Corridor High-Speed Railway project as an example. The results provide guidance for public-private negotiations. Scientific novelty - a linear programming model built on discounted cash flow is proposed to determine the optimal capital structure for non-financially viable PPI projects with government subsidy. The aim of this research - to develop a model into which the government's role in PPI projects is incorporated to determine the optimal capital structure. The results provide guidance to the public-private negotiations. The object of the research - non-financially viable PPI projects, taking Taiwan West Corridor High-Speed Railway Project as the example. The method of the research - a linear programming model built on discounted cash flow is used to find the optimal solution for multi-objective decisions.Item type:Item, Recovery of sulfuric acid from piranha solution over a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) Ti-RuO2 electrode and beyond(2019-08-25) ;Carretero, Daniel Sanchez ;Huang, Chih-Pin ;Huang, Chin-Pao ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityItem type:Item, Sweeping-rate-dependent photocurrent of GaAs Schottky diode with strain relaxed InAs quantum dots(2015-04-01) ;Wang, Jia-Feng ;Lin, Cheng-Lu ;Pan, Sheng-Shiang ;Huang, Chih-PinHsieh, Chao-ShengWe demonstrate that the photocurrent of a GaAs Schottky diode can be influenced by the carrier stored in strain relaxed InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in the Schottky diode. A potential drop is induced by the charged QDs, and the photocurrent generated from the Schottky diode can be suppressed by the induced potential drop. In this paper, the charging time of the relaxed InAs QDs is obtained from 0.1 to 10 s. So the variation in photocurrent can be detected, if the sweeping rate of applied bias is from 10 to 0.1V/s. Two kinds of QD samples, relaxed and non-relaxed InAs QDs, are compared, and we found that the photocurrent is obviously influenced in the relaxed InAs QD sample. A equivalent RC circuit modal also is provided to analyze the formula of the photocurrent, and the analysis agrees with the results of measurements. This study is advantageous for the investigation of QD memory devices. This study developed and applied an auto-imaging FlowCAM-based method for online observation and quantification of TEP in freshwater. Samples from reservoirs in Taiwan with a wide range of water quality were directly used to develop this methodology. Factors that potentially affect the measurement were tested. The results showed that characteristics of the particles measured instantaneously after staining samples with Alcian blue differed significantly from those measured at steady states, as a result of particle aggregation. Compared to traditional microscopic methods, this proposed method provides a simple, rapid, and less labor-intensive analysis with particle morphological conservation and a large number of particle attributes. By overcoming the limitations from the former, this technique would offer routine monitoring of these transparent particles from various freshwater sources and feed water in membrane filtration, hence facilitating the use of TEP as a critical parameter for biofouling investigation in water treatment. Application of the method for Taiwan reservoirs showed a wide variety of morphological forms of TEP and its abundance, up to 25,000 ppm.
